I'm in "love" with Mahler's music all of it. This his first opus at 19 years old. Praise isn't enough for his music. I simply am in meinem himmel when I hear his music. Great SSO! I'm also a great fan of Australia's musicians and singers. In Rome I met Dame Joan with her husband Maestro Bonynge who were down to earth and kind. 👍

I love this work. Amazing mastery for a composer of 19. The orchestra is very fine and the brass, upon which Mahler always places great demands, is fantastic. Strong soprano and tenor soloists. The mezzo is fantastic. The baritone seemed to struggle. Fantastic chorus. Overall, very fine. 😀

Thanks to this piece I started learning German when I saw it in person performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2011.

A fine live performance of the formative Mahler masterpiece. To really know his music, one should be acquainted with Mahler's early works, wherein lie many of the roots of all that followed.

Lovely performance! And the offstage brass and percussion didn't lag behind the beat; not easy from seeing the conductor via telemonitor. Now someone get that lovely soprano some nice 1.5 ct color E or F diamond stud earrings!

Sorry this is such a late reply but I only just saw your question. It was on 4 December 2019 and I was fortunate to actually be there for it. Even more than that, as I am a very frequent subscriber to the SSO I was invited to a rehearsal prior to the performance which only about 20 or so people attended so I felt incredibly privileged. I love everything Mahler and think this much neglected work is brilliant and this rendition of it by the SSO under Simone Young is the version I love most of all. A pity it has not been released as a CD.

Sometimes tempi drop a bit too much, and pronunciation is underestimated. I love the orchestra and choir. Bravo! Btw: Has anybody ever seen a soloist with crossed legs?
