I think it goes back to rosemaling the folkart from Norway, but it's a folkart so has roots in lots of things Hollands canal barges and wooden clogg shoes, Russias nesting dolls, Polish eggs etc. I even met a Lady who Painted it in her teens on crockery & dinnerware who worked in a factory in stoke on trent , It also has very similiar strokes to calligraphy!!

Loved your video, and your relaxed style. It popped up on my feed because I’ve been searching canal art, roses and castles. I’ve got 2 milk churns I want to paint, and live near the Kennet & Avon canal. Problem is, (me too Shell!), I find the traditional ‘canal art’ too bright and busy! So I’m going to create my own toned down style - well that’s the plan. I can see it’s more difficult than you think! Look forward to watching your vid that follows this one. I’ve hit subscribe … I’ve got a camper and my little channel has been going for a few years, it remains a great hobby. I’m hoping my milk churn project will be a TWorld first! 🤗

Hi Guys Been watching you for a while and enjoy your stuff, but I do wish you numbered your vids as I have Canal Nights at home regular and I Log the good stuff for 'easy to find'. Bit of info, Phil Speight has been a very respected Traditional boat painter for many years in the canal World and when he was heavily involved with The Boat Museum at Ellsmere Port I did one of his weekend Rose And Castles courses in1994. Brilliant. Later he had Dadfords dock on the Stourbridge flight during which time his paint supplier ceased and with another paint manufacturer, designed his own. Thats what you have. Enjoy

@@ChrisandShell Thanks for your quick response regarding listing , must learn how to do that, am not very clever on the plastic technical box.I did 2 course weekends with 'Terence Canal Painter' at the Stoke Bruerne Museum, excellent too, have a look at his stuff on the plastic box as well.
