I am a drummer and drumming instructor. I have such respect for Mike Portnoy. He has amazing technique when he wants to exhibit it. Here he was giving the audience a good time at the concert. He's an excellent drummer. He has incredible independence, and he's a superb songwriter too. Just a very cool guy!
This is why he is missed. He was the heart of DT - charisma. He made people joining him on drums. He's not the best technical drummer but his drum solos made people cheer. He interacted with people while on scenario. Meanwhile...
Mike has the concept of what drumming is all about. FUN . Not only for himself but the fans out there who idolize him, like he idolized so many before him. Great drummer top 5 all time .
He is phenomenal. What fun! Remember that through a lot of the flash and kookiness with the audience members playing with him a little bit, Mike backs up the entertainment segment with spectacular, legitimate drumming and technique. He is tremendous.
He said he didn't do the solo i Tokyo because they had a strict time limit for the show there and he didn't want to sacrifice a song for it. This is footage from a different show where they could play as late as they wanted so he had time for an 11 minute drum solo. Besides most of that time was getting fans on stage and having a good time with them.
This what professional and being down to earth is really about, Give the real fan a chance to enjoy a night on stage! Love ya Mike, Great way to show your humble nature! God Bless brother!
well as a long time drummer myself I've never been a fan of technical type drummers like Portnoy .don't get me wrong I acknowledge his AMAZING skill .But I really loved how creative he went with this.picking people from the audience.much repsect...
His drum solos are lackluster, but I LOVE this concept of getting the audience involved somehow in the solo. That's what makes Portnoy great to me. There are so many other drummers that are better than he is (and he'll admit to that), but doing everything he possibly can to get the audience involved and having fun, and bridging a connection? That's something not a lot of people seem to do now.
+Vredesbyrd58 Mmm, maybe I agree with Michael. Try to compare this solo to other solos, eg DiCenso, Weckl, Minnemann, Bozzio, Mangini and many others. It's a classic metal solo, totally empty of tecnique in my opinion. Portnoy has a huge personality and I appreciate this, for me it's a great drummer... Portnoy was the drummer in the main soundtrack of my whole life eheh! I start to play drums (prog and fusion) when I was 4, 20 years ago, I think to know what I'm talking about... but I actually find his solos really boring, expressionless.
+Fog_Korn All of the drummers you listed are Jazz drummers with the exception of Mangini, who is (now) a prog metal drummer, but is classically trained. Mike is a straight up metal drummer with prog roots. You'd be surprised how many fans of Dream Theater prefer the metal aspects, and so what does that mean? in a live setting, Portnoy's gonna throw his usual quads and broken-triplet tom fills half because that's what he does best and half because that's what the audience likes... go watch any live recording of a drum solo by someone in the audience, and pay attention to when the crowd screams... yeah. Apply the same treatment to solos from these jazz drummers you mentioned.... the crowd doesn't usually get up and scream. why? Jazz drumming is intellectual as well a soulful. you're not gonna headbang to paraddiddles and 6 stroke rolls, are you? Sure they play some incredible, incredible things but I never laugh out of pure excitedness quite like I do with metal drummers. it's an entirely different energy
It’s always been a dream of mine to play along side Mike Portnoy. It’s sad that he is no longer apart of the Dream Theater family. I’ve been a drummer for almost thirty years. Mike Portnoy is still one of the greatest drummers of the last 25 years.
MP and Bill Brufford were the drummers who were the first to spark my interest in drumming. I love both Mike P & Mike M in DT. I appreciate Portnoy's creativity and Mangini's technical style.
This is why Portnoy is my preferred drummer of Dream Theater. Mangini is amazing and I love him. But Mike Portnoy is so much more than just an amazing drummer. He really gave Dream Theater a heart and soul. The writing he contributed to the band had such PERSONALITY. It was heavier. It was fun. It was wild! It was inspiring. Although the band seems to be happier and more balanced with Mangini and I can respect that, in terms of my personal taste, Portnoy was my favorite Dream Theater drummer. I no longer have wishes for him to be back, because I think that cheaper of both Dream Theater’s band Portnoy’s careers is over. But I continue to love his work now in all the other bands he is a part of.
iEso es apreciar al publico; a las personas que lo siguen y admiran! Muy buen video y la idea de hacer participar al publico de una manera u otra, esta excelente! Saludos.
Portnoy is probably my favorite musician thats not a member of Iron Maiden..... when they opened for Maiden right before he left DT at the Montreal show I was at.......they had a power failure during As I Am at the start....Mike stayed out and entertained the crowd for 10 minutes without power.... finishing by belting out Run to the Hills while 13K sang the lyrics..... PRICELESS !!!!
They're not dead. For people who live in Tokyo, it's sign of respect not to be loud or cheer while they're performing. Only when they're not playing so that they can 1.) hear the music and enjoy it 2.) respect the players by not distracting them or whatever. It's just Japanese culture.
The first DT song I ever heard was panic attack bc it was on rock band 2, and I listened to Octovarium, Metropolis part 2, (and images and words but I didn’t really like that) but Metropolis part 2 was amazing and I’ve heard 6 degrees of inner turbulence is a good album so I might listen to that one next
Yeah, you're probably right, dude. Some of us drum fans do get a bit precious at times. Hahaha I just don't dig on the drum gods....slumming it, in that way. Now the drum-jam he did with that guy on the radio....doing some Porcaro, talking Bill Bruford, showing some blinding chops on a small kit....that kind of slumming I can dig.
I'm not having a go or anything, but he has said in one of his DVDs that he doesn't see himself as a soloist of sorts, but he will give it a go from time to time. :)
There's nothing cooler than a band/musician that interacts with the crowd like this.
I did play with him live once....

this is the coolest thing I saw any drummer do.
This is why he is missed. He was the heart of DT - charisma. He made people joining him on drums. He's not the best technical drummer but his drum solos made people cheer. He interacted with people while on scenario. Meanwhile...
BUT NOW HE'S BACK !!! THIS DAY FINALLY APPENED !!!
Mike Portnoy always have time for his fans. He really makes you feel that you are part of the concert. Not just AT the concert
Mike has the concept of what drumming is all about. FUN . Not only for himself but the fans out there who idolize him, like he idolized so many before him. Great drummer top 5 all time .
Man, I can't even imagine what it would be like to play side by side with Mike portnoy
Dude yea, wpuld be awesome. Oh hey I was wondering, whats the song they start playin after the solo?
Caught in a Web I believe.
@@spadesderderiano8984 ong bro shit sounded gas boutta listen to that song
Portnoy is a total bro. I'd love to buy this guy a drink sometime in my life (if he hasn't gone 100% sober).
Masta Wong He doesn't drink anymore though xD
That moment when a the drum solo involves the drums, cymbals, the stage, a couple water bottles, an audience member or two, and a few stage lights
one word: Charisma
yawn
110%
He's very respectful of fans. Salute 👏
He is phenomenal. What fun! Remember that through a lot of the flash and kookiness with the audience members playing with him a little bit, Mike backs up the entertainment segment with spectacular, legitimate drumming and technique. He is tremendous.
This is a fantastic solo, perfect blend of technical chops, musicality and showmanship, I think this guy has a future in music
It would be such a dream to sit behind Mike Portnoys drum kit.
And this guy is back in the band!♥️
What Mangini can't beat form Portnoy was : That charisma, that character, that funny things, that enjoyable, that make anyone feel close to him.
mike portnoy
el mejor y mas grande baterista del mundo
siempre sera el mejor y estara incluido en dream theater
Wow, he did this drum solo on my birthday before i was even born! How thoughtful
Earlier: "I don't want to sacrifice a song for a drum solo"
Later: *11 minutes drums solo*

+iib ibrahim I play the drums since 2008. Play progressive metal too. Also have a band.
He said he didn't do the solo i Tokyo because they had a strict time limit for the show there and he didn't want to sacrifice a song for it. This is footage from a different show where they could play as late as they wanted so he had time for an 11 minute drum solo.

Mike Portnoy IS A BEAST and the more fun in this is that he let the chance to the people to have a 3 minutes of glory. Thumbs up you like Mike Portnoy
wow what a great guy i have never seen a drummer of his skill level allow the audience to come up and jam with him. That is like my life dream.
well as a long time drummer myself I've never been a fan of technical type drummers like Portnoy .don't get me wrong I acknowledge his AMAZING skill .But I really loved how creative he went with this.picking people from the audience.much repsect...

Neil's influence can be noted!
See that is a performer, one who interacts physically with his audience!
iEso es apreciar al publico; a las personas que lo siguen y admiran! Muy buen video y la idea de hacer participar al publico de una manera u otra, esta excelente! Saludos.
Brilliant! Wonderful solo, then bloody awesome audience engagement - a true entertainer!
Been watching Casiopea and had to follow up with MP. Such great musicians on the TH-cam!
Such precision and clarity in every stroke rather than just noisy shit!
6:34 Ladies and gentlemen, Andy Myung!!!
Matt Moves like... John Myung ?
its 2 am and i have work at 5am but im listening to this and turning the fuck up!!!!
Good Luck at your work !
Absolutely agreed. I said that about the last vid i watched of Portnoy playing solo. Sounds like one of my parctice / warm-up sessions.
9:40 the way he so smoothly goes into that chewy double bass is great.
What an awesome night that must have been for so many.
That was brilliant. The Freddie Mercury and Angus Young of Drummers!
This guy's a genius.
Haha I love how tight Mike, excuse me, Mike's drum tech, tightens the cymbals down! XD They barely move at all!
The sound of his snare is so orgasmic ... the best sounding drumkit ever, is MP's !
Love this, such a great drummer
MP and Neil Peart will always be the best drummer in my heart.
2:30 now i know where aku aku's music comes from. It's from Dream Theater !
Awesome drum solo. Looked like a lot of fun! Just letting you know, MP posted this on this official fan page.
Se va a mis favoritos.
Portnoy and The Rev, the 2 best drummers that ever lived
What music is all about. Thanks Mike.
Class act...grounded and tons of character..good for him..
You are right, he is killer! The song at the end is called "Caught in a Web" ;)
People don't like what they can't understand or comprehend. Portnoy is a breed all his own. Duplicating him is impossible
happy fuckin 50th birthday, mike!!
MP é concerteza o melhor baterista do mundo, meu Deus.
best drum solo I've ever seen
Anyone else noticed the Tenacious D shirt hes wearing?
He's Back!!!! 🤘👏
They're not dead. For people who live in Tokyo, it's sign of respect not to be loud or cheer while they're performing. Only when they're not playing so that they can 1.) hear the music and enjoy it 2.) respect the players by not distracting them or whatever. It's just Japanese culture.
Best drummer/guy ever
NO ONE can replace Mike. No one.
Except that second guy. He might
Excelente MIKE! YOU ARE THE MAN!
Quite young to be inducted. But he is that amazing
He is the best drummer in the earth ever.bravo uncle mike.
he's wearing a Tenacious D shirt!
Portnoy publicó tu video, felicitaciones, buen vídeo y nostálgico.
A superhuman, contrary to popular belief, is not someone who can fly or use superpowers. It is someone who is named Mike Portnoy
master of the groove 👍👍👍

The very best thing that might happen to me if Portnoy let me play along with him.
I'm not having a go or anything, but he has said in one of his DVDs that he doesn't see himself as a soloist of sorts, but he will give it a go from time to time. :)

very very entertaining, xD
