those shovels are still very popular in small scale mines. The instruction I got in using one was "don't lean front" It was very good advice, but either way an operator will only do it once

Surprisingly, it's not very much further than Sid. The massive chain drive mechanism seems to be very inefficient - it can't coast like Sid can. Overall I doubt it has even twice the range,
Rob Dickinson have you done any work on rebuilding the chain drive on it? It's probably been worked to death when it was actually in service and I'm betting there are some issues that if fixed could improve it's efficiency. Even grinding out any dings & flat spots on the wheels can help as they would add resistance and cause more energy to be needed to overcome said resistance.
Well, one hopes that part of the renovation work would have included at least replacing the chain, and maybe the sprockets if possible. Standard maintenance on any chain drive vehicle (though unless it was very badly corroded, lacking in lubrication, or over engineered and far heavier than it actually needs to be, I wouldn't think it would contribute much to drag; the bigger issue is it developing excess slack which can lead to very snatchy take up of drive and create an increased risk of the chain snapping). Though of course getting the right size chain might be a bit of a game these days, and replacement sprockets would almost certainly have to be custom machined at a suitable workshop, so it may be a slow and expensive process during which you'd just have to put up with the existing setup.

No, a tunnel brings all sorts of regulatory issues. It's a short line to demonstrate how a rocker shovel would actually work underground - the lack of a roof allows observation. What may not be clear is that there is a sharp 90 degree curve from the crossing (hence the tipper derailment) and it then parallels the running line. It can't go more than a few metres further as that's as far as our land goes. There is nothing to stop us starting another 'cutting' elsewhere of course.
Rob Dickinson that makes sense you down want to do that and your land does not allow it. I also know what happened to tunnels like that when you make them. They ether rot out or fill up with toxic gas. Rather safe than sorry.

I don't see anyone describing it as a railroad, it's what's know as a railway, a vehicle that runs on rails, I see rails I see a vehicle, so I think it can easily be described as a railway, granted it's not much of one, but it is a museum piece.
I'm sure it would, but who is going to supply one and pay to get it restored? I think there are two active steam shovels in the UK and they cost a small fortune to get working...
We have one just 10 minutes from my home here in Ohio! He mainly runs it on compressed air also these days,mostly for safety and maintenance reasons. It was built by Peerless in 1915 if I am not mistaken, he has the bottom drop scoop shovel,clam shell bucket,and a block and tackle hook,all in good working order. The guy runs a small machine shop, and collects old machinery, he uses the steam crane to unload his machines from the trucks when they get shipped in. He also has a very nice live steam railroad in his yard, and a operational live steam machine shop in his shop basement, which is very impressive, it's all operated by a main boiler which drives a over head shaft that all the machines have drive belts attached too, quite the collection!
Wonderful, and the excavator is just fantastic. Thank you for saving and taking care of this old stuff. Also thanks a lot for taping and sharing.
Very cool. I especially liked seeing the mucker (skip loader) in operation. I've seen them on static display before but never operating.

This is how some of the mines were operated -- small narrow-gage railway and cars to move ore and debris (tailings).

These locos were only used where there was a very high fire risk as in a coal mine. Any form of electricity has a risk of sparks.

Generally not except for the workers for safety reasons.

These were prior to the skid steer being developed and some mines are not wide enough for a skid steer.
