DEFINITELY TRUE! Probably in the 50 to 60 range over the years..big snow lover and add Stephen King to that and it's heaven! Leaves so much to think about, the difficulty of the decision, how poor Mike was alone in his opinion to stand against Linoge in one voice and say NO. For the most part, the town was full of "not so good" folks with checkered pasts and THEIR DECISION was the one that prevailed, not the good hearted, God fearing, least sinning Constable Anderson. I wonder what an alternate ending looks like if the town DOES stand against him? Our assumption would be that his power is negated when one voice trusting in God tells him GET THE FUCK OUT & WE'RE KEEPING OUR KIDS! Great great story by the master himself

It would have been an emmy since this was a tv mini series, but he was perfect, he wasn't pure evil like "Randall Flagg", he truly fears mortality, its just his life is longer than the normal human. People could related to him from that perspective, but he was evil enough that we didnt totally sympathize with him

Both of these great American writers have stated in interviews that they read each other's work. I guess genius effects genius. But both these guys certainly write brilliant, three dimensional villains on their own.

I agree. I think it’s his best miniseries from the 90s: it’s got great acting, great cinematography and it’s bleak as hell. I think the rewatchability has to do with all those things, but also because of the setting and the general look of the film. The snowy, trapped on an island in Maine setting is appealing IMO. It also taps into the fear many of us with children all have, despite the actions of the townspeople. It’s just a well made, suspenseful and entertaining horror film from the master

One of my favorite Stephen King stories. It really rips the mask off people who everyone thinks are “perfect”, “normal” & who act like they have never done anything wrong. For a town, an entire town, to give up a child to a demon is mindblowing, a mob mentality in a time of crisis.
The oldest human emotion is fear…the oldest human fear is fear of the unknown. The town gave into that fear, & sacrificed a child to a demon. When they stand before God, what will they say…

The performances (especially Tim Daly and Colm Feore) are fantastic, and the story is so much more than horror, but instead a diabolical examination of what people will do to save themselves as opposed to others. I was teaching "Young Goodman Brown" recently, a classic Hawthorne story from 1835 in which a man goes for a walk in the forest and encounters the devil, who basically proceeds to tell him and show him that everyone he knows (wife included) is actually a vile, evil sinner and he was a fool for thinking otherwise. It scars Brown until he dies: he just can't see beyond the evil that people do and loses sight of the good they do as well. It made me think of this film, which I hadn't seen since it first aired. I used parts of it on my lessons and my students were riveted. It opened up all sorts of conversations, and we connected them to the story I was teaching. It was just great.

I know you commented 2 years ago but.. I loved what you said. It is great to have an English teacher do these kinds of things. I am currently reading a modern audiobook- tragic romance, White Knight by CD Reiss, that starts with teenagers in a forbidden first love, like Romeo and Juliet, and ends up like Wuthering Heights.I couldn’t make those literary comparisons if I hadn’t had great teachers that made learning the classics memorable for me, even 50 years later.
BTW you wouldn’t wanna use that Romance book as a reference, it’s too spicy in parts.

Reminded me of when a parent losses to a child to some trauma. That child changes in ways due to the experience that parents and others can't see or reach. The traumatized child becomes someone unknown or barely recognizable to them.
How often do families allow trauma to win because they are too afraid to figure out how to cope?
This remains an interesting movie. Everytime I see it, I realize some detail differently.

If you have ever been to Maine for any length time then you know this story can't be far off the mark. I once heard there is a legend of a man who came to New England back when it was a wilderness who wanted arcane power at all costs. It is said that he traveled to Maine with arcane objects brought from the old country and used it to rip a hole into another dimension. I imagine this to be his story and it gives me a chill. All I can say is, surround yourself with people like Mike Anderson because when push comes to shove, everyone else will side with the Devil.

I like how truly he is not physically a threat. The only person Andre Linoge actually physically confronted killing was the old lady at the beginning. But that in turn started the terror he meant to bring as he is a master of manipulation. He doesn't have the power to control things but feed into negatively what occurs naturally. Such as the storm and people's psyche: fears and emotions. Though he does harness the ability to manifest upon and manipulate kinetic energy and probably magnetic force as well. In contrast Michael Anderson wasn't just the purest character in the film but wasn't weak minded making him difficult to manipulate. Love watching this movie thanks for posting! 🍿👌

I can't say I'd use that exact term; but yeah, the 'cozy' part is totally apt for this movie (& I too had thought of it previously), I think of the scene with the old lady with her little cup of tea, and snow or rain have that effect, everyone together weathering the storm, etc. But I wouldn't isolate it to this movie alone. King seems to appreciate this dynamic in life. Some of his other movies definitely share this characteristic also. For me, some of his films are like comfort food laced with poison. Like the little old lady sitting relaxing with her cup of tea and then she gets her skull cracked.

Also, at the very end when robbie's wife goes out in the boat one morning and all they found was a yellow rain slicker and red boots (also from IT, what georgie is wearing in the beginning before pennywise gets him in the storm drain.) @@JAContes No, he wasn't. Notice at the end Molly Anderson told Linoge: 'you tricked us'. He replied: 'you tricked yourselves.' The attitude of the townspeople was 'it's ok as long as it's not MY kid'. Notice how they held Michael down when Linoge took his son.
Linoge was NOT omnipotent. The fact was, he had to frighten the townsfolk into giving him one of their children. He couldn't take the child, they had to give him to him. Anderson knew that, therefore if the townspeople had stood firm, and faced Linoge, with strength, courage and faith, they may very well have turned him away. But they lacked all three apart from Michael.

@@janesgems7 Well obviously if they knew he was not capable of making the entire town fall into the sea then they should of fought him, but that isn't the case. They say that they believe that he can do what he made them all see in the dream so they logically chose to give up one child for the safety of the rest. I don't see why this is even argued about...
