Did you notice that I'm uploading videos more often? I'm also spending more time at home, and it gives me more time to make videos. So, that's my "lemonade".
And you can make your "lemonade" too! If you want to learn Japanese with me, I can send you some Japanese lessons where I teach you the kind of Japanese that Japanese people actually speak. Click here and subscribe bit.ly/35odWwn

Hey Yuta. I was supposed to go to Japan now, in April, for study reasons. They are still making Visas here in Brazil, but we havn't had any news from the Japanese Embassy if the boarders are going to close for Students with Study and Work Visa. Have you had any news about it? Could you help me with this info? I didn't find it anywhere either.

If you want to overwhelm yourself you can go to imabi.net and look at the lessons there and then open a Duolingo course at the same time.

As Lithuanian my school forces us learn languages like after 6th and 10th grade you have to choose the language you want to learn and only gives French German and Russian where I live because there are not enough teachers of other languages but maybe in capital you can also learn Japanese. Well if school lets me learn Japanese after 10th grade I will definitely choose it.

DO NOT WORRY ABOUT KANJI, jesus christ everyones making such a huge deal about it. Just focus on your kanas for now and then move into basic sentence structures. I recommend Japaneseammo as she introduces kanji with the structures.
Once you start to feel the need and relize for your self of why kanji is important start learning radicals.
Try and use japanese everyday in your day to day life like talking to your self about your day or to someone else, have fun and do not stress over the little things

I've been learning Japaneses for about a year and I can say that I made a little bit of progress. For example my vocabulary has increased and I'm starting to get the hang of identifying and pronouncing Hiragana characters. I've already immerse myself in Japanese media thorough anime, games, and pro-wrestling(NJPW). It has been a fun experience so far piecing together what I learn while immersing in Japanese media. I still have a long way to go and I believe anyone can learn a new language as long as they stay consistent.

I have to say that making friends is one of my biggest goals when learning japanese and hopefully travelling to Japan. To have the chance to meet new people and especially people from a different country with a different culture is in my opinion just a wonderful thing. And to exchange about the differences between one another is interesting as hell to me so I will use this time to make progress :D
Edit: One thing that I think is pretty useful too is to get a japanese keyboard input like I have with "Google Japanese Input" because you can check right away if you've read japanese things correct. And as a guy from germany I think it's pretty funny when I typed just the Katakana-symbol for "shi" in Google every single time the first search query was something german like "Stuttgart", "Schnitzel" or "Schalke".

Can't agree more on learning kana! It certainly is tough but totally worth it. As you said, using romaji will only be useful for people wanting to learn a few sentences to use while visiting Japan, but that's not learning the language.
Being able to read kana alone can help you find a ramen or soba restaurant in the street. And that's the first step to a good day!

You can learn hiragana and katakana in a day or two (if you have nothing else to do, and you're really diligent/enthusiastic). Of course, in the following couple weeks you have to reinforce that knowledge daily, otherwise you will forget it. But it is a big win for a beginner and motivates you tremendously.

I totally agree hiragana and katakana is where people should start. Watching anime will really help you with あいうえお pronunciation and you'll hear a lot of common vocabulary pronounced too. You can also be the only one in class who knows what 魔法使い is and your teacher will be like how tf do you even know that but you forget that 生 is used in 先生 but also 生まれ.

Hi Yuta. Thank you for the video (and all other videos). I have a Bachelor's degree in Chinese studies and my specialization is Chinese character etymology. A long time ago I did a Chinese character frequency and Chinese word frequency study of characters and words appearing in online news articles in the span of one month. I just wanted to point out one small thing. It's not criticism at all, just an observation, because I originally used the same slightly incorrect wording as you have: At 5:28 you said: "If you learn 20% of the words, you will understand 80% of daily conversations." This is not entirely correct. When you learn 20% of all words, you are able to recognize words which build up 80% of what people tell you, but not understand 80% of what is said. When you think about it, it is a big difference. You are not going to automatically understand 80% of what is said just because you know 20% of all words in Japanese. It will help a lot, but it will not give you such results. In case of Chinese this is much more prominent when you study the frequency of Chinese characters (Chinese characters in Chinese appearing in different words often have different meanings, so even if you know a certain character, you might not know the meaning of a lot of words it appears in, cutting your overall understanding by a lot), but it also relates to Chinese words or words in general: grammar, word combinations, collocations, lack of context etc. all influence understanding. Given the high frequency of words from the top 20% most frequently used words group, you'll see and hear words from this group seemingly everywhere, and this 'seemingly' roughly 80% of 'everywhere', but it doesn't mean you understand 80% of 'everywhere'. Sorry for choosing only a small detail of your video to talk about, my intention really wasn't to nitpick. I just remembered this particular thing from my study which I thought was just a small wording problem but turned out to be a much bigger issue. And... indeed vocabulary is power:)

I visited Japan last year in August, I visited Kyoto, mostly staying within the area around Kyoto Station, and going as far as I could on the subway without missing the train home to get back to my hotel.
I took a 2 week 'boot camp' on japanese language, in my home town, so I could point at things and say ”これ一つください” and asking if something came in Large, was about the extent of my ability. And still is, as personal reasons have interrupted my studies.
But while in kyoto I had a lovely, lengthly, broken conversation with an older woman and the store owner. They couldn't speak english too well, and I couldn't really speak japanese. But we managed to tell eachother our favourite foods, things we liked about eachothers countries, hobbies, and just generally have a pleasant conversation. So I can vouch for how enjoyable it is to try and learn, and use a language that you're not comfortable with.
Another fun moment I had, was on my last day. I bought some Sake to share with my classmate in our hotel room, but realized my bottle opener had broken. So armed with my overconfidence, and rudimentary japanese, I went downstairs to the bar, with my Sake, and attempted to explain 'It's my last day in japan, could you help me open this? My bottle opener broke.'
My probelm is, I don't know how to say bottle opener, and i definitely can't figure out more than one sentence. So I managed to mime that I needed help opening the bottle, while saying 'help me.' which I think i said in more of the connotation of 'save me.' since they started laughing. Which, then I followed with what I thought was 'It's my last day in japan.' but then I later realized I said, 'Japans final day has come.', they laughed nervously, and I learned belatedly to not improvise language too much while blushing in my hotel room realizing what I had actually said.

I'm having my first babysteps, but i can read hiragana now (like a preschooler tho, lol, gotta practice my fluency). I found out flashcards are the best way to learn these (in my case it took around 30 min ~ 1 hour of practice for 3 days). Don't learn all at once, but do it by chunks and adding more when you memorize them until you start having some trouble remembering the new kanas. If you get to that point, stop and try again next day. Still gotta learn katakana and how to write both kanas tho, but so far so good!
