- For the 9th video of this mini series, I showed classically trained vocal performance majors JYJ's live performance of their song 'Heaven' at Tokyo Dome.

This series won't be updated as often as the 'Classical Musicians React to Kpop' series, but will hopefully cover some great live performances of KPOP groups/vocalists. I am only featuring KPOP vocalists on this series, hence why we haven't reacted to So Hyang yet. I may branch out in the future, but for now, I will only focus on featuring kpop vocalists.
I will be focusing on Immortal songs 2, Fantastic Duo, and Duet Song Festival idol performances that I personally am curious to see how my vocalist friends will react to & analyze vocal technique of.

As a fan of JYJ (even before the actual formation of JYJ), I firmly agree about Junsu's technique. He's never had perfect technique. He's a hell of an overall singer, but his technique has always needed work. Yoochun has had the greatest vocal glow up, but he needs the support of a group. What tripped me out the most is the constant comments about Jaejoong's 'musical theater' experience coming through. If that's not an example of manipulative thought, I don't know what is. His critiques would've probably been different had they not been told he was a theater actor. He's actually more of a rock singer stylistically. He can float around through several genres, but rock is his home.
I agree they can´t do an spontaneus critic, coz they have the prejudice of "musical actor " on, and the more fun is they confuse Jaejoong and Junsu, and I have to say, this is not the best "In Heaven live" for me, but I´m happy at less someone do a reaction to JYJ.
yep i think Jaejoong's voice has its own emotion and even quite unique compared to most of other Kpop singers

I just knew JYJ would be completely misrepresented here, especially Junsu. He's not straining his voice, he's been going at it for a decade and a half now doing non stop performances in his group and in theatre, you don't hear any wear on his voice. And he's not artificially making it higher like that, he literally sounds the same when he talks that's just how he's always been. He's also the absolute machine of pitch perfection compared to anyone else in K-Pop, hands down.
I know they're an older group but you're being ridiculously lazy and disrespectful by depending on some idiot on Twitter to tell you who's who/their backgrounds instead of taking 5 minutes on Wikipedia to check for yourself.

The power of human suggestion is strong. Not that Jaejoong isn't a strong vocalist, he really is, but hearing them talk about the musical theater quality to his voice when (personally) I feel Junsu has a richer tone and more musicality was interesting. JYJ are fantastic singers and they harmonize really well so it was nice to see the reactors pick up on some of those things.
I think it was less about the quality of their voices and more about their singing technique. Junsu definitely uses damaging technique and it's very visible here (what with the veins on his neck popping out so much, it's a sign he's pushing and straining). It doesn't mean he doesn't have a great tone or musicality.
Junsu's voice is not just damaging but his voice is already damaged. he damaged his vocal chords when he was a teenager and many thought he couldnt sing again. he persevered and developed his own technique to cope with it. his voice once was clear and pure but he ended up with super raspy and husky voice. it seems as if he's straining his neck muscles but thats how it has been for the last 14yrs since his debut. he's really not overly straining, this is just how he sings.

Junsu stans cant stand people liking or praising Jaejoong voice more..Junsu is a great singer but sometimes people simply prefer Jaejoong voice. Plus Jaejoong voice is more flexible too. He can sing pop, rock,ballad..even trot.

제엠Kpopfanboy Junsu is far away from being one of the best vocalist in kpop😂😂 anyone who said that it's either delusional or ignorant about vocal pedagogy & technique. There are a handful of male vocalists in kpop who's much better than him.

제엠Kpopfanboy you mean kpopvocalanalysis? That's where I got my backup too(apart from my own observation) & nowhere they said he's one of the best vocalist in kpop. Don't get me wrong he's pretty high on the list but he's not in top 10 best kpop male vocalists in that site, if you were to read & compare all of their analysis. His technique is great tho, just his low is really weak compared to the other kpop tenors & his upper register is all falsetto if I'm not wrong. His mix & intonation is the only one basically saved his singing.

um no it's Junsu, Jaejoong's the red head and Yoochun's the black hair.
7:37 I recall they were the ones who cited Jaejoong to be their fav and that they were not worried when he's singing, so I'd assume it should be meant for Junsu.
Anyway I kind of get their criticism for Junsu, it has always been quite commonly mentioned by professional reviews. I think a main reason why he sings like that is due to his history. Junsu was one of the oldest SM trainees, he was supposed to debut years before TVXQ did but suddenly puberty hit him hard with very drastic voice change (I heard his old tapes and his voice was really quite different) and he couldn't sing at all. Despite doctors'advice he kept pushing himself to sing which is probably why he picked up all those not-the-best technique because he was just desperate to get anything that made his voice work. But I feel like through doing musicals it's not as bad? Personally Junsu has always been my favourite performer in DBSK, he's absolutely captivating whenever he sings and he delivers the emotions most strongly in my opinion.
Jaejoong on the other hand I've always found him to be the most versatile singer, different from what the reactors mentioned I never quite heard a song that Jaejoong didn't suit. His voice was the voice that tied DBSK's harmonies together and I feel like he always finds some sort of balance in different songs. I like his rock-ballad songs best actually (while I like Junsu's quiet ballads best), especially when he performs it live, it just suits him so much!
[side track but tbvh when I first started to get into kpop I was mindlessly bragging about DBSK's vocals but now when I look back I feel like it was DBSK's harmonies thats the real magic for me, while SJ's vocal line might actually be more skilled vocalists idk, I used to snort when I see reviews rank Kyuhyun better than Junsu and Jaejoong but now I kind of admit it's true... In general I feel like SM's vocal coaches really know what they're doing and since JYJ left SM after 5 years while KRY stuck through for more than a decade so maybe that's why idk ok now I'm just blabbering psh ignore me]
Anyway if yall appreciated the harmonies of JYJ you should totally put DBSK's japanese lives Bolero / Love in the ice (and many others tbh but these two songs are most well-known) on the list, most of us would suggest their live version in Tokyo Dome but it may not be the best representation since for the DVD recording day Yoochun was down with a bad cold (and Changmin helped cover one of his part). Maybe Bolero from the Bigeast fanmeet and Love in the ice from their FIve in the black tour may be better.
I TOTALLY agree with you. Jaejoong was the lead vocalist of DBSK back in the day for a reason. His voice is like open to almost all genres. And definitely it is the harmonization of the members that makes DBSK the best, not really the vocal technique. Until now, i still can't find a better combination of voices that can be in charge of different ranges from low to high like DB5K.

I read your comment after posting mine but YES, I also always thought Junsu's singing style is because of what happened to his voice pre-debut. But I guess, because I've been a fan for so long, I'm no longer bothered by it. And I actually love it. Junsu's voice carries so much emotions that you can just overlook the imperfection of it.
I think it takes a lot more than one video to really present them as the great artist they are to new listeners. Mostly because of the constantly evolving style permeating KPOP right now and because they're versatility cannot be contained in just one performance.
AND YES TO JAEJOONG TYING UP THEIR VOICES TOGETHER DURING DB5K ERA, AND EVEN NOW IN JYJ. Probably why he earned his rightful spot in the center.
I don´t know why, but reading this makes me happy and sad in the same time. Sad because, I miss them so much, as a group of five, and it's real, they has the best harmonies ever, I only kind of think of EXO, thrying to do the same, and even when there are good, I can't put them in the same spot with DBSK. Maybe because I'm a fan for a very long time, and probably that distort my objetivity, but they were magic to me, and still today, and again, really miss them.
And the reason this makes me happy, it's because, it fill my heart know that theres people who still loves and suport them. It's dificult find cassiopeias, especially when KPOP is so popular, and theres so many groups. I don't know, i think that I write so many things, that maybe doesn't have seanse. But, I only want to say thank you haha, because a really fan would think the same.

To emphazied the greatest boy band in the past with best harmonization, I need to said past because 5 of them might never get a chance to stand on the stage as 5 again. I would suggest "Bolero" live performance in Tokyo Dome back in 2009. It was so overwhelming and emotional. Hope you will search for it and make a reaction 😀

I have waited a long time for them to react to a live performance with Junsu and I’m kinda sad they were criticizing him so much. He’s honestly one of the best kpop vocals out there.
I hope you can react to TVXQ's Bolero live at Tokyo Dome too, it's back when they still have 5 members and to me, that's the best live singing I've ever heard in Kpop since it's totally live, no autotune at all and they sing that song at the end of their concert, which is more than 1 hour long but they still sound very stable. I don't recommend it if you hear the MV because they sound much natural and better in live, at least in my opinion. Thank you for reacting to JYJ 💜
eunhae gives me life Because of a personal reason that I really like that version, since the combination of Bolero, Love in the ice, Wasurenaide and Heart, Mind and Soul from Tokyo Dome is really hit home for me :)) But yeah, maybe because I haven't listened to the version you talk about so I don't know, therefore for me, the Tokyo Dome still is the best :)) And anything live is way better, those MVs just don't do justice to their voice at all.

This performance isn't their best one when they do this song.The live performance picture on the thumbnail is the one you should've used .. Wow, I was not expecting this at all. They all basically gave the same critiques long time fans have been hearing about these 3's voices. Lol @ that mix up. I don't know that it mattered much. When this performance happened Junsu (white hair) had not done that much musical theatre yet. With regards to different shows not how many performances. I will say I'm still waiting for Junsu's bad technique to catch up with him. The tension and throwing himself backwards has been there from day 1 and its been 15 years. Though he definitely doesn't do it as much in his musicals.

I’m sorry but plz, in the future fact check before you start recording. It’s kinda rude cuz these guys are along w tvxq called the gods of kpop and you couldn’t even get their names right :/ I’m not mad more disappointed. You guys put hard work into learning dances but can’t even get names :( this is one of my fave groups and I was really looking forward to this video. But I don’t even know what to take from it because they only heard what you told them to hear. By that I mean, they were attributing jaejoong’s rock style to his ‘musical theatre background’ while completely ignoring it in junsu. Sorry for the rant. Couldn't get over the Jaejoong/Junsu confusion, although I know it was an honest mistake. Yoochun has the improved the most vocally from debut but no one really holds a candle to Junsu when it comes to live performances like that. I second all the calls for Bolero reactions... the BEST dbsk ballad. I also saw a call for Hot Times from SM the Ballad... Jonghyun RIP.

Well, I was really anticipating this reaction but it kind of sucked. Getting their names wrong is one thing but I feel like they complimented Jaejoong a lot more than Junsu because they assumed he was the guy that did musicals. Got yourself some favoritism there which is sad.
They're all amazing. Yoochun is indeed a rapper but he's improved so much in singing over the course of time. Junsu has always had a really unique voice but he improved even more through his musicals. Jaejoong's voice is honestly one of a kind. You can recognize it so easily once you've heard it. He's been singing in a ton of different genres too which to me, makes him the most well-rounded one in JYJ. But he mostly sticks to rock.
Anyway... This song is really important to Jaejoong so it's kind of sad to see you mess it all up. Please do some better research next time.

Hey Umu! Don't worry about the switch up with the names, there is a different performance of this song where Junsu has red hair and Jaejoong is blond so there may have been some confusion. It was really great to see vocalists react to this song and it really made me want to get their opinion on another amazing live performance by TVXQ which is the Tokyo Dome performance of Bolero. It is a very beautiful song and the Tokyo Dome performance is generally regarded as the best rendition of it that the five of them had ever done. I know there's a lot of people in the comments asking for reactions but I just wanted to bring this song to your attention!

I agree that Junsu has a great voice, but they are right that his vocal technique shown in the video isn’t the best. What I think they meant by vocal technique was that he isn’t singing in a way that will allow for his voice to last for a long time without eventually causing him throat/vocal chord issues. When you take basic vocal training they will tell you techniques to sing well and breathe properly while singing. Tilting your head back adds dramatics when singing but it does strain your voice because you are trying to hit a high note with less air which stresses your vocal chords more. The vocalist have probably taken many vocal training classes so they’ve had these rules ingrained in their heads, which is why they criticize his technique. Also seeing veins when singing, which Koreans really love to see in a singer, shows a strain in a person’s vocal chords which is something you don’t want. Having a bad technique doesn’t mean you don’t have a great voice, what it does mean is that it poor vocal technique can affect the longevity of his voice quality.

This is definitely not their best performance, and I think 100+ people said this already, but I think TVXQ (OT5)'s performances are a better representation of their actual skills. Bolero, Love in the Ice, Taxi, etc. But still, thanks for the reaction! :)

The thing about singing through the nose - guys we're from Europe so it's for us -not good technique-, but Asian vocalists sing through the nose and it's ok. There are differences in techniques and also in Language - the main part because of what vocal technique varies. >)

Actually I think that’s more performance thing. I remember I saw their rehearsal stage once, they just stood their, relaxing, and sang high notes easily. But when they sang in the real stage, they started to go backwards(xia) and bend over(jaejoong). It’s more like an acting so that they could deliver emotions better to huge amount of audiences. Also, they do this much often when they’re tired especially during a 2 or 3 hour concert.
Kinda agree what they said about junsu. Sometimes I worry about whether his condition is good to sing the high notes. But mostly he’s good and actually I think junsu is the most stable one in jyj or tvxq. One reason may be the tension he shows is more performance style. Another is that Junsu protect his voice very serious over years. He never drinks and smokes.
Personally, I love Jaejoong’s voice most. If you hear he sings rock and Japanese ballad (from tvxq or solo), you’ll find out how his voice suitable for every different type of song.

Honestly never had been more excited to see a reaction from you, since this is one of my all time favourite songs, groups/idols. Junsu being my favourite singer in general - but yikes to this.

First, thank you for reacting to JYJ! :) Second, totally understand that you mixed Jaejoong and Junsu, it is kinda both weird and interesting hearing what the reactors say about them.
And getting my two cents in it, Junsu's voice "straining" might be because he almost lost his voice before, like wayyyyy before, that he almost wasn't able to debut because his voice won't come out due to puberty. That's why he always looks like he's straining but if you've seen his bts of musicals where he worked with professional voice coaches you can see that he's actually using a technique. Well, according to the vocal coaches. So yeah.
Also much love to that guy who appreciated Yoochun's low register because he almost always gets drowned out and overlooked because of Junsu and Jaejoong's voice.

Always happy to see JYJ getting some recognition, although it's interesting hearing them contradict each other on some things.
Personally, Jaejoong has always been my favourite. From DB5K to solo tracks, his voice just pulls me in. Not to mention that he has the most diverse repertoire and his voice suits pretty much any genre.

Actually this is a live of 2013. Junsu now changed a lot about his technique. 5 years pass he still has wonderful voice and better technique.

Yes JYJ !!! Although i don't think this is their best performance, they convey the emotions and pain of this song really well. Now im off to bless my ears and listen to more of their lives esp. I also like Bolero, Love in the Ice and Tonight.
Funny thing is Xia's singing technique had been criticized for long during his trainee days in SM! I think it's about the singing habit, he's used to sing in that way and it comes out workable for Cassies!! To me, he's still a great singer and you will be touched by his live performance!! Just go watch it if there's a chance!!!
hithisiszoe I love junsu too, but this critique made me think. If he's singing more from his throat than diaphragm, it could easily wear out his vocals 😳. "Workable for cassies" is one thing, but making sure your voice lasts in the long term is another... Scary because I reallllllly like Junsu's voice for it's uniqueness..

Jaejoong really have a good voice and the best who knows to master his vocals. Too bad that the moderator mixed Jaejoong and Xia up, if not believe they have even greater applause to Jaejoong knowing he’s not the musical actor but got better skills that the real musical actor! 😂😂😂 I like the part they all appreciated the harmony among JYJ too, that’s really the treasure! I don’t mind too about Yuchun’s nasal singing - it gives him a special favour and distinction ppl knows that’s him singing. Not bad. But yes, Jaejoong definitely is my favourite!!!
