  • We're TIRED of hearing that you have to double-wrap your fence wire! Why?? Is there a benefit? Today we test multiple fence wire termination knots and measure the breaking strength of single-wrapped vs double-wrapped termination knots. All you couch fencers may not like these results, but the numbers don't lie!

    As a small fence company I love watching these videos and I feel like I would get along with y'all well and y'all's sense of humor...only time I've ever double wrapped is h braces for state inspected fence according to their requirements

      Sadly state requirements are almost always behind the times when it comes to fence...

    As a lifetime fence man I double wrap because it's easier for me to tighten it and keep it slipping up and down. As for strength probably not.

      If you like doing it we say go for it. We simply argue that it isn’t needed or adding any value to the fence. Keep on fencing!

    The upper part of your legs aint seen sun since you used to swim in the lake as a child. Great look 🤠 !! Love your videos. With your help I went from total n00b to building my own ~3,500+ foot fence in about a month. Now I like fencing so much I might start a company doing it.

    We double wrap all of our barb wire only to add convenience for the rancher on the off chance they have to undo. Then they will have a fresh piece to re-wrap

    Stubbies are an Australian thing and a Kiwi is a person from New Zealand. I am sure the Kiwis do like to copy us Australians, but i think you meant "...all the Aussies that use these in their ordinary fencing adventures". Surprisingly that is the thing that triggered me the most in this video :P. Good video. I had this argument with my neighbor a few years ago because i single-wrapped. I wish i had this video back then. Thanks for the quality content.

      Thanks Tom! You'll have to forgive our geographical ignorance. 😁 We learned from a Kiwi who didn't bother to tell us they got it from the Aussies. 😉

    You should make a fixture out of a tube and tie off to simulate a fence post to stretch from so it’s not killing the wire with the gripper. Granted 1200 lbs is probably tighter than you’ll ever stretch fence, it would just be cool to see the gripper eliminated as a cause of failure.

    What diameter pipe do you use for the corners? And I'm guessing you can't drive those corners with a handheld gas powered driver?

    • @SWiFence
      @SWiFence  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      4 inch diameter pipe on the corners and no you are not able to drive those with a hand pounder

    Hold on, hold on; about the ratchet strainers and springs... I build a lot of fence each year for a non-pro (10-20 miles) so I really want some clarification here. And before people get all riled up, I actually want to learn other people’s ways and techniques, not just start crap on a comment board, so don’t take this as a threat to YOUR way of doing it, I’m questioning MY way of doing it.
    I use ratchet strainers and springs on each strand of HT smoothe wire every quarter or half mile depending on turns and stuff. I terminate about the same interval as well. I do so for shock absorption from deer hitting the wire and stretch for when trees fall on the fence. It seems to work great. The wire only vibrates from the deer and pops right back up when you cut off the tree.
    It would be WAY cheaper to not use them. So what do y’all do? Just strain them by feel from the end and tie off? How about tree and deer damage without them?

    • @SWiFence
      @SWiFence  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you stretch the fence tight enough the deer will bounce off it. As for trees falling on the fence if it’s woven wire there’s probably going to be an issue regardless. If it’s high tensile wire it’s going to need unequipped and re-stretched anyhow. It wouldn’t make much of a difference to have to add a Splice where there was a broken wire. We personally avoid Springs at all costs and have very few uses for ratchet strainers with short runs being the main one.

    • @SWiFence

      They are fine in certain applications like keeping short stretches tight. However, using them in conjunction with springs is a waste.

      When wrapping the pipe it only made things worse because trying to keep the wraps together and neat was more difficult. A single warp would have been much easier.
