Hi, I just got a couple of chalumaux (soprano and alto). I played clarinet years ago as my first instrument before I went on to bassoon. From what I can see in the video, some comments. First, get the reed wet in your mouth for a few seconds before attaching it to the instrument (one of the comments below implied that other reeds do not need to be moistened, which is NOT true! Never play on a dry reed. It can crack. Second, you said you have flutes, so I'm guessing you know how to support the air from your diaphram. If you don't support the air column, even if you manage to get a sound out, it will sound flabby and just really bad. Third, make sure you position the top of the reed really close to the top of the mouthpiece. If you don't it can take more air. Last, flutes (and recorders and ...Irish whistles) have nothing to provide any resistance to the air column. With all reed (single or double) instruments, overcoming the resistance of the reed to the air stream is what makes the reed vibrate and generate the sound. Good luck and let us know how you are doing.
Thank you so much for your helpful comment! ♥ After reading it I moistened the reed in my mouth before attaching it to the instrument, and it seems that this is the best way for me...a happy medium between not moisten the reed and let it soak in water. Somehow it also seems that I get a better sound when I do it this way... So, thanks a lot. :)
Thanks for your comment. ♥ Yes, the sound is really amazing, so soothing... so if you ever have the opportunity, order one! :) The only disadvantage is that it's very difficult to overblow. Many greetings to you!
Having JUST got a "clarineo", I very much identified with your struggles with the reed at the beginning. Hopefully you continued and prevailed. Every day I seem to add another note to my abilities: I think the muscle memory just needs a chance to settle in overnight.
Thank you for your comment. 🙂 So true... Often it needs just time and practice. Yes, I got muuuuch better, but I am still learning... 😄 Many greetings to you, and have fun with your new instrument! ♥️😍
My wife came back from town with one of those today. I had no luck getting a good sound. It was a used instrument so I had a bit of bad luck because of that. When I held the reed up to the light I could see I had a cracked reed. So I've ordered some reeds. Maybe I will have better luck next time I try. Keep up the practice. You are sounding so much better.👍
Oh, great that you've ordered some reeds, let me know how it goes! Meanwhile, this video is about one year old, and I have to say, reed instruments are not very easy to play. Wish you much joy with this instrument! I am playing it not very often at the moment.
I have a Xaphoon, which is also a similar type of instrument to the chalumeau, which I am afraid to try and learn, because of the noises it makes when I try and play it. I would disturb everybody in the house! You made excellent progress in just a few days, well done.
Thank you! :) Oh, a Xaphoon, great! I do see what you mean! 😅 Reed instruments are much louder than flutes, etc. So here it's the same, ha ha! Mostly I don't play it more than 40 minutes or so... especially on Sundays it's difficult. 😬 Hope that you'll find the opportunity to play it more often in the future, and if so, let me know how it's going! :) 🙋🙋🙋
Thank you. 🙏🙂 A good tip. At first I didn't know that soaking the reed will help, but then, after a few days of practicing and reading in the internet, I did, and it sounded much better. :) I would love to try an oboe one day 😄
Grins...danke dir. :) 🙋🙋🙋🌞🌞🌞

Hi! 🙂 No, it's definitely not like blowing into a recorder. It's more like a clarinet (the chalumeau has a clarinet mouthpiece) and yes, similar to the sax regarding to the blowing technique.

Good to know that others are facing a similar experience when starting with reed instruments! 😅🙏 Yes, recorders are easier to practice, and also a lot of fun... Lots of love, thanks for your comment! 🙂❤️
@@WoodwindSpirit I recommend to my customers the Vandooren B45LY and 56 Rue Lepic reeds. Though you want to find out what sort of mouthpieces the Tupian is made for. The above mentioned are boehm-cut, the Tupian could be german cut. In any way a good mouthpiece will improve sound and playability of the instrument a lot. Just to give an idea, a well made mouthpiece will cost around 100€ without ligature and reeds.

First of all you have to make the Reed wet. Let it soak. Then Play.
You’re a very honest person, thank you

You need to soak the reed. Now try playing an oboe if you really want exhaustion.

Does oboe really require much forces and air?
Soak in oil or vinegar?
Add some spices and ist quite delicious

If you like a higher pitched chalumeau I can recommend the "clarineau" in C. It sounds even more like a duduk. I like my "clarineau" very much.
Thank you very much, I will keep that in mind. :)
Did you soak the reed in water before playing?
At first no, but then, a few days later, yes, and it was easier to play then... 🙂 🙋🙋🙋

Could someone tell me how you blow it, please? Do you have to have a similar embouchure as when you play a sax., or do you just blow like a recorder?

@@WoodwindSpirit thank you, so you gently bite with your top teeth and cushion the bottom teeth with your lip?
you need to dampen the reed unlike oboe or double reeds. Its like my pocket sax which uses alto sax mouth peice or larinet.
