-NZ is actually older then Australia, it was created in 1840 and became self governing in 1852. Australia was formed in 1901. However NZ only became a dominion in 1907 after Australia.
-Before the colonisation of NZ their was a brief Maori state knowen as "the United Tribes of New Zealand" witch existed between 1835/36 to 1840.
-The Maori gain the right to vote in 1879, long before the other dominions gave their natives rights. And they have been involved in NZ politics ever since.
-NZ is the first country in history to give womens the right to vote.

Currently I'm in New Zealand for my study. I am Dutch myself, but for the last year that I was here I really fell in love with the country. There are still so many things not mentioned in this video. So please! Make a second part!
One particular fact that I love that was not mentioned is as follows:
In old folklore of Asian countries (namely China) there is spoken of an event where the sky turned black and red for several days. This is actually a true story. It is now known that the cause of the black/red sky was the eruption of, as what we now call, Lake Taupo (pronounce as 'Toepaw', like the thingie dangeling on your feet and the foot of a dog). I guess you could actually see the North Island as one gigantic super volcano with Lake Taupo being its crater.
That's right it was in AD186 and it is the largest eruption in the world in the last 5000 years. dwarfing Vesuvius and Krakatoa.

It gets brought up a lot, with a lot of justification, but it isn't entirely due to that as there is a shed-load of opportunity to learn.
Back to the thread starter, there is also a lot of regional variations - heck, I know of one case where how the township's name was pronounced depended on which side of the river you were raised on.

@Anglia Alba finally someone who knows history...we wernt part of Australia as people think.. we were part of the NSW colony...we chose not to join the federation of Australia and become our own entity inside of the commonwealth (unfortunately western Australia wanted that too but was denied)
and yes altho the united tribes of maori similar to what scotland/ireland did pre english takover..were attempts to trade and work together...but as usual.. english empire tactics of deception screwed everyone white maori dosnt matter...its always one goal..power..
Forgot to mention nz was the first nation to let women vote...prob would have gone well with the fact they have the worlds youngest woman prime minister. Part 2 is needed to correct this haha

Just to clear something up. NZ was NOT the first nation to let women vote. It was the first nation that is still around, to have given women the vote. A very important distinction. The Corsican Republic in the 1700s is the first nation to have given women the vote.

I’m American and got a job offer in New Zealand so I’m watching a whole bunch a videos to learn about the country. Needless to say I’m impressed so far
Another few fun facts about New Zealand!
1. Our national tree is the Pohutukawa tree which is technically our Christmas tree (it blooms in summer and we have Christmas in summer!)
2. New Zealand led the revolution allowing women to vote
3. The first person to build or create air transport (a plane) was also a New Zealander
Also the difference between a milk cow and dairy cow is the way they are raised/ fed
Milk cows are grass fed so they retain more water which is essential for milk
Dairy cows are grass/hay and pellet fed so their milk is thicker which is used for cream, yoghurts or cheese as it holds its shape better than watery milk does
Great pronounciation for some of the words - a few Maori words were a good try but it’s the thought that counts! I live in the wonderful Taranaki which centres around mt egmont! Can’t wait for a part two!! Te aroha and kia kaha my friend!
I dont think you have your definition of a dairy cow and a milk cow, quite right, i could ( possibly wrong) be wrong, my thought was that we have X amount milk cows which we milk during the year whilst dairy cows are the ones we milk plus the ones we are rearing to be milked in a few years time. I might be wrong though, generally all dairy cows are feed on grass with added supplements such as hay/baelage and grains, the only places where animals are reared solely not on grass(eating it them selves straight from paddock) are feed lots where beef animals are reared(around the region where i live anyway)

I'm not a 'Kiwi', but I try to follow up on what I think is one of the most ideal countries in the world ! Here's an interesting fact I came across...that in 2003, the Dalai Llama visited NZ and when he was at the Castle Hill Basin north of Christchurch commented that it was the 'spiritual center of the universe' which I find to be an extraordinary statement !

I am German and did work and Travel in this amazing beautiful country and just fell so deeply in love that I gonna travel there again in december. I cant wait to be back there. It is breathtaking. The people are so welcoming, warm and more friendly than I ever expierienced elsewhere.

Please pronounce maori as 'moldy' not 'marry'.. ✌
You need to pronounce mow as in you are mowing your lawn not mao (which would rhyme with now). As a white new zealander my maori friends in school taught me to say moldy but quickly so you just touch on the d and slightly change it so its closer to a rolled R sound. hope this helps :)

Morris Anderson no, maori is pronounced like 'moldy' sounds.. I am a half cast, i have a maori dad and grandparents and thats how they pronounce it, unless they say te reo.. It pisses me off personally how non maori people pronounce maori place names like 'wok-a-tane' 😠 its 'whak-a-tane' and 'car-raugh' when its 'kar-weirdo', i know thats no how its spell kawearu but thats how it sounds when you you say it..
Depends what part of nz you're from; some iwi spell and pronounce it Màari, some Màori. The 'r' comes off sounding like a Scotish burr. Never sounded like 'moldy' to me. I pronounce it mah.or.ree, with no hard 'r' sound on the 'or', and the burr coming in on the 'ree'..
Depends on which part of the country you're from but I say Maori as in nah but with an M so Mah - or - ree, with the r in ree rolled

When I was living in USA, they'd rebuild 20 miles of the I80 interstate in a few months (including new bridges and all solid concrete with inch think [25mm] rebar in it)

Just a note, Lake Taupo (Pronounced Lake Tow paw] is the largest active volcano in New Zealand and one of the few super volcanoes in the world.

Mikee Taupo isn't a dormant volcano it erupted only 1800 years ago. To be considered dormant it must be inactive for over 10,000 years.

UNSC INFINITY You must have blinders on to say that. I lived in NZ for 34 years and can tell you the justice system there is incredibly corrupt - and it goes right to the heads of Government. The number of innocent people incarcerated is staggering!! It is an extremely difficult and extremely time consuming process to get justice if you are innocent.
I know someone there personally who has been in jail for over 20 years for a crime he had absolutely nothing to do with. He was set up by the police as a scapegoat to hide the real villains along with the drug dealing going on in the Marlborough Sounds. Poor guy is still in jail.

Hi, not sure if you read this but at 4:45 where you've flipped New Zealand upside down and say it looks like a boot, we actually have a native story in which the Māori people would believe New Zealand was actually this way around with the, now South Island, at the top which they said looks like a canoe and the, now North Island, would sit on the bottom and was said to look like a stingray. But then Europeans came, drew a map for the Māori people (as Māori was an oral language until Europeans arrived) and showed them it was actually the other way around. So for generations the Māori would say "I'm heading North to Christchurch" when actually Christchurch is in the South. So literally the Europeans flipped their world upside down! Just a little more information on New Zealand....
also P.S. a kiwi is slang for the people who live in New Zealand but a kiwi is also a flightless bird native to New Zealand. The fruit is called kiwi fruit... So when you say you want to eat a kiwi, you're technically saying you want to eat a bird native to New Zealand.

I am very proud to see views from others on NZ, it is very refreshing to hear a non biased internationall view. Everybody gets focused on their own situation and local issues and seeing comments from others outside our view is great. I think you commented that we get around 1/2 million visitors but Im pretty sure its a hell of a lot more than that, I have the feeling is more like our total population ie 4M, I could be wrong but one of our most pressing problems is how to support such a large influx of people. We will get it sorted and we really need people like your viewers to come here so please feel free and do make a 2nd video :)

If only the people in power of NZ would talk about what is not being said of the true history of NZ. The fact that there were people who were here many moons before the Maori.
Daniella: Are you referring to the strong evidence that the Chinese and Spanish may have been in NZ long before Maori? Wow, that would throw a spanner in the works if that could be proven.
There is a documentary on youtube I think its called Skeletons in the cupboard NZ history. Is what I am referring to. It just makes me wonder because some of the caves along the west coast from Port Waikato to Kawhia is known to have held ancient remains. That are not Maori.

Sad to see (but typical) a comments section full of people complaining about pronunciation - I am sure "TypicallyTypical" had the best of intentions but in reality = A Maori doesn't say the word 'Baguette' like a French man nor does and American say 'Maori' like a New zealander. *it's not a big deal, get over it* ... On the up side: Thank You FTD FACTS for not mentioning LOTR. A few home truths: 1. those scenic lakes are predominantly full of cyanobacteria and Escherichia coli. 2. only four million inhabitants yet we have thousands homeless, literally living on the streets. 3. the taxation system has all but eliminated a 'middle class' as the gap between 'The welfare state' poor and the rich has rapidly widened. - Tourism Board Photos are designed to look good, Reality is a different picture - as the NO TAG song says: "What a Great Country".

I LOVE LIVING IN NEW ZEALAND! I'd love for you guys to do a video about how we take care of our natural environment... we have SO many volunteer communities nationally that work together in re-establishing natural habitats, clean beaches, pest trapping and providing eco-tourism adventures. Tips like: You will NEVER find a rubbish bin in a national park except at the visitor's centre. We believe in "pack in, pack out" - essentially: Only leave footprints. E - Eh
I - E
O - Or
U - Ou/Ew
O - Oh

When I was at school, we were taught the following Maori pronunciation:
A - "ARE"
E - "AIR"
I - "EE" (as in sleep)
O - "OR"
U - ""UW" (no 'eee' sound in this, imagine saying eww without any 'eeeeee' sound at the front)
Generally speaking, any vowel marks the end of a syllable
WH - "F" (although SOME Maori tribes make it sound more like the 'wh' in when)
NG - Similar to the "NG" sound in SING
The younger generation tends to try harder to pronounce words than old farts like me.

The English came to colonise as they did to other lands. Most of the Cheifs couldnt understand English ,the same as the Colonists couldnt understand the Maori language. Signing a document is a "White" thing. The Treaty beween the Crown ( King of England at the time) and New Zealand Maori, is a unique document however in that no other Indigenous people have one.It has been used extensively in the last 10/15 years to return land to the Maori people that was illegally taken.

Completely butchering the maori names man 🤣 it’s easy to pronounce when you know how to say their vowels (a-ahh e-eh i-said like saying “e” o-oar but without the “r” sound and u- ooohhh.
Also, if that didn’t help, for starters you pronounce “maori” as mow-ree but almost as if you are going to roll the ‘r’ but not quite. And Mount Ruapehu is said as roo-uh-pay-who.
Real good video though! If you do a part two, maybe talk about the All Blacks (our national rugby team) as they are literally our pride and joy. You can also talk about pavlovas, pineapple lumps, L&P because it is LITERALLY THE GREATEST SOFT DRINK TO EXIST!!! If anyone who is planning to go to New Zealand sees this... GET L&P!!
Sadly there are some downsides to our country, society wise. This includes our drinking culture, domestic abuse rates, and obesity rate. We are ranked #3 in the world for obesity I think? But if you came here and saw us, many of us aren’t large haha.
I love New Zealand because it’s such a beautiful place, we have so many opportunities here and I always feel safe. There is no doubt in my mind that I feel comfortable to walk around alone at night as a female. I’m proud that as a country we are trying to sort out anything negative about us.
Another thing to probably mention is our stable economy! It’s great!
If you’re visiting during summer, I really recommend checking out Mount Maunganui as a place to visit because it has an amazing beach, plenty of shops and an amazing mountain to climb, which many locals climb to maintain fitness (it’s not too tall and not too much of a hike, maybe about 30minutes- an hour to reach the top depending on speed). Would recommend going up that mountain in the morning to watch the sunrise. Also check out the coromandel for summer as it is SO beautiful with so many beautiful bays and stuff but many areas can be quite quiet and remote.
In winter, I’d recommend going to somewhere in the South Island, like Dunedin or Queenstown!! Haven’t personally been there, as I’m from the north island, but a lot of my family has and it’s really amazing.
Oh and I should mention, geographically, we are right on the ring of fire (if you don’t know what that is, search it up, basically where a munch of tectonic plates meet) meaning that we have quite a few earthquakes. Sadly, there were a few major ones that ruined a lot of Christchurch, another amazing city, in 2012 if I’m correct. I’ve never heard of a tsunami here (a major one at least) but there have been numerous warnings. We don’t really get any major tornados here or anything but we’ve had our fair share of hurricanes (due to us being near the pacific islands I believe). Oh and us being on the ring of fire would be the reason for all the volcanoes.
New Zealand is also a great place for hunting! So if that’s what you’re into... come and hunt here!
The greatest thing about New Zealand is that we have NO snakes here!!!!! And like 2 poisonous spiders :) how great is that!?

I believe in the late 1800’s/19th Century we had a Tsunami that struck Island Bay, Red Rocks, Lyall Bay and Houghton Bay on the south of Wellington (Capital!)

Okay here's a crash course in Maori pronunciation for those who find it difficult:
Consonants: All the consonants are basically pronounced the same, except "WH" is either a 'f-' or 'w-' sound depending on where you're from.
Vowels: The vowels are the biggest thing that people tend to get wrong. They're real simply and people usually try too hard...
A: Ah (Short A)
E: Eh (Short E)
I: EE (Long E)
O: Or (Short O)
U: OO (Long O)
There are no weird exceptions to the rule like in English. "Ake" is said like "Ah- Keh". That's it.
If there are two vowels in a row, like "AE" then just pronounce them one after the other, so "Ah-Eh" or "Aye"
