Good video. I've coached for a while and my favorite phrase for defense is "Play the man, not the ball". It's similar to your golden rule. Use this to position them towards the outside and not the center of the field. To that point, watch their hips more than the ball. You can let the ball past you but don't let them past you and you'll be between them and their ball. Also, as a defender, get physical. The player with their shoulder in front, closest to the ball, wins so don't be afraid to muscle for position. Also, no "stabbing" or over reaching in with your foot like the defender does at 2:41. Don't over-commit on a ball and allow their body to pass you. It's harder to get past someone than it is to stop them so a defender should have the advantage, but if you're reaching in you reduce your success rate to probably less than 50% and allow people to take uninterrupted shots on goals. Lastly, to the point of knowing a players preferred foot; We all have a dominate foot and we first learn to use the inside of our foot and this builds habits, especially when pressured. These habits stick around through high school soccer and even into college ball. For most players age 3-18, a right footer will try to go left. They may fake or juke a lot before they do it, but as they make their move it will be to their left and your right. Keep your weight balanced to be able to get your right foot out quickly to stop it.
actually, the defender had a perfect opportunity to end it right there at 2:38 while the attacker was balancing on the left foot and doing bs with his right one. All that the defender had to do at that moment was to read the flow, lean on his right foot and propel his left one towards the ball pushing it behind the attacker. Instead he hesitated to take that opportunity and eventually backed off a bit giving the attacker more space to move and make a play. A defender who can dance is superior to an attacker who can dribble. For dancing teaches you way more extreme, sharper moves and balance shifts than any dribble ever will, I would know 'cause I do both football and streetdance, and I'm yet to meet an attacker who can dribble his way thru me. \o/

I'm probably very late to the party, I just discovered Will John and his beautiful defending videos. Will John's basic teaching is perfect and I will try everything I learned from Mr John in mg play.
Very well put. I honestly love the art of defending and these things are so important. Diving in is for idiots. You always do your best to stay on your feet. So many people forget that you play football with your BRAIN. And this is especially true with defending. It's an entirely cerebral thing.
I've realized that as a defender instead of "shooting" your foot towards the ball and getting megged, just stand the attacker up. Then when he or she goes for a running then you either shield or "shoot" the ball. By doing so, it reduces the attacker's chances of going past you.

@3:09 I agree what you're saying about the best time for defender to step in, however that could be difficult for defender to determine which movement of the attacker is true or faint.
Yes exactly!! So I contain and when the attacker touches inward, I feel that's the moment he's cutting in and going for it and I lunge in, but he immediately cuts it outward and I'm in an awkward position. I play CM but I find defense very hard specially when I'm against an attacker on the wing
@@adityaverma5297 So you are right to contain inward but once he has cut outward you have pretty much won there. When he is on the flank the only real option he has is to cross or cut inside but with limited space. Make sure to block the ball with your inner foot never I repeat NEVER block with a crossed body. Thats a tip not many defenders talk about
most people mistaken that defenders has all to do with physical, tackles, blocks and being the 'cave man'. Infact, imo, defender is more on mentality, which its more important for one to be able to read the game, read the opponent, study the game flow (you are the foundation of your back bone/ core player, you help him control them tempo), dirty/hard jobs ie intimidate your opponent, fouls, trap, handcheck...etc. do remember that your main task is not taking the ball away from opponent, its leaving them nothing to produce even with the ball. Closing down opponent and minimise their options by study their movement/ preferred foot/ direction, and most importantly communication at the back, you cant do these alone, some one got to lead and some one got to follow. And finally, always remained calm and steady, and when the timing is there, you enrage like a beast to cut in/ tackle/ header/ block, then enjoy the moment feeling like scoring a goal
The resist the urge to dive in advice made a difference of night and day to me, I was diving in too often making dribbling past me pretty easy. Great video

Guys I’ll give a tip since I’ve been playing soccer most of my life as a wing man. Try to visualize what might happen in a 2v1 situation. And also when defending a player keep your eyes on the ball and keep a bit of distance so that you have time to react to the attackers moves, and also try to take the ball from them so your pressuring them into your comfort zone ( what I mean by this is when your keeping your distance a bit go in for an attack and then it’s gonna probably cause them to make a reaction so you could get back into your proper stance and your keeping your distance). I hope this helps 😊

Containment ! Just shared this same concept with my team last night. Great job explaining the value of buying more time for your team even if it is just one extra second!
What I've found successful defending versus two players and the give and go is marking backward then taking a quick step toward the passer, to make him think I'm going for him, but quickly retreating into the lane toward the other player, and I've picked off many passes that way. It takes a lot of balance because there are quick directional changes but if timed correctly you can defend that next pass. Just as forwards have moves and fakes on the ball you can give them a fake to make them get rid of the ball and then you go to where they're going to put it. If he keeps it you still have him in front of you to defend the space. My goal was to just try and get them to commit or make a bad touch then I can continue going in but with the first intention of covering the next pass back. If he bumbles I continue my fake step into him. If he has control, I'm already ready to cover the lane. I started as a forward so thinking like a forward also helps anticipate what type of move the player will make if you force him one way; if I was him what would I do? Then go there before he can.
I like the way you think and deliver content in your videos. Also I don't know much about talent but you seem to find some niche. Keep it going Tom. Cheers.
Don’t know much about soccer much less teaching it hence why I’m here. My son is a decent defender for his first year of soccer U8. He loves this sport. his thing as a defender is he likes to rip the ball away with his foot from other team. I’m not sure if it’s a bad habit and I should correct him or let him run with it and see what his mind comes up with.
One trick I've taught myself as a defender is to almost face the same way as the attacker when you're jockeying. In other words, almost face away from them and watch them over your shoulder. It's counter-intuitive, but it when you do it in conjunction with shading to one side (in order to control the space and force them in the direction you want them), it prevents you from getting beat if they try to accelerate past you, because you're already facing the way you need to run. Also, watching videos of Virgil van Dijk defend taught me a lot too, cause he's the master of winning 1v1s.
Pepe and Ramos approach also works. It's called behavioral conditioning. When you get in the head of an attacker and they are thinking they are going to get hurt 7 out 10 times you are defending, you make them nervous and that is also a hell of a successful approach.
its so interesting to me how wrong youth soccer in the US was when developing players, because the standard method of defending was to initiate the tackle so strikers don't have time to make a play. this was also like 20 years ago. am always gonna teach my kids to contain and the striker and wait for them to make a mistake before you dive in. great vid coach!
Idk why but every sport I'm into I believe in strong defense but soccer is the only sport I play where I struggle with defense. Soccer gives me a different feeling than football, basketball, or track. I'm just super offensive
@@Goluremi As per the rules and guidelines in the DFB(german football association), a direct free kick is given when the referee deems one of the following misdemeanors used recklessly, careless or too harsh: bumping jumping into another kicking or attempted kicking PUSHING (*the thing you do with the arm) punshing or attempted punshing tackling with the feet or another body part tripping or attempted tripping
@@Goluremi because it's soccer. There's a lot more coaching--it seems lately--of using arms to shove and play like a chump. You see it in the sessions teaching kids to roll around faking an injury, too. Soccer used to be called a gentleman's game. It was a game for smart athletes. Arms at your sides, it's not basketball.
As a defender if I recognize a guy is newer to the game or less confident, I just fly at them, it usually freaks them out and makes them mess up. Also, that thing about no nice defenders, yeah completely true, but always remember to be polite after the game. And shake the guy's hand.

its so interesting to me how wrong youth soccer in the US was when developing players, because the standard method of defending was to initiate the tackle so strikers don't have time to make a play. this was also like 20 years ago. am always gonna teach my kids to contain and the striker and wait for them to make a mistake before you dive in. great vid coach!
Idk why but every sport I'm into I believe in strong defense but soccer is the only sport I play where I struggle with defense. Soccer gives me a different feeling than football, basketball, or track. I'm just super offensive
Omd same I feel so annoyed not being able to go up
And it just annoys me when they lose the ball
Thank you bro I have a 3 day football/Soccer tournament and this is really helpful
my friends forced me into playing in a huge school football tournament. i rarely play football. im gonna need this video.
Thank you very much coach I became the best defender of the team.
me as a striker watching and analysing it like there is no tomorrow

Good finally defenders
Thank you men !!!
That last section about defending a 2 v 1 as last man back, you can also trap the wide player offside during the bounce pass in that scenario.
Beat goes hard
Right? 💯🎧
@Dylan Padilla-Castillo woaah...
You know, a simple saying I've learnt is
You can let the attacker through
You can let the ball through
But never, ever let both through at once
Actually useful, im not thaaat good but i been able to defend alot of people doing this
I don't agree with the "use arm" part, but the rest is accurate and nicely depicted and explained. Good video
Why not?
@@Goluremi As per the rules and guidelines in the DFB(german football association), a direct free kick is given when the referee deems one of the following misdemeanors used recklessly, careless or too harsh:
bumping
jumping into another
kicking or attempted kicking
PUSHING (*the thing you do with the arm)
punshing or attempted punshing
tackling with the feet or another body part
tripping or attempted tripping
5:49 his laugh 😂😂
Golden tips for a defender🙏👍👌
