    Any reason why a Wireless AC router will only show b/g/n speeds and no Wireless-AC. I have the Netgear Nighthawk X6 R7900. My laptop uses the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260 adapter, and my connection is showing a Wireless-N connection. I'm not sure if my iPhone 7+ is using N or AC.

    I'm running the same router and reticently increased my ISP speeds to 1.0Gb/s. I am receiving 1.0 through either-net plugged into the router but only receiving 440mb/s wireless and sitting within 1ft of the router with speeds rapidly decreasing with distance. I have spent the last 3 hours on the phone with Netgear and they have no idea. I've tested 5g channel 1 and 2 but the same result with the max speed set up 1300mb/s. I thought it may be the router so I purchased a newer three band gigabit nighthawk, same result. Any suggestions?

      It sounds like you need to do some troubleshooting . I would first troubleshoot the router. Does it need a firmware update or is the router not going bad or is the router able to handle higher speeds with numerous amounts of connected devices, etc.? Also I would troubleshoot the modem. Take the Ethernet cable from your modem and connect it to an Ethernet port on a Desktop or laptop and see what speeds your getting. These are starting points, your problem may be something entirely different. Good luck!

    • @rickytrevino8281
      @rickytrevino8281 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the same router, i had 300mbps but was only getting 60, heres how I fixed it.
      Step 1. Make sure the ethernet cable behind it that connects the router to the modem is cat5e or cat6 and that it is as short as you can get it. I recommend buying a new one too because sometimes they get bent and corroded over time.
      Step 2. Get a new coaxial cable (the screw cable that goes from the modem to the wall) those really tend to get bent and corroded over time on the inside even if the cable looks fine. When getting a new one make sure it is rg6 and as short as possible (as in dont get a 20ft cable if your modem is only 5ft away from the wall plug). If you can get an rg6 coaxial cable with quad shielding that will help alot too.
      Step 3. Go into the Nighthawks settings (its usually under 192.168.1.1) and click on the wireless tab on the left, under your first 5ghz connection theres a box that says "Smart Connect" enable that and connect to the 5ghz connection from now on unless on an old device or significantly far from the router.
      Step 4. Ensure that your modem and router are up to date. Also if your modem is bad I would suggest upgrading to one that has atleast DOCSIS 3.0 or 3.1 with as many channels as your new modem budget will allow. Arris or Netgear modems would be the better brands imo
      If you like I can send you links to the type of cables I would recommend. After that if its still not better it might be a problem with the providers servers or with the other coaxial cable that couldve been badly installed outside. But chances are it is most likely one of these factors. If you send me a copy of your modem and router error logs I might be able to pinpoint what it is

      @@rickytrevino8281 I notice everyone referring to cat 5 or cat 6. I use Cat 7 cables. Is there a reason why the cat 7 isn't mentioned (other than price). I use a R8000 (netgear). Dont really have any performance issues, just curious. Thanks in advance.

    • @rickytrevino8281
      @rickytrevino8281 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@boss350z5 Aside from price there's no real downsides to cat7 it's an all around superior cable. But you most likely won't see enormous improvements depending on your router/modem/network switch and it's ethernet ports compatibility with cat7 speeds.
      Cat6 is mainly brought up because it is the peak of what most modem/router/network switch ports will handle, because it is more plug-and-play whereas with cat7 you have to ground the cable, and because it is usually the highest level of cabling available locally without having to order online. But even if you have cat7 and your modem/router/network switch only supports up to cat6 speeds it is still a good upgrade due to its overkill shielding that will improve your SNR and make your network more reliable

    I have a problem with what some people have described as Faraday effect. I have an old house of plaster and lath walls. If you have any dealings with this type of construction, you know that you can be in the next room and not receive a signal.
    Three questions: 1. if I have both ethernet and wifi connected, will the computer choose which one has the more powerful/faster signal? 2. I have laid about 100 feet of Cat6 ethernet cable to a access point and connected to it that way and still have connectivity problems with the Wifi. I then added 8 port Gigabit Desktop switch and laid the remaining 50 feet to another desktop. What is the effective range of this type of cabling and is there something I can do to strengthen it. 3. Subscribed and like your channel. I know this has little in common with your vid but it is the same category. I'm sure I'm not the only one out there that is dealing with this problem of connectivity. Sign me, they built my home wifi unfriendly. lol.
