The ancient poem is implied to be written by Cogita. And the poem talked about the aiding the ancient hero and losing friends to the passage of time. So Cogita might be immortal and ancestor of Volo and Cynthia

I thought the most popular theory was that Volo is a farther ancestor of BOTH Cynthia and Cogito. Since the way he dresses for the final battle and the way he talked sometimes made him seem like he traveled FORWARD in time, unlike the player who gets sent back in time.

I was thinking maybe more like Volo is from the future. Kinda like it's implied Sabi is from the future (similar to how Ingo was send from the present to the past, Volo seeks out going to the past from the future, and Sabi ends up in the past similarly to how Ingo does, but is from the future instead of from the present.)

When a character is so loved by not only the company but the fan base as well that she gets two past representations.
One is the intimidating trainer you have to face at the end, the other is the really helpful, insightful, yet mysterious character.

I mean, it was Arceus who sent back the player. And Celebi temporarily sent back the player of HG/SS to see the Giovanni say bye to Silver and battle him.
I mean, Arceus was the one to send the player back, while Ingo's amnesia matches with most Fallers, so he may have arrived via Ultra Wormhole.
Better question is 'why'.

@@connortg5 No, the player fell from the rift, and they're specifically differentiated from Ingo in that respect. When he first shows up, he refers to the player as the person who came from the sky, and the game continues with this, explictly stating, several times, that Ingo did not fall from the sky, but rather just appeared. Ingo himself states that he was "still standing in bafflement" when the Pearl Clan found him, showing he arrived standing up rather than dropping from somewhere, and he tells Volo he has "no cause" to believe the rift had anything to do with his arrival in Hisui or the loss of his memory.
Another theory I saw is that Volo is actually Cogita's ancestor sent to the "future" to Hisui. Some hints are how he's the only one that know of Giratina and Arceus, and his original clothing being a lot more "ancient" looking.

They’re definitely just related. I assume Volo is either the “black sheep” of the family or they’re from different sides of the family who don’t get along well.
Also, because of beni's battle just before the legendary encounter, we now know that wally is from a line of ninjas.

I always assumed volo was related to cogita, like a son, grandson or nephew, since he says that he has the blood of the ancient sinnoh people, of which cogita is the last "pure blooded" and the old verses imply that she has lived for hundreds of years (plus the fact that she allows you to have enamorus, her partner pokemon, knowing that once you die of old age, enamorus will return to her side)
That makes me wonder if she becomes Cynthia in the future, cause if she’s basically immortal what’s to say she didn’t change her identity to fit better in modern times.

Well actually Volo talks about waiting centuries to meet Arceus, so it’s obvious that there’s some time paradox shenanigans happening with him. So I’d say that Cogita is Cynthia’s distant relative from this era, then Volo is maybe her distant relative traveled from the past.
Edit: that could also be why there’s never any mention of a family relationship between the two. She would likely not know who Volo is with him being a distant relative traveled from the past, and he likely wouldn’t want to tell her out of fear that it may out his plan.

She seems like a relative who would invite herself to Cynthia's family reunions and no one knows exactly how she's related but she's obviously related somehow in resemblance and very polite so she can stay.
Volo would be the relative that they do know, but is on thin ice to being kicked out if he goes on about his arceus conspiracy one more time
This makes way more sense honestly. However, when I played PLA again, I somehow noticed how Cogita's dialogue makes her seem like someone coming from the future. It's a bit of a stretch I know but that's what I noticed.
Personally, I think Cogita and Volo are the other way around: Cogita is Cynthia’s ancestor from this time, while Volo is from another time. I’ve heard the theory that Volo, given his Greek-inspired clothes, is actually Cynthia’s ancestor from further in the past (like, from Antiquity). This also aligns with their mannerisms: Cogita is suspicious of Volo, specifically claiming that he acts differently from other people in Hisui, which would be weird to do if you yourself were trying to hide that you didn’t belong in this time period.
Also Volo is a worshipper of Giratina, who's been erased from history at the time of Hisui. AKA Volo was around before Giratina was forgotten and was the one who previously broke through time and space, causing The Darkest Day when he jumped forward with Giratina to escape prosecution by Arceus, Dialga, and Palkia.
But then the question is, what Pokémon sent him forwards in time? Why would Dialga, Arceus or Celebi want to send him back given his intentions?
I would like that idea, but he does express being angered at the fact that you get to be more of a chosen one than him by falling from the sky, and doesn't seem to have a cool origin story to bring up in comparison besides simply being a Hisui era traveller with a bit too much knowledge. I think that maybe he has that outfit as a historic re-enactment he made maybe, since he is kind of fanatical about pleasing arceus and that may have been a historic era where people were more connected (right down to his silly hairstyle to try mimic them)

oddly enough, all the theories of I've heard for who melli is related to, no one went to James, which honestly seems most accurate out of all of them. The only question being whether or not the games and anime exist in the same universe.

A lot of the known ancestors in PLA have vastly different personalities to their modern counterparts, and beyond that often share physical features. Melli shares similar facial features and has a similar hair colour to Penny (ignoring the obvious Red part that Penny likely dyed).
Always thought Toa Hua is Wikstroms ancestor, same eyebrows and mouth shape. And pretty sure Tsumugi, the guard that stands by the item storage box in Jubilife, is Jupiter’s ancestor
The man you approach to grow berries, crops and mints etc has the same colourings and headband that Gardenia has (grass gym leader).
Coin and Saturn are obvious, but I could also see Coin being Grimsley's ancestor as well, giving her general personality and voicelines being similar to Grimsley's

Honestly it's Volo. Volo is the time traveler and Cogita's ancestor. He wore ancient Greek god clothing, knew things only someone who lived in the past would know, and had access to time travel himself via Giratina ripping space time.

The old verses from pokemon legends arceus and the dialogues in the game imply that Cogita (and Volo) are both humans that were blessed/cursed by Arceus and became inmortals.
Also, due to Volo's craziness, his use of pokemon from a different dimension and his blonde hair I'd argue that Volo may be Lusamine's ancestor and with Cogita being Cynthia's ancestor.
Immortality being indirectly present in Lusamine's genes would explain why she looks so young despite being over 40 years old.
There's no such implication with Volo though.

The easier, but also just as much theory, answer to Cogita and Volo is that they're both ancestors of Cynthia.
Meaning that, even if they don't marry, or anything like that. It's the same way that you probably know two ancestors from a few hundred years ago, even if you don't by name, who have nothing to do with one another but you could pinpoint them within a few square miles of one another.
Clover (one of the Miss Fortune sisters) looks a lot like Candice, the Ice type gym leader in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum. And Arezu (the woman who opens a hair salon later in the game) resembles Commander Mars of Team Galactic.
It’s implied that Cogita wrote the Old Verse, though, so it’s possible that she’s an older relative, or even an ancestor, of Volo. In the Old Verse, it states that the author will “spend an eternity” in Hisui for the player to arrive, and other parts of the Old Verse seem to imply that, when they say “eternity,” they mean it quite literally, so the implication is that Cogita is very, very old and that something has extended her lifespan.
Theres no way, dog you have to have 2 ancestors per layer of a family tree, we gunna neglect the idea that those 2 are gunna make Cynthia’s family line
I just think they wanted Cynthia's ancestor to be the final trainer boss like she is in the diamond and pearl games but in the story it worked out as that also making Volo the villain, which was incredibly well written don't get me wrong, but Cogita is there to be more of a one to one with Cynthia personality wise which is shown nicely through her design. I think they decided to give her two ancestors not because of any paradoxes or hidden story, but because that's what worked best for such an important and well loved character. Cynthia's ancestor had to be important to the game and its story but also still be like Cynthia, so to counter balance Cynthia not being completely nuts like Volo is, the older ancestor Cogita who shares a lot of the calmer and graceful attributes with Cynthia was sort of needed, and it works quite nicely with her being a keeper of old legends and stories, really shows where Cynthia got her affinity and love for it. Volo does aswell, to a much more obsessive extent, but its clear that he got it from Cogita who he's probably related to.

My theory is that Cogita is Cynthia’s current ancestor, and Volo is Cynthia’s ancestor from even longer time ago than PLA. It is hinted at in Volo’s dialogue during the final fight

I think it was already theorized for Laventon to be Leon and Hop's ancestor. Cause the Indian background that can be associated with the characters. And Laventon having the Raichu Indian elephant entry retconned to Copperajah from his homeland. Since Copperajah is from an Indian inspired region.
It was actually Clavell that mentioned filling out the dex with pen & paper, not Jacq. I’ve actually seen connections made to Laventon being Hop & Leon’s ancestor while Jacq is a descendant of Adaman (though the ladder is very loose)

Volo is from earlier In time and is a time traveler himself. Cogita and Volo are both ancestors of Cynthia. Just from different times and why he found Cogita in the first place.
To this day Cynthia's team has got to be one of the most well balanced teams I've ever seen. Her Pokemon compliment each other so much.

Irida and May is my headcanon. Their hair and style is similar and grey eyes (May) are just blue eyes (Irida) with even less melanin and can be a possibility down the family tree line in terms of genes. Now thanks to the Scarlet and Violet dlc released Adaman and Perrin are pretty obvious too
I think Cogita actually implies that despite the resemblance, Cynthia might not be directly related to either Cogita or Volo. The three actually all resemble the lake trio, with Cynthia being mesprit, Cogita Uxie, and Volo finally with Azelf.

Edit: I think both Cogita and Volo are Cynthia's ancestors. In her bloodline's past there were powerful and fascinating people. It makes sense she'd obsess over history and wanting to know more-real life people do the same with genealogy.

Volo and Cogita are actually from the same bloodline, so it would mean that Cogita is also an ancestor to Cynthia. With the Diamond and Pearl Clans colonizing the Celestica bloodline in the past, Cogita and Volo are the last of them.

My theory is volo was sent to the future a while ago, so he's actually from the pokemon version of greek mythology and sent to hisui, so while cogita is the "modern ancestor" of Cynthia, Volo essentially is cogita's ancestor too. The whole thing about sinnoh blood and volo not having it is this sinnoh blood happened after his time (greece) when one of volo's descendants got with someone that began the bloodline
I’ve seen Volo is from the past, hence his more ancient attire at the end of the game, and he’s an ancestor of Cogita. So they’re both ancestors of Cynthia. That’s a theory I like to believe

Given clothes can also hint towards ancestry in this game I think Volo might be related to Lusamine, Lillie and Gladiolus. They both have an obsessive personality, both dress up as that obsession even styling their hair like Arceus/Pheramosa, them being related explains how she would know about Arceus given it wasn't common knowledge, and their outfits share very similar color schemes.
I'm looking forward to seeing more past counterparts in the next legends game, it's cool knowing more lore behind mysterious characters and characters with known family. I was looking forward to a Barry/Palmer ancestor for that reason but the fact that we didn't see one is lore too cause it means they're from somewhere else.
