IMHO; In house lawyer Pros: Less competitive Better hours Less stressful Generally better atmosphere but you're always an employee. Cons: Less challenging Restricted career/salary progression Law firm will not recruit you after you leave in house. It's relatively easy to go in house (most lawyers go in house in a company that was their client when they worked in a law firm) but it's not easy to go from in house to law firm Primary focus for a company where you are in house, means they won't focus particularly on the legal department, compared to a law firm, where it IS a legal department. If you're a fresh graduate out of law school and have the options open to you, I would definitely advise working in a law firm first and then, after 5-10 years, move in house (if ever - if you really want the safety) [or just open your own firm]. But everybody is different.
Hi! if you work in a law firm for a few years, and then go in - house, can you expect to make more $$ than someone who goes straight to in house after graduation? Like 6 - figures? And do most in house lawyers you know work 40 hours/wk? Thanks !!
THIS GIRL IS BEAUTIFUL BY HEART. GOD BLESS HER SOUL, HER FUTURE CHILDREN, HER PREVIOUS GENERATION AND HER HUSBAND. I mean who gives such good honest info. in today's times? No One. Thank you Britts
As a lawyer in GA, starting out by I only made $55k and currently make only $65k going into my third years of practice. Most in house jobs start off at six figures so starting out in house I would recommend rather than niching right out of law school. When you niche right out of law school, it’s hard to make a lateral move later because you only know one area of law. This video was very bomb though! Thank you! Trying to transition into in house counsel now
had my first interview last week and got my first job, started today as a legal trainee in-house :) i'll have the possibility to become an legal advisor after few months pass and I get comfortable :3 so excited
I've been an in-house lawyer for +5 years. I'm currently working for a multinational O&G company in Colombia, and it's actually pretty common to see in-house lawyers getting opportunities around the globe. I know it's not for everyone, but I love it!
Just found your channel and really like your content! (: Excited to watch more videos, especially as I'm interested in New York as well as work as a lawyer!
not unless the company is being sued for something and they want to watch outside counsel or if they will handle the case in house. or if they are in house counsel that deals with litigation then they might, but usually you hire outside counsel to do that.
If an attorneys leaves a big law firm after about 5 years, understanding they will take a pay cut if they do so, is it possible for them to go in house and make 200K+. for their first year?
If they are a high position like head of legal, general counsel or MAYBE a senior counsel/director position at a well paying company they will probably make 200K+
Wow, thank you so much love this channel been a follower for ages. Kindly make a video on how to study in law school, like the approach. How to get good grades. How to IRAC. How do i remember what i learnt, cause law material is so dense. Moreover, how to do legal essays i struggle to write them. I need weeks just to do a 3000 word essay. How to cope witb mass readings. Etc Please help me Regards, Rachel
Hi I’m a high school student and I am interested in being a lawyer but I don’t know what law to do! I was wondering if you know of any shadowing programs or any advice. Thank you and love your videos❤️
I don't know of any shadowing programs offhand but I think when you get into college you'll have more resources and will be able to look for internships etc. to help figure things out.
What type of work you do in house, is it like reviewing contact & agreement, just wondering is it a complicated job for fresh graduate with no experience?
yes reviewing contracts mostly and then dealing with employee issues or other things that the company needs help with. I'll have a video all about it! it's not that complicated but it could be difficult for a fresh grad because you have no experience.
Perhaps the New York law market is a lot different than the Chicago market I practice in, but I think your statement on relative pay is too black and white. A lot depends on the size of the company and the size of the firm you are comparing. Comparing like size company and firm, I'd agree with you. But a corporate lawyer working for IBM is generally going to make more than a firm lawyer working at at 4 person firm assuming similar years of practice.
yes it is - it might be a bit harder if the skills and knowledge are not as transferrable to an in house role but it also depends on what in house role you are applying for. there might be litigation focused roles in house.
But a caveat, law firm lawyers work crazy hours and generally incredibly stressful lives. The trade off is that work in law firms is generally more interesting.
it really depends on what kind of job you get. it's hard to go in house right away so if you have to start off like I did doing a legal assistant position it could be $60k?
Hi Brittany! 2 questions: what is the best time to leave the law firm and go in house ? 3 years? 4 years? Also - if you work in a law firm for a few years, and then go in - house, can you expect to make more $$ than someone who goes straight to in house after graduation? Thanks !!
I would say probably 3 or 4 years but it depends on how much experience you are getting and how many years of experience the job you want to apply to is asking for. Usually I see that for entry level in house positions if it's a junior level (not the general counsel etc.) it's probably at least 4 or 5 years of experience. Yes, you would most likely make more money if you worked at a law firm first because you will have more leverage and they know you are making a lot so they will likely give you a higher offer. Versus someone like me who went in house right away they know you're more "desperate" and willing to take a lower salary.
Hello!! I fell in love with your vlogs! I’m living in Texas but I’m originally from Manhattan New York, and I’m going to get my bachelor in bilingual education. I really want to go to law school, and focus on immigration law. Can immigration lawyers work in house as well? Also can immigration lawyers work for petroleum companies such as Shell? Thank you!

they can but it's pretty rare. I am not sure about Shell but I assume larger companies like Shell would have in house counsel and if they deal with immigration issues they would hire in house counsel. However, I feel like most companies use outside counsel for immigration so you would have to work at a law firm.
@@BrittanyTran I agree - immigration can be part of an employment lawyer's responsibilities but it's extremely rare that a business would have to have a dedicated immigration attorney.
Hi Rubel, It does happen - less so into marketing perhaps, but lots of examples of lawyers going into commercial roles within large multinationals (e.g. sales, country CEO, commercial director). Accenture's CEO is a lawyer (their former General Counsel). Often it's lawyers who support sales that choose transition into sales related commercial roles as they already take active part in negotiations and drafting contracts with company clients.
What kind of lawyer do you want to be or what kind of lawyer are you?

@brittany tran how much generally do transactional in house lawyers get paid salary?
I mention this in my Q&A video!
Great content, the best of luck 👏👏
Very informative, would you mind making a video about in-house medical lawyer.
Sorry I don't know anything about being an in house medical lawyer!
If your are a in house counsel would u visit the courtroom as much as u would in outside counsel
no, I never go to court.

I am class of 2019 at AmLaw 100 and just got in-house counsel offer for $193K. Company is energy/fortune 100.

Applying to college this summer and can’t choose between going into law or medical field... hahahaha the stress is high 😂

Is it possible to be a civil litigator for a big law firm and switch to in house? Or how likely is that?
yes it is - it might be a bit harder if the skills and knowledge are not as transferrable to an in house role but it also depends on what in house role you are applying for. there might be litigation focused roles in house.
So do law firm lawyers or in house lawyers make more money?
law firm lawyers.

Law firm lawyers but you easily work over 60 hours a week

Hi Elide, unfortunately there is virtually no demand for immigration lawyers in-house (I am an in-house legal recruiter).

I'm sure it is, it may be difficult but I don't think it's impossible.

Can you be an in house human rights lawyer?
Hmm I'm not sure - possibly if you work for maybe a non-profit or corporation that focuses on human rights.
Very informative. Thanks. Does this comment count as entry
it does as long as you also subscribe and follow in instagram!
Would you ever consider selling your old shoes?
probably not because I usually wear them all until they are broken or unusable.
Brittany Tran once they're broken or unusable I'd buy them haha
