Best Pedal to BOOST a MESA BOOGIE | High-Gain Sound Comparison | Gear Corner

    How to get a really tight high gain sound? Even though some will say "just use an amp that's tight enough and leave the stupid pedals", most high gain players have a different opinion. Using an overdrive pedal in front of the amp is not only about the tightness. It's the initial attack and the CHUG. :) Let me know in the comments below, what you think about the sounds in the video.
    Enjoy Gear Corner!
    ** Why the "Anzeige" (=Ad) message? **
    According to german laws everyone has to mark their videos as advertisements as soon as there's a single "subject relevant" product, tag or link in it. Even if you didn't get paid for making that video. Sounds confusing and it really doesn't help the viewer to see which is a paid review and which isn't. But it's the law so whatever...

    Really great comparison Kris, but ultimately it just shows that the Mesa sounds already fantastic without any pedals. And (sad to say) that the pedals don't make much (if any) difference.

      The problem is that it seeks to boost the sound, people place the pedals in front of the amp, obviously the only thing they achieve is to alter the signal that enters the pre amp, the difference would be great if they used the effects loop, which is the power. of the amp, on the amp front the effects seem to be dead, the opposite of the amp power where the effects are felt in such a way that they even eat up the distortion channel, even from a triple rectifier. Not to mention that when you send them to the front the pedal loses: Color, Expression, Sustain, Gain.

      Its True! That's why I have always bought them. They sound great straight into the amp, no pedals. I use a Studio .22 and I try pedals with it all the time. It sounds best most of the time without anything, maybe a little reverb, but that sound is "baked" in and its always there as soon as you plug in!

    I was looking for a good boost pedal for my red stripe Mark III…..came across your video, immediately bought the Archer…..sounds AMAZING. It takes the amp’s tone and …..makes it better. It doesn’t color the tone, it actually enhances it. Awesome video! I’m also gonna get the Xotic clean boost.

    I have Matthews Effects Architect V2 (klon type), TS9, and a custom made overdrive pedal (MP Custom Fx), and i play Mesa Boogie Mark V, and usually i use one of these pedals to tighten second channel on my Mark V, which is my favorite channel, regardless of how awesome mark iv and iic+ modes are on the third channel. That being said, after watching this video, i am almost certain that i need to get that Xotic Super Clean Boost, that thing just sounds awesome, that's the wow factor for me, that boost, headroom and uuuumph effect, man i will need to buy one. On a side note, is the link in the description affiliate link, because if it is i will gladly use it to buy Xotic Super Clean Boost:) Great video Kris, your videos are perfect, and wish you all the best!

  • @PhilipJoyceMusician
    @PhilipJoyceMusician 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    They all sounds great. No surprise really going into a great Mesa amp.
    But to my ears. The OD-1 has a snarly mid thing that makes it sound different to the others. The Archer was like a smoother sounding TS had a nice sizzle.
    The Xotic clean boost sounded great on its own but I think it might not cut as well through a band or in a mix.
    The G2 seems like the ideal boost because you can really fine tune the EQ to taste and to suit your guitars.
    I would really have liked to hear you try an eq pedal along with these to get the same effect. An inverted V shape and boosted level on a eq pedal should give a very similar sound to a typical TS style Overdrive.
    Great video as usual Kris.

    I have a Mesa Mk. V and I’ve always struggled to find a boost that I like with it. I got a Jackson Golden Boy for Christmas and can’t wait to try it out. I have to say though, I really loved the Exotic Super Clean. That may be exactly what a Mesa needs, I mean I bought it because I love the sound so maybe just more of it is exactly what I’m looking for.

      I play through a 2x12 Roadster combo. I've tried a few pedals over the years, tube screamer 808 reissue, blues driver, and finally MXR's Precision Drive by Horizon Devices. That last one was the game changer, at least for a darker and muddier sounding amp like the Roadster. What really was the saving grace was adding a MXR 10 band EQ in the loop and the boost in front of the amp. Now even at bedroom volumes it chugs like crazy. You're amp already has EQ sliders so you may not need anything more than the classic V sweep and a good boost. Mesa's are some of the best and most frustrating amps i've played. You'll get some great tones but it might take 4 months to tweak it to perfection, or in my case 12+ years!

      You should try the JHS Prestige pedal!!! It sounds awesome though my Mesa Boogie Mark lll !!! It doesn't color the sound when used. It is kind of a boost or an Expressor. It only has one knob that I set at 10 o' clock to get a very nice boost!!!

    I thought the clean boost was awesome, worked great with every example you played. It's much like my SoloDallas The Schaffer Replica pedal, which is my always on boost pedal. I thought the other of pedals all sounded great, especially the tube screamer and the archer, rev was pretty good as well. The Boss, like you said, sucked out a lot of bass but could be useful in some instances. I find my tube screamer is good at that as well, brightens my humbucker guitars. My tube screamer is a ts9, I didn't know there was different models. Is there much of a difference between the ts9 and the 808?

    Hi. Thanks for the interesting showcase. I think the Mesa sounded best without any of the pedals. That’s a tasty amp for that style in this video. I've had the Archer for years, but it's off my boards. My base tone is transparent breakup, and I add a mid focused pedal cranked for solos. Sd1w or Green Rhino work for me. Archer is sweet stacked into a soft clip pedal, but not after it, so I can't get the volume lift I need for solos. Am I just not using it right Kris?

    Super Clean for the win. I'm not sure what Xotic does to get that 3D sound, but I run 2 of them. I run a TC Spark mini in loop as a solo volume boost. Super Clean is an always on pedal. I use a Super Sweet as my high gain overdrive. The super sweet replaced an OCD V1.7. I run these with a 94 Tremoverb Head.

    If you find a tube screamer too mid focused and/or fizzy, I highly recommend checking out the Wampler Clarksdale. It’s a tube screamer circuit with a mid and low end EQ added so you can sculpt your tone more. In addition, it has an added circuit that features more high and low, and is Iess compressed. I have it on my board as a tube screamer option and I love it. I don’t want to come across as pushing it but I can’t help but mention it when I hear someone feels a tube screamer is too mid focused.
    Oh also... a Pepers Dirty Tree is cool into a Mesa (particularly Rectifiers) if you really want a tighter metal sound.

    Hi Kris, wnat l hear is TS = more gain, ARCHER adds lows to TS sound, REVV has more 'roomsound' the BOSS adds more depth to the roomsound...if they go from 0->4...the super clean has a little flatter sound than the BOSS....through my tablet and blackstar stereo40V2. NICE EXPLORER btw! On the Gibson differences here are less audible...

    For the Mark series my favorite is the Ibanez TS-9. It's seems to be the one that kill the least the bass frequencies (between my own pedals). I love the Boss SD-1 for Dual Rectifier that have ton of bass but not with Mark amps. I doesn't like the maxon OD808 either with Mesa but love it with Marshall. The Mesa Grid Slammer is the only one that I can't find a purpose for any of my amps, I'm a bit disappointed for now.

    Honestly, with an amp like a Mesa/Boogie Mark series, any overdrive pedal is superfluous. You already have a massive amount of tone-shaping on tap in the amp, itself. But, if I were to pick any pedal to put in front of it, I’d go with a parametric eq, like the Tech21NYC Q\Strip. It’s not gain you really need, but eq shaping, with an amp like that.

Did you have the Archer on low gain (basically working as a clean boost)? I have also found the Analogman KoT works great with a distorted amp (I use it a lot with my Jubilee), probably because it is also full of fairy dust and elvish tears... ;-)

    Oh man great video, I'm trying to figure out how to tighten my Madamp a15 (diy 15watt american high gain with boost) toplay with a 7 string guitar. On its own it's great for regular tuning but on a seven with wide range bassy actives it gets flubby, tried a TS9 which makes it better but not there yet, and oddly enough an MT2 with the gain off does the job spectacularly, but gives it too much of an ice pick quality. At the moment I'm trying to decide on a rat, a precision (glorified TS), or a G3. Now you've gone and made me even more confused. :-D OD-1 could be the right answer But I dislike the quality of the grit it adds ... Help!!! :-D

    • @KrisBarocsi
      @KrisBarocsi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, the OD-1 (or even s current sd-1) could work, especially together with an eq pedal behind it. You could shape the tone with that to get rid of what bugs you. 🤷‍♂️ That’s what I‘d do I think.

    OD-1 wins. Now bring the BD-2 Blues Driver BD2 into the comparison and I think you're going to forget about the others. It pushes a "wider" set of frequencies than any of those pedals.

  • @stanislavmigra

    When I saw the Line-up, I was expecting hard decision between G2 and Archer. But I liked the Super Clean Xotic by far the best. It just adds the right sparklea and fairie dust on top of great sound.
    G2 sounded too Hifi to me, TS9 too chewy and compressed, OD-1 little bit dry (but very nasty in midrange, might sound great in a tight mix).
    And Archer, for some reason I dont like Archer in any video ever. I like Tumnus, Mjolnir, Centura, Ryra Klon, original Klon and many others ofthese, but Archer to me always sound, like sucking life out of the sound 🤷. I wish I like it, as Im huuge Jrad fan, but cant be helped.

    WHY..the amp does that all by itself...the only reason to use a gain boost with a Mark is if you are too lazy to switch channels (I own a Mark V 90 watt..Triaxis and used to own a Studio Pre...so I DO know what I am saying) (that being said I have a Clean boost TC spark and Tube Screamer type (Krank Krankshaft..the BEST tube screamer knockoff...tooo bad they dont make em anymore)..NEVER NEED TO USE THEM>>>but if I did, they sound amazing(I actually do use them on the Triaxis and that is for the cleaners modes)..ALL a mark really needs is an outboard EQ and you can get it to do anything you want!!!
