Linkin Park was my go to "I'm feeling lost and don't want to feel" music, in that it made what I was feeling bareable. They saved me too. It broke my heart when he died. Chris didn't get me as much but it was still a great loss. I've never recovered.
Mike is a founding band member, producer and the glue to the band and Mike writes a lot of the lyrics and Chester does too. Chester was sexually abused from the age of 7 to 13 and was addicted to drugs since age 11. These songs were his way to cope. Mike wrote Breaking The Habit about Chesters drug addiction and Chester got clean, but his demons never left him alone and he spoke in interviews about it openly, Mike once said they write music for everyone to relate in their own way but he also wrote a lot about Chesters life because Chester had such a passion for the songs that he felt. I fell in love wit Linkin Park as soon as their first single hit and a huge fan all the way to Chesters passing. Great reaction! There will never be another voice like his, he makes you feel. I think what people really don't understand about having a lifelong struggle with depression and anxiety is the sheer rage that's built up in you. Everything is setting you off, and you're trying so hard to play nice because you know it's irrational, and you never let it out. You go numb.

It's definitely an outcasts' anthem, however you want to define 'outcast'. This song stood out to me and always meant a lot because, even though I had a very positive relationship with my mom growing up. She was very supportive and loving in pretty much everything I did, and I was lucky for that, but I've always struggled to connect with my peers(mainly in school) so I was bullied a lot and didn't have many friends. It was cathartic to have music like this.
Listening to Linkin Park after his death is like looking into his soul and all his depression. The songs just feel like cries for help. One More Light is another soul gripping song and MV.
I'm wondering, if that gets skewed a bit by what happened. I'm sure he did put his soul into the songs, but we as humans also tend to put too much into some things in hindsight. The type of music genre that they made songs for are usually like this and speak out to many...or at least did when I was a teenager, but I am still not sure if that automatically means all the songs are personal cry outs as well.

Personally when I look back and listen to these songs. I feel as if Chester was trying to tell us he was hurting. When you listen to his voice, you hear the pain. Linkin Park was my son Jesse's favorite band...my son passed away 17 years ago and Chester Bennington and the rest of Linkin Park helped me through some really tough times. They are now my favorite band! Rip Chester you saved so many with your beautiful voice and I am one of them...Thank you ❤️

My parents bullied me into not going the artistic route of becoming an actress. I met success, played in large theater, did a lot of things in my big city. But this life of hustling and finding jobs after jobs because you can never have a stable income unless you're a superstar got me deeper in depression as I struggled to play bills during covid. Eventually I got a more normal job and I got plenty of time to still write, act and do everything I love in my spare time. In my new community I teach my art, play important and historical writings and get involved. My parents were wrong, being educated in art SAVED my life because if I had nothing but my part-time work I would have killed myself long ago. My talents got me to travel, to meet people, to work and feel valued as a person and value other people. Art is generosity and beauty. Numb was the anthem of my teenage years. I'm so happy you like it too.

Reading the lyrics of Linkin Park, I always felt that Chester experienced it all. It's too relatable for it to not be. Granted the rest of the band could easily feel that way probably going the route of 'I'm going to be in a rock band" and the parents wondering where they 'screwed' up raising their kids to "goto college".

I grew up listening to this but the older I get, the more emotional this song becomes. I love my dad but In my early 20s I saw myself becoming more and more his shadow rather than being myself and even today after I've found my own image, I still feel that sensation from my early 20s coming out every single time the chorus hits.

There's a live video of Chris and Chester performing Chris's song Hunger Strike together! Definitely worth checking out! I've been reading a lot of conspiracy theories about Chris and Chester being murdered because they were very close to exposing something to do with child trafficking within the industry, but who knows if there's any truth to it....But with everything that's going down with diddy, it doesn't seem that far fetched! I 💯 believe there's some sick and twisted shit going down within the industry, and it definitely makes me question all of the other "overdoses", and "sui*ides" that have happened with other big artists! This is my favorite Linkin Park song! I remember listening to it when I was younger and pissed off at my mom. Then years later, I heard my daughter listening to this same song when she was upset with me! This song has bridged generations!
I still love this band. Some of my favorites are “Figure .09”, “Hit the Floor”, Papercut”, “Don’t Stay” and “One Step Closer”. That last one was channeling pure GenX anger and frustration. That and apathy were pretty much our default emotional range. If you dive into more of their music, you will not regret it.

This hits pretty deep for me. Growing up, I was a bit rebellious, was grounded a lot and had average to below-average grades. My parents didn't really ever really expressed pride in me when I did well, but would express their disappointment in me when I failed their expectations. I also moved around a lot growing up so always felt like an outsider. I feel like my parents are happy with the way my life has turned out, but I still have moments where I think I should be doing better and thoughts of being a failure. I often wonder if I would have a different outlook in life had my successes (however small) were celebrated as much as my failures were punished.
not a rap fan but my son loved Linkin Park and played them constantly. Once I paid attention I loved them. I still really only still like rap mixed with singing. The lyrics really spoke to him during the teenage/young adult years.

I, too, went down the LP rabbit hole about a year ago. I was aware of songs played on the radio and enjoyed them but never really thought twice about them. As I got older, I listen more to the lyrics so hearing them now hits different then they did back then on the radio. So I started with the tribute to Chester concert (on YT) and went on from there. I discovered so many new favorites and can relate to alot of the lyrics. RIP Chester - gone too soon 💜

I love your interpretation of this song... Completely valid! For me, it was I did go to college, and university - I achieved academically... But didn't go into any normal industry... I was insistent on starting and running my own company, and I tried and failed 7 times!! and after the first it was all bullshit trying to get me to go into the family business or get a trade... This time around, I made it, I have 90 staff and we turnover £45M a year... Now they are proud of me... There has been lots of therapy to get over the worthless feelings from the past. But we move on, and we get stronger!
I always admired Chester's singing ability, especially coupled with the way he was able to 'scream' the other lyrical parts. I'm sure that would've messed with his throat and affected his singing, but it still sounded great. When hybrid theory came out and everyone was talking about this band, I remember no one ever mentioning how great a singer Chester is, it was crazy to me looking back on it.
I recommend you check out "Papercut" from Hybrid Theory, the album opener that leaves you craving more. "Lying from you" from Meteora is another standout track, and don't sleep on the most underrated song from the same album, "Figure.09". Every track on Hybrid Theory or Meteora is phenomenal; there's not a single weak one. And for a true display of Chester's vocal prowess, give "Given up" or "QWERTY" (Live from Summer Sonic Tokyo 2006) a listen - his performance there is simply mind-blowing. ❤

Thank you for sharing your story. This song cuts to the very depth of my soul. I was a single Mom when this song came out, raising my teenage son on my own. His father had left us to, as he put it, "upgrade to a better life". He was in and out of our son's life, as it worked for him, never around to support him, but always having lots of criticisms about his life choices. My son played this song for me, it felt like it came from his life. We had a really good conversation about how he was feeling. We started to share music with each other, introducing the other to songs that were meaningful to us. This became our way to work through a very difficult period in our lives. We still share music with each other today, one of my favourite things to do.
My legends from that time are Linkin Park and Eminem, both of whom have a special way of reaching people emotionally and telling real life things. And I love it when such singers not only manage to make me dance but also touch my soul with their voice or lyrics.
When you connect to a song, you connect to it. Every Linkin Park song has a message that someone is going to relate to in some form or fashion. *Talking To Myself* is written from the perspective of "ok I keep trying to talk to you to help (which is Chester or those of us that battle the mental blegh), but I feel like I'm not getting through and I'm talking to myself". People b!tched and moaned and grouched about the song Heavy, about the One More Light album being "not like Linkin Park at all" before Chester passed away, then they acted like they'd been hit with a clue when he passed, that is something that just grates on me. The One More Light Live concert/album has some beautiful versions of older songs, Crawling is heavy, faster paced....at the concert, it's something else entirely. There's an interview he did shortly before July 20th, 2017, and he is explaining some very heavy dark things, paraphrasing the space between his ears (his mental state) can become a bad neighborhood and the guy doing the interview starts laughing at one point (not an uncomfortable laugh), I stopped the video because I was just like WTAF.
I think that's the beauty of this song. Most people can relate to the feeling, even if they can't admit it sometimes. It tunes in to your internal self. Great reaction ❤
I was fortunate enuf to see LP twice live. Once at Ozzfest circa 2000, and then again opened for Metallica at a day on the green at Candlestick Park in SF circa 2004. They were amazing both times. When I saw them at Ozzfest I didn't really know who they were - had only ever heard "Crawling" but was blow away by how good they were.
The song Leave Out All the Rest I feel was almost foreshadowing for Chester. I haven’t looked to see if he wrote it or anything but the lyrics make me think he almost felt like he would lose his never ending battle with himself and he didn’t want his loved ones or fans upset. I seen both Audioslave and Linkin Park live a few times. Chris and Chester were my favorite singers back then. Linkin Park original band name was Hybrid Theory. My friend got me into Likin Park way before they became popular. I seen Audioslave at the Aragon Ballrom in 2 days they played in Chicago. My friend had extra tickets. Chis was so amazing live and I’m glad I got to see him live. Tom Morrello is from Libertyville Illinois. I lived 20 minutes from Libertyville Illinois. Tom Morrello mother came up on stage and she walks up to the mic and says this is the greatest fu**ing band in the world and walks offstage. I was yelling that is Tom Morello mother. I Rage Against The Machine fan which is the same members as Audioslave. Besides singers. When Audioslave broke up as a band. They started a new band called Street Sweeper Social Club. The singer is a rapper from Chicago. Mike Shenoda had a side project called Fort Minor in 2005 is area. Then doing his own music under his name as a rapper. Idk if you ever hear of Hollywood Undead which is a Rap Rock group
Glad you had the strength and courage to go for your own goals. Hard sometimes to let go of one's own dreams for your kids when you've been responsible for them for so long, and seen so much potential in them... but it's a critical step. Parents, let your kids know you love them for them, not for what they do (even and esp if it's not the path you picked for them)... and read up on adhd, anxiety, and depression. They're real things that are super hard to recognize from the outside -- procrastinating, sleeping too much or too little or at odd times, getting "stuck" -- this isn't laziness. It'll help your relationship with your kid immensely.
Speak your truth. My parents were like that too. I found my own path , but my parents never supported my choices until they saw my success. Then they were mad cuz I didn't welcome them back into my life now that they were proud of me. I made them earn their way back into my life. Wrong or not those were my terms, and they understood that. So B4 they passed we finally came together as a family and accepted what the journey was.
All of these years, and I never noticed those scars. I have them on my left arm too, from when I was 14 and my stepfather beat me around the face with a book, splitting my lip. I was cooking spaghetti bolognaise for tea. My little sisters were screaming. His own son, older than me, came out and swore at him and he threatened him too. He physically kicked me down our concrete back steps, it was Easter 1975 in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne Australia, it was dark, and I just ran. I was hysterical and didn’t know where to go, so I ran to a friends so they could ring my father. My friends mum, Olive, was wonderful to me and tried to contact dad, who was not home so I stayed with them for the night, and sliced my arm, just because I felt worthless. I was ashamed of the scars for years but I don’t lie about how I got them anymore. Thank you for showing me that little snippet of the video. Oh Chester, you are so missed 💔
As someone who listened to his parents and went to college, I can assure u that u did the right thing for you... Because my going to college without the resources I needed from my parents was a recipe for disaster... and I was really not into that whole "jumping through hoops for a paper degree" so that I might move up the financial ladder... I hated going but I didn't know what else to do. If I had had more confidence in myself and knew which way I wanted to go, I'd have been a lot happier in life instead of ending up in Miseryville where I currently reside... FYI - Yes, Chester Bennington wrote the lyrics to "Numb"... it was about him self-medicating to make his life more tolerable after the sexual trauma he had experienced as a minor... He and Chris Cornell (of Soundgarden/ Audioslave) were friends, and Chris died in May of 2017... Chester sang at his funeral... Apparently, Chris Cornell's death did affect Chester and 2 months later, Chester Bennington took his own life in July 2017 ... just before he was supposed to do a full N. American tour w/ Linkin Park (It got canceled) Chester talked about his struggles w/ alcohol and drugs which stemmed from his childhood traumas... it cost him his first marriage w/ 1st wife Samantha... In 2003, Linkin Park had a #1 album 'Meteora' on the charts and were making bank$$$... but by 2004, Chester said he was getting divorced and back living in an apartment... He met his 2nd wife Talinda and they married in 2005 after his divorce was finalized. He had a child and soon, he and Talinda had 3 more kids... Linkin Park was back in action in 2007 w/ 'Minutes to Midnight'... and were making bank$$ again. However, Chester's success never seemed to give him the relief in life that he craved. Chester said: "...no matter how I'm feeling, I always find myself struggling with certain patterns of behavior… I find myself stuck in the same thing that keeps repeating over and over again, and I'm just, like, 'How did I end up…? How am I in this?' " At some point in 2017, Chester must have felt like this was the only path left and took his own life rather than face any more pain and depression.
Any parent who expresses disappointment in their child has made a huge mistake. The first half of my life was f-- up after f-- up but my father always gave me love and encouragement. When he hugged you he’d tell you how beautiful you are and how proud he is. My father is passed now and I am so grateful to have every good memory of my dad telling me how great I was. This is how we should treat our children, our spouse and all our loved ones, this is how you want to be remembered
My parents were total opposites in their expectations. Nothing I ever did was good enough for my dad. (To this day he says every one of 5 kids was a disappointment) My mother said she didn't care if we dug ditches for a living, as long as we could support ourselves, were reasonably happy doung it, and did a good job, it was fine with her.

Linkin Park was my son Jesse's favorite band...my son passed away 17 years ago and Chester Bennington and the rest of Linkin Park helped me through some really tough times. They are now my favorite band! Rip Chester you saved so many with your beautiful voice and I am one of them...Thank you ❤️

My parents bullied me into not going the artistic route of becoming an actress. I met success, played in large theater, did a lot of things in my big city. But this life of hustling and finding jobs after jobs because you can never have a stable income unless you're a superstar got me deeper in depression as I struggled to play bills during covid. Eventually I got a more normal job and I got plenty of time to still write, act and do everything I love in my spare time. In my new community I teach my art, play important and historical writings and get involved. My parents were wrong, being educated in art SAVED my life because if I had nothing but my part-time work I would have killed myself long ago.
My talents got me to travel, to meet people, to work and feel valued as a person and value other people. Art is generosity and beauty. Numb was the anthem of my teenage years. I'm so happy you like it too.

Chester took his life on Chris Cornell's birthday. Chris had took his life a few weeks earlier. So sad that these two musical geniuses could not be saved. Definitely check out Linkin Park's performance on Jimmy Kimmel "One More Light." The emotion from Chester in that performance was heartbreaking 💜💜

Granted the rest of the band could easily feel that way probably going the route of 'I'm going to be in a rock band" and the parents wondering where they 'screwed' up raising their kids to "goto college".

I love my dad but In my early 20s I saw myself becoming more and more his shadow rather than being myself and even today after I've found my own image, I still feel that sensation from my early 20s coming out every single time the chorus hits.

I've been reading a lot of conspiracy theories about Chris and Chester being murdered because they were very close to exposing something to do with child trafficking within the industry, but who knows if there's any truth to it....But with everything that's going down with diddy, it doesn't seem that far fetched! I still love this band. Some of my favorites are “Figure .09”, “Hit the Floor”, Papercut”, “Don’t Stay” and “One Step Closer”. That last one was channeling pure GenX anger and frustration. That and apathy were pretty much our default emotional range. If you dive into more of their music, you will not regret it.

This hits pretty deep for me. Growing up, I was a bit rebellious, was grounded a lot and had average to below-average grades. My parents didn't really ever really expressed pride in me when I did well, but would express their disappointment in me when I failed their expectations. I also moved around a lot growing up so always felt like an outsider. I feel like my parents are happy with the way my life has turned out, but I still have moments where I think I should be doing better and thoughts of being a failure. I often wonder if I would have a different outlook in life had my successes (however small) were celebrated as much as my failures were punished.

I, too, went down the LP rabbit hole about a year ago. I was aware of songs played on the radio and enjoyed them but never really thought twice about them. As I got older, I listen more to the lyrics so hearing them now hits different then they did back then on the radio. So I started with the tribute to Chester concert (on YT) and went on from there. I discovered so many new favorites and can relate to alot of the lyrics. RIP Chester - gone too soon 💜

I always admired Chester's singing ability, especially coupled with the way he was able to 'scream' the other lyrical parts. I'm sure that would've messed with his throat and affected his singing, but it still sounded great. When hybrid theory came out and everyone was talking about this band, I remember no one ever mentioning how great a singer Chester is, it was crazy to me looking back on it.

"Lying from you" from Meteora is another standout track, and don't sleep on the most underrated song from the same album, "Figure.09". Every track on Hybrid Theory or Meteora is phenomenal; there's not a single weak one. And for a true display of Chester's vocal prowess, give "Given up" or "QWERTY" (Live from Summer Sonic Tokyo 2006) a listen - his performance there is simply mind-blowing. ❤

Thank you for sharing your story. This song cuts to the very depth of my soul. I was a single Mom when this song came out, raising my teenage son on my own. His father had left us to, as he put it, "upgrade to a better life". He was in and out of our son's life, as it worked for him, never around to support him, but always having lots of criticisms about his life choices. My son played this song for me, it felt like it came from his life. We had a really good conversation about how he was feeling. We started to share music with each other, introducing the other to songs that were meaningful to us. This became our way to work through a very difficult period in our lives. We still share music with each other today, one of my favourite things to do.

When you connect to a song, you connect to it. Every Linkin Park song has a message that someone is going to relate to in some form or fashion. *Talking To Myself* is written from the perspective of "ok I keep trying to talk to you to help (which is Chester or those of us that battle the mental blegh), but I feel like I'm not getting through and I'm talking to myself". People b!tched and moaned and grouched about the song Heavy, about the One More Light album being "not like Linkin Park at all" before Chester passed away, then they acted like they'd been hit with a clue when he passed, that is something that just grates on me.
The One More Light Live concert/album has some beautiful versions of older songs, Crawling is heavy, faster paced....at the concert, it's something else entirely. There's an interview he did shortly before July 20th, 2017, and he is explaining some very heavy dark things, paraphrasing the space between his ears (his mental state) can become a bad neighborhood and the guy doing the interview starts laughing at one point (not an uncomfortable laugh), I stopped the video because I was just like WTAF.
Chester saved more lives than he could have ever imagined. RIP such a kind soul. May he never suffer again.

I was fortunate enuf to see LP twice live. Once at Ozzfest circa 2000, and then again opened for Metallica at a day on the green at Candlestick Park in SF circa 2004.
They were amazing both times. When I saw them at Ozzfest I didn't really know who they were - had only ever heard "Crawling" but was blow away by how good they were.
The girl in this video is Briana Evigan , who played Andie in Step Up 2 The Streets. Her dad is a famous actor his name is Greg Evigan.
The song Leave Out All the Rest I feel was almost foreshadowing for Chester. I haven’t looked to see if he wrote it or anything but the lyrics make me think he almost felt like he would lose his never ending battle with himself and he didn’t want his loved ones or fans upset. It is a really good song that you should check out. RIP Chester.

I seen both Audioslave and Linkin Park live a few times. Chris and Chester were my favorite singers back then. Linkin Park original band name was Hybrid Theory. My friend got me into Likin Park way before they became popular. I seen Audioslave at the Aragon Ballrom in 2 days they played in Chicago. My friend had extra tickets. Chis was so amazing live and I’m glad I got to see him live. Tom Morrello is from Libertyville Illinois. I lived 20 minutes from Libertyville Illinois. Tom Morrello mother came up on stage and she walks up to the mic and says this is the greatest fu**ing band in the world and walks offstage. I was yelling that is Tom Morello mother. I Rage Against The Machine fan which is the same members as Audioslave. Besides singers. When Audioslave broke up as a band. They started a new band called Street Sweeper Social Club. The singer is a rapper from Chicago. Mike Shenoda had a side project called Fort Minor in 2005 is area. Then doing his own music under his name as a rapper. Idk if you ever hear of Hollywood Undead which is a Rap Rock group

Glad you had the strength and courage to go for your own goals. Hard sometimes to let go of one's own dreams for your kids when you've been responsible for them for so long, and seen so much potential in them... but it's a critical step. Parents, let your kids know you love them for them, not for what they do (even and esp if it's not the path you picked for them)... and read up on adhd, anxiety, and depression. They're real things that are super hard to recognize from the outside -- procrastinating, sleeping too much or too little or at odd times, getting "stuck" -- this isn't laziness. It'll help your relationship with your kid immensely.
Speak your truth. My parents were like that too. I found my own path , but my parents never supported my choices until they saw my success. Then they were mad cuz I didn't welcome them back into my life now that they were proud of me. I made them earn their way back into my life. Wrong or not those were my terms, and they understood that. So B4 they passed we finally came together as a family and accepted what the journey was.
All of these years, and I never noticed those scars. I have them on my left arm too, from when I was 14 and my stepfather beat me around the face with a book, splitting my lip. I was cooking spaghetti bolognaise for tea. My little sisters were screaming. His own son, older than me, came out and swore at him and he threatened him too. He physically kicked me down our concrete back steps, it was Easter 1975 in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne Australia, it was dark, and I just ran. I was hysterical and didn’t know where to go, so I ran to a friends so they could ring my father. My friends mum, Olive, was wonderful to me and tried to contact dad, who was not home so I stayed with them for the night, and sliced my arm, just because I felt worthless. I was ashamed of the scars for years but I don’t lie about how I got them anymore. Thank you for showing me that little snippet of the video. Oh Chester, you are so missed 💔

As someone who listened to his parents and went to college, I can assure u that u did the right thing for you... Because my going to college without the resources I needed from my parents was a recipe for disaster... and I was really not into that whole "jumping through hoops for a paper degree" so that I might move up the financial ladder... I hated going but I didn't know what else to do.
If I had had more confidence in myself and knew which way I wanted to go, I'd have been a lot happier in life instead of ending up in Miseryville where I currently reside...
FYI - Yes, Chester Bennington wrote the lyrics to "Numb"... it was about him self-medicating to make his life more tolerable after the sexual trauma he had experienced as a minor... He and Chris Cornell (of Soundgarden/ Audioslave) were friends, and Chris died in May of 2017... Chester sang at his funeral... Apparently, Chris Cornell's death did affect Chester and 2 months later, Chester Bennington took his own life in July 2017 ... just before he was supposed to do a full N. American tour w/ Linkin Park (It got canceled)
Chester talked about his struggles w/ alcohol and drugs which stemmed from his childhood traumas... it cost him his first marriage w/ 1st wife Samantha... In 2003, Linkin Park had a #1 album 'Meteora' on the charts and were making bank$$$... but by 2004, Chester said he was getting divorced and back living in an apartment... He met his 2nd wife Talinda and they married in 2005 after his divorce was finalized. He had a child and soon, he and Talinda had 3 more kids... Linkin Park was back in action in 2007 w/ 'Minutes to Midnight'... and were making bank$$ again. However, Chester's success never seemed to give him the relief in life that he craved.
Chester said:
"...no matter how I'm feeling, I always find myself struggling with certain patterns of behavior… I find myself stuck in the same thing that keeps repeating over and over again, and I'm just, like, 'How did I end up…? How am I in this?' "
At some point in 2017, Chester must have felt like this was the only path left and took his own life rather than face any more pain and depression.
Any parent who expresses disappointment in their child has made a huge mistake. The first half of my life was f-- up after f-- up but my father always gave me love and encouragement. When he hugged you he’d tell you how beautiful you are and how proud he is. My father is passed now and I am so grateful to have every good memory of my dad telling me how great I was. This is how we should treat our children, our spouse and all our loved ones, this is how you want to be remembered
My parents were total opposites in their expectations. Nothing I ever did was good enough for my dad. (To this day he says every one of 5 kids was a disappointment) My mother said she didn't care if we dug ditches for a living, as long as we could support ourselves, were reasonably happy doung it, and did a good job, it was fine with her.
