When I read a person's comment that he couldn't even remember what he had for lunch, I thought that might be true of a non-organist; but, when I realized it was you, James Flores, who wrote that comment, I thought wait a minute; you're a talented organist in your own right; ok, somebody's pulling my leg now; don't sell yourself short; instead of competing to be better than someone else, just do the best you can with the talent that you have.

Mr Ficarri, yours is one of the best performances on Mendelssohn's second organ sonata I have ever heard. You use the wonderful resources of that instrument to deliver a truly Romantic and musical rendition of that work.

I concur with Mr Zamora below. The von Beckerath organ is like a Mendelssohn dream, and Mr Ficarri loves every note in the very historic piece. This is the most dynamic recording of this powerful Sonata I have ever seen performed. Devoting all of the mind to the music in his memory makes the interpretation simply flow from deep inside, right out through this magnificent organ.

Daniel - Have seen you play 2 pieces. Both from memory - Praise to your old school (Proper school) teacher and to you) I can not understand why you have not posted ore of your works. Certainly you can see people are very pleased with what you have done. I see that the organ has that rather limited sequencer on it. The Euro builders never did learn too much about registration changes. They are used to having an army of registrants to do the work that any good US built organ would have. And much more convenient. Please do return to UT. You performances are very nice, wekk done and nicely registered. Even on a baroque instrument.

Thank you for your creative interpretation! I like it very much.
The dynamics i in the first movement is indicates by Mendelssohn forte, not fortissimo. Therefore I would like to recommend you to avoid the bright North-German-type mixtures. I tend to choose a Franck-like registration with foundations 16ft + 8ft on Great and foundations 8ft + oboe 8ft on the Swell, which I use for crescendo and decresendo as well in the Grave.
In the second movement you could make some echo effects in the solo voice.
And some "twinkle" on techniques: Try to keep your body as quiet as possible and your knees alwasy together in order to concentrate on your finger and pedal applications. In this case Marcel Dupré ans some more organ masters would be really delighted!

Anne Marsden Thomas - Britain's "guru" on pedal technique and author of a book on same - insists that one should not look at the pedals at all.
I beg to differ; when performing on a strange instrument, one needs to be sure that each important entry is securely placed. Most audiences prefer accuracy (with the occasional glance) over "correct" pedal etiquette if it comes at a cost of dozens of bosh shots. Just look at Horowitz and other pianists, who visually check their hands while playing.
In short, there is a happy medium, and one should not glance too often at one's feet - or even give the impression that one is doing so ...!

Its a wonderful performance an every note is perfect but you must use other stops for this music, it is romance, you have 1000 of 8' an no 2' or great mixtures. In the grave you can a little bit more legato. Have fun on organ and play it great with fund in your heart!

Daniel! You make No 2 as respectable as the other five. I mean: if you follow lockstep and entrenched practice, aka:
    1) Do what teach says and play this on freshman recital. The good professor JJ Keeler (RIP, miss him bad) thinks of this Mendelssohn like we think of the 8 Little P&F of Bach. Great introi to Reger and the entire French symphonic tradition. But this was the first and last time it'd be on any future recital program.
    2) Movement 3 becomes "postlude in a pinch" twice a year in present and future service playing. The other 3 maybe for service prelude none of these ever quite goes over in that context. Too long for offertory.
    You get the idea.
But NO. Mendelssohn had some higher level, nuanced emotions to convey in #2. Yes! Epic drive in the fugue towards full triumph over any Monday or Winter "blues." Suggestion for even a smaller 2m v. Becherath: begin fugue on every 8' flue coupled to Great. Throw in a 4'' flute or 2. Also 2' flute if it doesn't stand out above the rest. Gr+Sw/Ped. Ped, Both princ and stopped flue 16 + 2-3 more 8'(+4'?) for independence.Epic cantabile and breeeethe! Throw on Oboe and or Krummhorn at right place for section 2. (They go into bass line as well. For section 3 throw in mixtures except the cymbalizing ones. Maybe also Trompete 8...or withhold for later. You get the idea. And may be you agree with the reasoning. If not, orgsn talk is the best, non? You are an 'extra' player. Something. above and beyond is happening among under 30's who submitted to the training to learn shocking a.h. organ technique. No way around that basic stuff. Am wishing you wildest dreams come true with our instrument. One already did with the access you got to this landmark instrument by a first-rate builder. An instrument "for the books" as long as Earth stands. We pray and trust!

LOOK at the finger on that kid. He could play Franck easily. Well done. Very nice use of an antique organs. Funny, it has pistons but no crescendo. It is a 4 manual organ but has only one expressive division. Too bad the builder didn't know what he was doing. But I suppose they important an old Swedish or Danish organ from some church that was closing. The case looks like one of those cheap modenr cases - no character. Too bad they didn't keep the original 1650 case. He plays a little like Gert van Heff. Must be a really old rogan it has mechanical coupling. Daniel is a very good player. No music - that is the sign of an excellent performer.. Nicely done, young fellow.

This von Beckerath organ dates form the 1960s and was deliberately constructed with only one enclosed division. The organ was recently refurbished by Taylor and Boody organs of Staunton, VA, and they had to replace the bottom 4 notes of the 32' principal because of sag and metal fatigues. The bottoms of theses four notes are now planters at their workshop in Staunton. By the way check out the great Romantic organs of France and discover that they often only had one enclosed division.

Awfully critical and scary that as an organ builder, you don’t know this organ. Beckerath was one of the greatest organ builders of the 20th century. He considered this one his Magnum Opus. When built it was all mechanical but was updated for ease of use.

Interesting that organ has electric pull downs. The bouncing keys on the coupled manuals are a dead give-away. So much for these tracker purists and all the BS about touch.

Beckerath was considered one of the best organ builders of the 20th Century. The chamades were out of tune, common for Reed pipes
