4 Month Update - Sapphire Gem Chickens

- Our Sapphire Gems are maturing! At 16 weeks, a couple of the girls are laying eggs already! Here is a quick video of how our girls are acting, eating and laying.

@@sean7058 Nope. That's a Gem. They have a few different looks and colors. We bought them as chicks and they were all together. I trust Hoover's Hatchery for their breeds.

I bought two sapphires last week and I am loving the sweetness they have shown. They are calmer than my Rhode Island Red breed. Thanks for the video, I am so excited to see them in their full feathers.
They have such differences in their feather colors. Absolutely beautiful! They are bold and easy going. I need to film a Breed Overview about the Gems and also the Reds. @TheOldSwedesFarm yea them reds are Fiesty even in this video it explains it all you see the red bullying the gem for nothing and they outside in open there just mean to the flock I made sure to not get any reds ..I have saphire gems black sex link and starlight green eggers ..I want some Orrington and Prarie blue
Bell..but in my opinion the saphire gems are overall my favorite beautiful real nice not flighty but they just don't like to be held that much and that's fine ..most chickens don't

I will be doing an updated Breed Overview about all our ladies. The Sapphire Gems are so adventurous, great layers but they've got a naughty streak. They get into things they shouldn't. Lately I've caught two of them breaking eggs and eating them. I'm working to cure that!
Glad they lay at 16 weeks
We had a couple Barred Plymouth Rocks lay at 16 weeks. Other than that, the Sapphires were the quickest to lay. Despite being a bit "naughty," they are great hens! Cheers!
I got a couple two week old chicks a few days ago. I picked these for their personality. I wanted a couple birds that are more friendly and human oriented. We don't intend to eat them or breed them. We do want good layers. One of them is developing Black feathers with white feathers underneath! Of course I get the odd ball of the bunch.
They can be a bit naughty but they produce really BIG eggs. Keep us posted how you enjoy them. Cheers Andi!

Sapphires were our first flock. So beautiful, intelligent, affectionate, trainable but independent and highly communicative. Lighter ones seem to be Great flyers! They should have pretty brown eyes and each one’s feathers different shades. Awesome free rangers. Were the large eggs doubles? Ours laid those. 🍳 🍳
Our Sapphires are good layers and a bunch of them produce XL eggs. All seem to be large, single yokes. You're right about flying. We've trimmed a few feathers on some to keep them out of gardens and other areas we don't want them in! Thanks for watching!

I bought this hen that was labeled as a mixed hen. I’m so happy to find out she is a sapphire gem. She’s such a pretty girl 😊

@@TheOldSwedesFarm 🤭 I'm a chicken hoarder. I have 90, plus two hens sitting, I stopped trying to keep them from being broody. I'm sure every one of those eggs will hatch! I've been wanting these for a long time. The last ones I ordered were splashes. I had to finally literally run them out of the chicken house the first time. Now, they run out as soon as the door opens!
@@grandmasfarmlife Isn't it funny how the different breeds act different?! Our Buff Orpington hens became very broody (except one). We sold them to others who will use them to be broody. The Sapphires are not broody and run out into the yard any chance they can! Take care!

The Gems lay some great eggs and they are quiet (not making a fuss like the Rhode Island Reds!). The Gems might be a great addition to your flock!

The Jems are beautiful. Full silver to almost completely black. The Rocks are beautiful too and their feathers are smooth as silk. All the birds are good looking (even some of the nasty Rhode Island Reds!).

I've got 4 of these and I cant wait to see the chicks they make with my blue, birchin maran rooster but mine are very passive and get picked on by my golden comets. My biggest sapphire egg this year was just over 100 grams and the biggest golden comet egg was 85 grams.
My girls are anything but passive! Caught another one in the garden yesterday! Two are laying really big eggs and a couple just started laying, so the eggs are smaller. It will be interesting to see what the chicks look like! Cheers!

Keep me updated on your hens. We've still got three of them. Two, over time, have become too dominant for the flock. They have gotten mean and pick on others. They are great foragers and free rangers but too dominant. I hope yours are a bit calmer. Keep us posted.

I just bought a used coop - it came with 2 SG's about 5 mo old already laying. They are my first chickens. We're getting 2 Easter Eggers this weekend & praying they get along. I know I want at least 2 more Sapphire Gems. They have such personality and great layers.
Keep the new hens separate from the older girls for several days, in case they are carrying disease, etc. Then introduce them and watch them closely. They will want to establish the pecking order and I suspect the Gems will be the Queens. Good luck with building your flock! Let us know how we can help!
@@TheOldSwedesFarm thank you! The Easter Eggers will be 8 weeks old, my Sapphires about 6-7 months old-ish. I plan to split my run to keep them separate to keep from eating each other's food (wish me luck on that). I hope the SG's don't pick on the EE's. Neither SG seems dominant with one another 🙏🤞 I just realized I'd planned to let them all sleep in the coop. Maybe I'll put the new kids in our large dog crate with a cover
I have one sapphire gem chicken and she gets in trouble all the time but I love her she is amazing the whole breed is amazing

Beautiful hens. She looks so much like my blue copper marans. Only difference is the copper hackles and wider body on the marans. I had some white australorps lay ostrich eggs for a while too, but eventually started laying normal eggs.
Some were laying huge eggs at the start. They then went to medium eggs. Now they are back to XL's. I'm sure they just need to move into their rhythm to be consistent. Ostrich eggs?! Some times I can't see how those large eggs come out of our little girls!
@@TheOldSwedesFarm Yes! I was so worried for them. The eggs were almost as wide as my hand. One of them did have an egg rupture internally from it, but luckily she was able to get back to health and still lays consistently two years later. I never did figure out why it happened, because none of my hatches since have done anything like that. It sounds like your sapphire gems are going to be some good layers though. I might have to add some to my blue feathered flock.. haha

I love my sapphire gems theyre like the popular mean girls though lol but sweet like hey I didn’t do anything. Mine stand up for themself and 1 is bullying and yes not afraid but super sweet and calm. So are there egg colors pinkish I thought mine was laying light brown but I’ve seen some pink and thinking who’s laying light pink eggs
You're right about being popular mean girls. I see that only around the nesting boxes. I have never seen any pink in any of the eggs from my ladies. Cheers from Minnesota!
We have 3 sapphire gems and one started laying 1 day before turning 5 months old, she has been laying small eggs and was wondering if yours did and also how long before they started laying full size? Love this breed
I believe our started laying somewhere between 4-5 months. They started small but quickly moved to larger eggs. We have a couple that are smaller and we were surprised that they would lay XL eggs so fast. A good breed but they can be naughty (fly over fences they aren't supposed to, break eggs, etc.).
They seem very vocal
Are they more so than the others?
Like any breed, there are some hens that are more talkative than others. Holly had a favorite, Sammy, who always liked to talk with us. These are bold hens but not a loud group. Hope this helps.

We got our chick from Hoovers, via a feed store near us. It is funny to watch that Red show her dominance! Now that we've had the Sapphires for a year, we'll be filming a Breed Overview video on the Gems. Great girls and great layers!
Tractor supply has them. You purchase online, free shipping. They get them from Hoovers hatchery. Through TS, you only have to buy 10 at a time. HH only sells 15, it looks like. I don't need that many!

If you're giving them a marketing YT vid, they will probably open doors for you! I really enjoy your content. I've watched several over the years. Some become boring. Yours never fails! Which ones are making most the noise in this video? I can't have all that chatter. Which ones are quiet that you have, and laying a large egg? My black Aust, columbian wyandotte, golden laced wyandotte, and black star are all fairly quiet, but I need a few more additions, but no medium eggs, and quiet. Looking at a few different breeds.
The girls making the most noise are the Rhode Island Reds. They are noisy and have attitude! The Sapphires and Buff Orpingtons are generally really quiet, as are the Plymouth Rocks. Of course, they all yell after laying an egg! Hope this helps.
@@TheOldSwedesFarm I ended up getting a sapphire gem, and she is so pretty. I was shocked how fast she started laying. I had not even put a nest box on their little coop yet - when I found the first 2 eggs, and they just started laying eggs in the box, right about 4 weeks like you said. They look like volcanic ash. Mine is quiet, and lean like you described. Very large eggs!

We're doing this to try out a few new breeds but the Gems will always be one of my favorites (along with the Barred Plymouth Rock). These girls are great with people and are great layers. Are they normally pretty noisy ? More interested because of urban living situation
To be honest, they are pretty quiet girls. They will make some noise when they lay an egg (don't they all?!). Otherwise, they are pretty quiet. I hope this helps! We're looking to get another 5-10 in the spring.

@@GudangkoiArwana I don't know of anything that will grow fast and be able to lay eggs in 60 days. There are meat chickens that will be ready to eat in 60 days (Cornish Cross, etc.). All our breeds took 16-18 weeks before they were ready to lay eggs.
My 6 month sapphire Plymouth rooster still has a juvenile crow. And isn't very big. Why?
Is it a cross between a Plymouth Rock and a Sapphire Gem? To be honest, we've never had any roosters, so I can only guess. I wonder if the cross breed has a slower maturation rate? Just a guess. For hens, our Sapphire Gems and Plymouth Rocks both started to lay around four months. I would assume the males would mature at the same rate. I don't know how to answer the question, if it is a cross breed.

@@judywhisenant1483 Are the hens a cross breed also? Let me know the breeds. If they are Sapphire Gems, they should be laying by six months. I have my girls at 16 weeks on Purina layer feed. Mine also free range. I have 40 this season and most are laying already at 4 months. My Rocks and Gems both laid at 4 months. Make sure they have lots of feed, water and ventilation. Mine spend a lot of time feeding and sitting in the shade during the hot times of day. Hope this helps Judy!

@@judywhisenant1483 I don't know then. I have no experience with the cross breed. Maybe find a way to contact your state college agriculture division. They might have a department for poultry and they could answer. If you've got the feed right, water, a cool area, etc., they should be laying (in my opinion). Let me know what you find. I bought 4 chicks in March, a naked neck, ancona, lavender wyandotte, and a sex linked sapphire gem. I was happy to know that at least one of my chicks was guaranteed to be female. Well... about 3 wks ago that gem began to crow! I have a rooster, and he is noisy and bossy. I am so disappointed.
I bet he is a big rooster too. I've never seen one but just assume he'd be large. We get our chicks direct from Hoover's Hatchery and we've never gotten a rooster. Sorry for your not having a hen. They are beautiful birds!
@@TheOldSwedesFarm He Is HUGE!!! And loud and bossy to his "haram". It's amazing to see how quickly he assumed the role of King of the Roost. He looks like a barred rock, wish I could send a pic. The place I purchased them from, ACE, is the second largest ACE in the country and they have a massive chick event in spring. The guy who helped me pick them out was very knowledgeable so I suspect that the "fault" lies in wherever they got their shipment from. I'm bummed that I don't have 4 hens but this Mr. Roo (we named "her" Sally but now he is Sully) is very entertaining. Oh well....😆
On second thought... he looks more gem than barred rock.
@@kathleenpira The Roo's will take over quickly. If it's a Barred Rock, it'll have black and white bars across it. Check out our Barred Rock vids. The Roo's are huge in the Rocks. Keep us posted.
