    1765 was a good year for the UK to discover more of the new world, because they won the battle of the plains of Abraham in 1763, giving them control of North America.
    Maybe You can do a Mini War if Oversimplified ever does a video about British defeating the French in North America.

    I remember this war. I ended up feeling sorry for the young conscripted Argentinian soldiers.
    To be faced with an army of grizzly, well trained, experienced and pissed off lunatics must have been terrifying.
    The SAS turned up with dirt bikes with machine guns fixed to them.
    I would have shit myself.

    I think that their Mini Wars videos are some of Oversimplified's best work...I wish that they had continued the Mini Wars series.
    But even though it is pretty obvious that Oversimplified would not include more details on how the US assisted the UK during the Falklands war, some of the stuff that they left out involving the US is pretty interesting.
    For instance, Oversimplified mentions the US gave the Brits weapons...the US actually gave the UK the newest model of the Sidewinder missile which the UK had actually already purchased. The British were already slated to be the first export customer for the brand new AIM-9L all aspect heat seeker, but deliveries were not going to happen for months, so the US secretly provided the UK with their missiles early by sending them some from the US' own supply.
    Another interesting detail is that the US Navy was prepping one of their own Amphibious Assault ships for Britain to use as an aircraft carrier if one of their own carriers was sunk. The USS Guam was designed to launch and support helicopters and had a full flight deck and a large hangar, so the British would have used it to support their Sea Harrier jets as well as helicopters. Fortunately, the Brits did not lose any of their carriers, but if things had gone poorly the US was prepared to step up even more. ✌

    I was young at the time but still remember England being very divided on the war.

    • @iankinver1170
      @iankinver1170 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i don't remember the country being divided about whether we should have fought the war. whether it should have been allowed to happen was a different issue. it really was only the spineless left who thought we should give in to such naked aggression. it's a good illustration however, of what happens when you allow yourself to be seen as militarily weak.

  • @Denis-Maldonado

    Hi, Argentinean here, the war was caused by an US-sponsored military dictatorship, most people didn't want war, only the military government zealots which were a minority.
    I think my country doesn't have any right to claim ownership over the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands like they did from 1904 onwards, but we firmly believe the Malvinas/Falklands Islands were Spanish after they bought it from the French, who were the original colonists, not the British who came a year later.
    The Spaniard government recognized our ownership of the island as inheritance after independence (uti possedetis iure) from the colonial days (just as the UK recognized the Midwest as US territory after losing the usa war of independence even if it wasn't part of the 13 colonies territory). The UK then in 1833 kick out the Argentinean garrison to "retake" the islands, as they see em as theirs; but for us the history is like i said before France (Sold it) > Spain (Lost it during our war of independence) > Argentina (uti possedetis iure recognized by Spain).
    The islanders right now are the descendants of the British implanted population of 1833, so of course they will vote in British favor, it would not be the same if the original Spaniards, or the 1833 Malvinas province Argentineans voted the same referendum.
    It's funny that most of the world its against Russia because they annexed Crimea after a similar referendum, with a demographic of Russians living for generations decide to be Russians instead of Ukrainian. Just as the British islanders decide to be British after taking the islands and living for generations.

      Hi, falkland islander here. The Argentine expulsion is a myth btw. But also if we are "all" descendents of colonists why did the Chileans, phillipenos and even some Argentines vote to stay british 🤔

    • @strongest32
      @strongest32 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Angel_423 Economic reasons probably, argentina is a 3rd world country at the end of the day and a very volatile one. Geographically and historically speaking the island are argentine, it's a pity that the brittish took them by force and now the islanders situation promotes the idea to stay in brittish hands. If we speak only in peace terms they don't need those islands.. they are a 1st world country and the islands doesn't produce anything of value to them. they want the island only for logistic reasons, to have a base in the south atlantic just in case they need to movilize to that zone (because they are far away) for more war in the future or transport, maybe to gain more territory in the future in the antartic, who knows..

    • @Angel_423
      @Angel_423 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@strongest32 no, they didn't have a base here until argentina attacked. Before we had 60 or so marines. Because of Argentinas invasion they built a base to protect us lol. If the UK doesn't need us neither does Argentina. Their country will still fail if they had us. Infact it would be worse because they would have no distraction from their failing economy and horrible government 😁

      The only official language of the Falkland Islands is English, and this is spoken by everyone on a day-to-day basis. Spanish is spoken by 10% of the population, a significant minority. Most of the Spanish speakers are immigrants, foreign workers, and expats, predominantly from Chile.
