Nobody did cover tunes like Van Halen. Ed was great. Mike and Al were solid and Dave even if he didn't have great voice, instilled the swagger and attitude that helped make them a spectacular group.
Eddie played Gibbons licks great & Billy loved Eddie. He said ED would hold the top 9 spots in his top ten list of guitarist's & whoever was 2nd best would be number 10.
@@randyrudman1601 thanks! So weird & cool to get your reply eleven years after making a comment I had no idea that I had made anymore nor even listened to this vid! But it (the cover by VH) freaking rocks wow haha!!
Lots of tunes use that riff...pretty common. It is used on shake your hips by the stones, written by slim harpo, I think, but who knows who used it first???
La Grange was their big ending song of the night at Gazzarri's when I was 18. The one with all the girls on the dance floor. It was one of the first songs they replaced in their set list with an original ("Somebody Get Me A Doctor" and "Voodoo Queen" were some other ones from the early days that weren't quite ready for the first album). At the time this would have been recorded, Van Halen probably didn't have any original songs that they were performing at bars yet. You could tell they weren't quite Van Fucking Halen yet.
M-Fing Nasty and Vicious!! Gawd Damn, this is one Hot band, or Was one Hot band. Sounds like this was Ed in the Pre-Floyd Rose era. No towering whammy bar dives. Damn Good!
@DarthKazi cool like the info on EVH and the fact the info was put on here to be informative as recently I stopped making comments cause I was bombed by people who want to argue....or tell me I don't know what I am talking about etc...etc....also when your talking dive bombs and crazy trem work don't forget about the obvious guy Hendrix Peace out Darth.....
cool rocker MR. EVH got alot of influence and ideas from doing these zz top covers...this one he got hot for teacher, bottoms up, and alot of his solo phrasing and delivery over the years from the big bread wearing, big riffin' rockin' hot rod driving Billy Gibbons the forgotten rock and roll guitar hero....go check out Heard it on the X from zz top then check out Mean street.....by the way this ending is the same ending as bottoms up on VH 2.....
@lefty99riffs Yeah Hendrix did a ton of tremolo things, but I don't remember hearing the "open-string dive bomb in the middle of some noodling" thing that Beck did in the early 70's. But whatever. Van Halen had a 300+ song repertoire, so Ed's "influences" were much wider than he usually admits.
yo show stopper cool bro where did you read that or see that I have been telling people for years like decades about the ZZ Gibbons and Van Halen connection and most tell me evh sounds nothing like gibbons...and that I'm crazy....not knocking EVH at all bro the guys my top all time..pretty much and I have seen alot of eddie stuff where he mentions clapton and page mostly
EVH was in my op, one of the top innovators of modern rock. Of course there would be nobody without Hendrix, and between Over Under Sideways Down and Truth, Beck sounded like no one else.. Technique is cool. but not everything. On that note, this song as an example, no guitarist can touch Billy Gibbons for the down dirty "COOL" factor. (Well Hendrix was not a guitarist, he came down from Mt. Olympus) Like BB King, its not how many notes, but how you play them .
@lefty99riffs Those were early influences. But he and Alex had somewhere near 300+ cover songs they'd worked out, so "influences" were abounds. He's also cited Brian May, Billy G, Jeff Beck (the first guy to do dive bombs with a tremolo), Allan Holdsworth and others. He, like most people, absorb influence from every song you learn. That, and coupled with his classical training, is why his rhythm playing and song composing is to diverse and complex.
Eddie has that underlying "swing" in his playing that few guitarist have. The master.
So true, The solos are very well known, but he certainly is one of the best rhythm guitar players ever..
Crazy how fast he can swing
Imagine being in a small hollywood club during the disco era and hearing this
Who's here because of Joe Rogan's interview?
yep, watching it now. Had to hear for myself, lol.
Me.
Billy Gibbons probably thinks this is funny
Same
HELL YES Andrew !!!!!
Two of the greatest bands ever, period.
Van Dave and Van Sam
Nobody did cover tunes like Van Halen. Ed was great. Mike and Al were solid and Dave even if he didn't have great voice, instilled the swagger and attitude that helped make them a spectacular group.
wow that solo was awesome :)
Eddie played Gibbons licks great & Billy loved Eddie. He said ED would hold the top 9 spots in his top ten list of guitarist's & whoever was 2nd best would be number 10.
gotta love eddie's old jump suits, great post
From 2:11 until 2:32, Eddie is playing the same end-of-solo-jam as Mark Farner did in the Grand Funk hit "Footstompin' Music". Cool !!!
Zepster77 yeppers!! Now I wanna go hear GFRR
good call- absolutely right, just relistened and you nailed that
@@randyrudman1601 thanks! So weird & cool to get your reply eleven years after making a comment I had no idea that I had made anymore nor even listened to this vid! But it (the cover by VH) freaking rocks wow haha!!
His tone is unbelievable!
Nice. VH got Take Your Whiskey Home and Bottom's Up out of this deal.
I have always thought this song was the inspiration for "Hot for Teacher". Anyone else?
Bottoms Up!
Yeah, they use the same chords, so im sure eddie took this song and made it his own
Great song, great pix, great post-nice work!!!
EVH adds so many fills it's awesome 🎸 🎶

Hard to argue with that!
Where do you find these rare recordings of VH? Very sweet!

Lots of tunes use that riff...pretty common. It is used on shake your hips by the stones, written by slim harpo, I think, but who knows who used it first???
Bottoms Up! For example:)

There is a chord progression at 0:46...does anyone know what the chords are by chance?
Tim Pierce brought me here! Jesus Christ! ... that guitar tone.... RIP Eddie
Fucking awesome VH cover!
Need more old Eddie stuff pre Hager
Van Halen > Van Hagar
millennial judgements on a raw 70s performance low grade recording.
Way more badass than what people do now live
is this from that duarte soundboard some guy is trying to sell?
Don't know if this makes sense, but VH has always sounded like ZZ Top speeded up to me

Oh yeay
2:05 does this make him the GOAT
@RonBurg92 They actually do sound kind of like each other. I never thought of it that way before, though.
yeah, fender brother. thanx for sharing. ps. no surprize what evh can do.
@theShowStopper321 Yep, that's totally Bottoms Up in the making....
do you know how I could meet EVH 🎸 🎶
"Come um-um-um-um-um baby, bottoms up"
Joe Rogan Experience #1256 mutha f’n closer song, nobody can go up after.
C'est pas mal quand même ça.
ZZ TOP SINGS THAT SONG
yo show stopper cool bro where did you read that or see that I have been telling people for years like decades about the ZZ Gibbons and Van Halen connection and most tell me evh sounds nothing like gibbons...and that I'm crazy....not knocking EVH at all bro the guys my top all time..pretty much and I have seen alot of eddie stuff where he mentions clapton and page mostly
Guitar is turned up to 11.
If this replaced one of the forgettable covers from diver down, (obviously not dancing in the street) diver down would be a top 3 van Halen album
Can you add art of guitar with Mike teaching Eddie van Halen
EVH was in my op, one of the top innovators of modern rock.

yeah a lot of people don't realise it as well
EVH says sometimes he has to puke before he goes on because of stagefright.
+gtrfrkkkkk and then he puked after the show because of the alcohol...lol...
..because of ‘stage freight’ sureee that’s only thing involved in the mix
Lagrange isnt SW Texas
Thought this was zz top boom boom boom

I bet Billy Gibbons would give his nod to that.

You don't say
D tour
Eddie is keeping up with the guitar but Dave caint hang with Billy Gibbons voice.... nobody can
I'm just glad Pat Boone never covered this....or did he?

Meh
No shit
I'm sorry folks this is god awful...If I were Billy Gibbons I would pull my beard out in protest!
+Tommy Flamacue i think its starts off raw and tuff...they get their grove as it goes along...in my op...zztop no beard...no drummer!?
+Tommy Flamacue Billy disagrees.
