- The first plug in hybrid electric supercar on Fully Charged. Not sure if that's true but it sounds good, in fact if you like that sort of thing it sounds amazing.
Over 1,000 miles of driving, average of 52 mpg. A very fast, semi economical sports car.

Out of curiosity what is to stop someone from nicking your charging cable and leaving you stranded?
Simon McNair A common question. The cable locks in at both ends once you start charging. You would have to seriously damage the car and the charge point to remove the cable.
Someone once asked, 'what happens if some kid cuts the cable' to which, sadly, the only answer is they would be very seriously injured or killed.
Simon McNair Being that this car can also drive on gasoline, nobody would be stranded. They'd just end up getting worse gas mileage until they could recharge.

Simon McNair That is just the usual "irrational" fear that comes with new technology. For instance, what's to stop someone from letting the air out of your tires while parking with any car, nothing. Yet, it almost never happens. Unless you have a million dollar car or something you feel safe that no one will mess with it, and it works.
That being said, if the charging suddenly stops or you are fully charged, you get notified on your phone right away, so at worst you will only lose a couple of minutes worth of charging time.
Simon McNair Depends how keen they are to get electrocuted I suppose. Siphoning petrol is much easier and far safer. It just tastes a bit odd, that's all.

I like how Robert has a positive view towards each electrification for individual mobility and how he is not choosey to a certain brand or technology, except for the old and aging technologies of course. Every step companies are taking for sustainable mobility brings us closer to fully sustainable transportation.

This car would be awesome as an electric car. They can balance it amazingly and drivers get near-instant control responses. Beautiful sci-fi 'looking Car The i8.

Ok, I'm going to be THAT guy and pose the obvious question: Why would anybody get this over a Tesla Model S?
With the Tesla you get similar performance, more seats/storage, the option to use it as a daily driver, and no petrol bill. One of the biggest Tesla criticisms (its price) can't even be used as justification in this case.
People who buy an i8:
a) Really like the styling and simple must have it.
b) Really like BMW and will drive nothing else
c) Really like the simulated noise it makes
d) Some combination of a, b, or c
Now I'll admit, it is a very nice looking car and it makes a nice noise (real or not) but it's ridiculously expensive, ridiculously complex, and not worth all the hullabaloo surrounding it.
Mayhemm007 The Model S is not a supercar, it weights significantly more than a i8 and doesn't have the handling capabilities of the BMW... I wouldn't want to thrash the Model S around a racetrack. But I would agree that for every day use the Tesla is a better buy.

Though if it were me - I'd take the Model S and just hire a car on the odd occasion I need more range.

I like the Model S as a concept but to me it just looks like a Mazda 6, people are banging on about "Insane mode" but are you going to drive around in insane mode? I don't think so.
The I8 is a sharp handling sports car. The Tesla S is a very fast but also quite heavy sedan. They aren't really comparable. Also the fact the i8 is hybrid and you don't have to plug in unless you really want to makes them totally different concepts. Honestly if somebody is spending that much money on a car they can probably afford to own both.
I think its more likely BMW making an 'in between' car to entice existing customers to start the switch over.. Here Mr BMW lover... Try this... Oooh this is noice.... Well you will really like our next one coming soon...

Lithium ion batteries are not "extremely unfriendly to the environment", and will not be "disposed", but recycled. After a lithium battery is fully used up, all elements remain for reuse.
Yeah, it is cheaper to recycle than to mine for more.

How about putting the charger bit on the i8 in the centre of the bonnet, that sort out the charger cable stretching over your bonnet in some cases, the other improvement is combine the batteries with a Super-Capacitor to only do the actual faster charging bit by 30-45 seconds to charge your batteries to 100%, Yes !!!! Very Nice car BMW thank you, lets hope the other sad polluting car, truck, van manufacturers wake up and follow BMW's way very very soon!

You know what I just remembered, jogged by your intro part filling up? That guy who had an 'extra' fuel tank in the back seat of his car, and with his daughter inside, was caught by the cops, as the petrol leaked everywhere! Now, if he was doing that with batteries, er, I am not sure there's any danger unless he parks it in the full glare of the sun in Dubai or something?! And, I like your motor impressions - there's a guy does a great comedy sketch online, exactly this, his mate is waxing on about 'uprating' his car, and this guy says, no, I will just make the noises (dump valve sound as they pass girls on the pavement etc).

I would love the choice between:
- No noise
- Old electric locomotive with contactors and rheostat
- Chopper-regulated electric motor sound
- VFD electric motor sound
- TIE fighter sound :D
That would be fun but very soon as stupid as people using loudspeacker on their smartphone to play music.

That's why I included the "no sound" option. You know one of the benefits of having an electric car is that it is quiet, otherwise I would have bought a rock crushing machine and attached wheels to it.
Anyone who watched Top Gear and expected Clarkson to give an honest and informed review was probably not in the most competent state of mind. It's well known that Clarkson will always put his bias for or against a car in his review.
Well I don't know what cars are like in the UK, but here in Oz it displays my range in km to empty or litres remaining at the flick of a switch as well as displaying what we consider the normal empty to full gauge. The up side of my fossil fuel vehicle is that is fills in under a minute and then does 700km, and yes I have to pay for it but believe you me once every car is EV the price will go up at fast charging stations that fill to 85% in 20 minutes, even if it will still be cheaper than fossil fuel.
Last weekend I got in my car and drove 300km away from any real civilisation and spent 5 hours there doing work and then drove back and still didn't have to fill up, I'll probably be able to drive around town another 3-4 days before filling up.
Don't get me wrong, I'm pro EV, and will likely by one in 5-10 years time when we finally have sufficient rural charging stations to allow return trips to the wild brown yonder, but don't make it sound like there are no warts on the EV refuelling process and all warts on the fossil side.
For a start refuelling stations allow cars to drive either side of the bowser. Obviously this is because there isn't the money available yet to build functional recharging stations, but then given a too high price would drive a lot of people to simply filling up at home there may never be.

Hybrid sounds fancy, but really is an overcomplicated mish/mash mess. A car with: a petrol engine, a petrol tank, electric engine, batteries, charging tech, gears in between electric and petrol driving etc. etc. When does BMW take this, granted, beautifully looking car fully electric? (And then its got a dumb speaker simulating a petrol engine, yes for real)
looking back we all have to admit the i8 is a pointless car, sure it looks nice but for everyday use it is a nightmare, especially in car parks, someone will always park next to you so you can't get back into your car, the 1.5litre engine is really from a bmw superbike and is quite juicy, the range on Electric only is very poor and the car costs upwards of 80,000 (although i only paid 35000 second hand) i suppose that is just more proof that it doesn't hold its value, the i3 is a thoroughly better vehicle but the i8 looks better on the driveway.
bmw really need to make an all electric version to show how much they have improved their battery tech.

I bought a second hand I8 a week ago and the mpg on the screen when I bought it was 25mpg and I’m struggling to get it up, it is creeping up slowly but I was just wondering if you had any tips for me. You should have parked on the wrong side and stretched the petrol pump nozzle across the car. But I guess you don't have a Top Gear budget to absorb the cost of any scratches caused.
Also, couldn't Clarkson have just backed the car in. It really was a hype show with an agenda.

When I can afford an all electric vehicle I want recordings of YOU making engine and transmission noises, through a loudspeaker, outside the vehicle. Inside I want to be as quiet as a sailboat.

+Black Rage It's definitely not a supercar. It just brings a new concept to the table as being the first fuel efficient sports car (eating your cake and having it to). It's really cutting edge stuff and we all know the latest technologies cost an arm and a leg to purchase. But in the case of this vehicle you must throw in a human head.

Utterly pathetic having a sound generator in any car. If i had one in my skoda that made it sound like an Aventador, people would look at me with disdain and call me sad, and pathetic. And they would be right.
