@@jangrace3652 I think too much stock is placed in seeing another black person. Just because they're black doesn't mean they are nice or even want to talk to you or acknowledge you. I lived in Japan while I was in the military an experienced this from other black military personnel as well as other Americans living in Japan. It Just depends on the other person's personality.

it's a shame the way black folk ignore each other. you even see this idiotic behaviour in the states where you encounter another black person on a predominately white job school or neighborhood. most seem to go out of their way to avoid you just to show that they are impartial

What she says about people being defensive about Japan is so true. And it gets old. People act like they forgot that Japan is a country and not just one street with Anime on one side and maid cafes on the other side. It's an entire country with many cities and even more towns and other areas scattered throughout and there's good and bad in it like everywhere else.

I appreciate this video. This feeling is not only when you are in Japan or Asia. when I lived in somewhere Europe (really somewhere), in many circumstances, I felt I didn't belong to anyone culturally, racially, mentally. What happens to us when we travel or live abroad for a while is we think the world is like our home country in some way. But in reality it is not. She might say the same thing if she were in somewhere Europe too. Same as Europe, you think Europe (depends on where you live but) is like what you see on the media? No...like she said do your research. Japan is not like what the media shows either. Many images even come from Tokyo. One of the reasons why people do not like the country is they do not speak the local language well or refuse to learn but instead blaming locals who do not speak English mostly. I was sad for her saying a lot of misconceptions about Japan which I found interesting and appreciate her honesty. I've currently lived in U.S but not all places in U.S is like what she mentioned either...really if you define "western culture" there are so many kinds of it...Hope she will find Japan more positive someday. It has ups and downs but there are many things that you might like about the country. Wish her all the best :)

Not to be best friends, but just kind of someone you can rely on if you need something or have questions and they can point you in the right direction if they themselves can't help you. Some experiences are unique to just certain groups like men, women, and yes many times Black people's experience in foreign lands where there aren't that many of them is very different - not saying bad or good. Anytime I see black women who are mean to other black women for NO reason at all, it usually comes from a place of inner insecurity &/or jealousy. Its like they secretly admire you, but resent the fact that they admire you and project that outwardly as if there is something you did wrong just by your mere existence. I don't consider myself particularly pretty but I have very pretty ladies in my family who are grounded and not pretentious and don't even see how pretty they are and I always laugh when they're like, "This sistah was mean to me and I had to back her up or those sistahs were hatin on me and i did nothing to them" --it's jealousy. MOST black women I think lift each other up and celebrate each toher, but some black women have this innate sense that they have to compete and be the "all-that" chick in the room. Sometimes I wonder if its generational, because we were raised to respect each other with dignity and present ourselves with poise because we had to represent what white people refused to acknowledge about us, the awe were intelligent and deserving of respect. So if whites refuse to respect us, we HAVE to respect each other. My elders were from the time of the civil rights moment and black dignity and unit was a MAJOR thing taught to us growing up, that a young black girl or woman should be beyond reproach. This lady reminds me A Lot of my Grandma, my mom and my sister, just pleasant and beautiful seemingly inside and out, but don't get it twisted, NOT A PUSH OVER

I’m not black but I think there are two basic types of ex-pats. Those who flock to the expat communities/bars etc and those particular individuals who seek to immerse themselves in the new society and experience. So, for certain individuals when they see people who look like they do or remind them of home they shy away because they don’t want to get caught up in the whole lifestyle of referencing everything to back home. Most likely the same people,if they were back home, would be cool with everybody as usual.

I'm sure they want to say hey but they probably dont have it in them. Its exactly like that in europe and ive received just as much negative attention from black people as the white people. @@EAprima it's hard to tell because you see black women from so many different walks of life, it could be for many reasons. I lived in a touristy part of Tokyo so a lot of the black women I saw were tourists and so maybe that was one reason why. They didn't feel the need to be open to me because they haven't been here long enough to feel isolated or miss seeing people that look like them.
Also it could be that they don't want to make a big deal out of it when they're with their non-black friends.

    1) They don't want to be associated with the US miitary. The US forces somewhat frowend upon, due to the troubles (crime, noise, cultural ignorance) their presence causes.
