Are Toy Companies Greedy? Why is one Electro $25.00 and another $35.00 in the same year?

- Scott Toy Guru Neitlich explains how studios and toy companies work together to control when characters can be released and how much they cost consumers.
Wait can we get a follow-up about the stands thing? That legitimately took me by surprise 😂
What license? This guy guy isn't even Jamie Foxx. It's a random guy.
Can you do a video on why figure stands are expensive?
Especially when there's a few of them out there that feel so cheaply made.
I would have thought it was obvious why movie character figures would be more expensive that comic book figures....licencing must be a factor
Odd the Eternals and She Hulk were regular price…..
@alejandromolinac really? Maybe the liscence cost was lower
Also actor likeness cost.
@@alejandromolinacthe eternals are now 50¢ for 12 at Ollie’s 😂😂😂😂😂😂
The problem is when companies take the price they ask for these types of licenses and transfer it to figures that do not have the licensing problem, thus making 35.00 the norm for the line.
Not all toy companies are greedy but Hasbro is as is Super 7.
Super 7 are the worst because they (B Flynn) plays off that they’re a FOR profit company. He deflects, points fingers, plays “little engine that could” and acts as if he does it out of his garage and gives away toys…. Like we are all schmucks
Is the reason the electric effects on the movie figure's face aren't removable due to Jaime Fox liscensing issues?
Yup. I am doing a second video on that too
Hey Scott, do you see any way to rectify the issue of figures being released much later than the movie? Thanks for the video!
Higher royalty might be true for movies.but that would mean the same for McFarlane who owns the DC license.
So my assumption is that McFarlane is eating the higher royalty difference to keep the price the same. While Hasbro refuses to do so
Except the other Spider-man No Way Home figures were $10 less. Target today also has the Iron Man LXXXV figure from Marvel Studios priced $10 less than Electro.
Love your videos. They're so informative and the best part is they are coming from some one that knows their stuff.
I understand the royalties but what i don't understand are "likeness rights". Three years late and Electro still doesn't have Jamie Fox's likeness? What is the point of producing a figure that is not accurate like the rest?
Occasionally toy companies DO have input on the movie. A famous example is Ghostbuster II. Which was a mess. There is basically the movie Ramis, Aykroyd, and Reitman wanted to make, the movie Columbia Pictures wanted to make, the movie Kenner wanted to make, and even DiC animation gave input in some of the script meeting. (DiC had a representative so they could work references to GB II into episodes that would air the September after the movie's release.) I heard Kenner wanted the Ghostbusters to get a new vehicle. So Ramis and Aykroyd wrote in the whole sequence with the Statue of Liberty. Then what happened? Kenner didn't make a Statue of Liberty vehicle/playset... nope they just released a repainted of the Ecto-1 with a different license plate.
This is the exact reason why I try to stick to figures that interest me, And forward to the Marvel Legends spiderman Unlimited figure because it's one of my favorite spider suits.
So, Hasbro could have taken the hit to their wallets and made the choice not to. So, they are being greedy.
The figure is not shipping right now. So the unpredictable future tariff is also a factor.
It’s simple, because most Marvel Legends collectors don’t demand better pricing and quality from Hasbro and buy anything at any price that comes their way. Even if the same figure has been released several times before, they will still buy it. Collectors have themselves to blame for a figure like this MCU Electro being priced at $34.99.
How do the royalties work if the line fails if the TV or movie is a bomb and goes to Ollie's.
Star Wars demand theirs up front and Hasbro eat it
I bought the female Electra. The MCU Electro looks somewhat bigger, but I would think $3 to $5 more at the most to account for extra plastic. $35? No way.
What a sad story about Hasbro having to pay more royalties for not-Jamie-Fox-because-we-don’t-have-access-to-his-likeness. Regardless of the justification, I simply will not pay $35 + tax & shipping for it. I suspect others will feel the same and these things will go unsold and live at Ollie’s for decades.
Hasbro easily could have done a "Spiderman Classics" like that featured Classic movie villains from the older 5 movies... and they just happen to include the Sinister... 5?
Hasbro is just price gouging at this point. They know we're hooked on plastic crack and there will always be a collector to pay for something they want.
1. When are you going to get a better camera?
2. If figures aren't release to keep secrets why are there casting announcements?
Another excellent video!
Sounds like WCB channel .. Hasbro? Gona do? What Hasbro, is gona do😊 (for better or worse) both? Look cool. One? Is bigger than the other..yknow . Deluxe vs normal! Yet? Some happily pay 25.00 for a ewok or Skeleton crew kids :/
Ps ? We knew Doc Ock was to be in it from the trailers. And? Others too . Though? That was a while back and I just woke up😊
I didn’t know the electro Jamie fox was made. I’ll want to get that.
Problem is that it doesn't have a resemblance of Jaime Foxx. Too much for licensing.
Now we know… and knowing is half the battle…
What happened to the chronological Star Wars figure reviews?
So Hasbro is be greedy with their classified line for G.I.Joe!
That one can be explained by perceived value. Hasbro deliberately makes less accessories and such for Classifed figures because doing so would seem like Star Wars and Marvel Legends at the same price point are valued less. As a result, Hasbro makes less weapons and such included in the figures, when they would, in fact, actually have room in the budget to do so.
Facsinating 👏
Oh, so it's because licensors **and** Hasbro are greedy? That makes sense but consumers still don't have to accept it.
So true there, if you want the figure. Then wait till its on sale or ends up at Ollie's, after all the general quality is not worth the price and you are better off getting at somewhere $15 or under.
Yes. You do and will accept it. Or you can just not buy any but don’t cry when nothing gets made.
@ Alternatively, take your false dilemma and... and shill it!
Scott...I still gave you a like, but it's NOT the movie Electro figure...why?...No Jamie Foxx likeness or Iron Man Arc reactor in his chest like in the movie...this Electro figure that Hasbro is putting out can pass and looks like a cheap knock-off. Licensing and royalty excuse can't be used here for Hasbro's ongoing laziness and sloppy work as of lately...also...real dumb on their part to release two of the same Electro figures with different prices at the same time...this is where the "Greed" took hold of them.
Oh completely. I was going to bring this up but thought the whole sneaky way they evaded the likeness rights would be a separate video subject!
Yeah, Scott...it sucks, cause, well...I love Hasbro, but what they have been doing over the past 2-3yrs. is confusing and questionable....in my mind, I feel they need to let go of some of the higher ups and get some new ship Captains. Is the toy community dominated by us adults? Yeah...but they are still a toy company and have continued to price kids out of figures and have forgotten that kids should be their main customer. Modern kids now lean more towards Gamestop....If I was an 8-12yr.old kid in 2025, I'd be through the roof with modern day action figures!
Trump's tariffs are going to make everything even more expensive. It's a national sales tax. Look at your tax bill from last year and double it.
OMG the economy expert!
I am still waiting for Uncle Mike break out his car battery and start his electroshock therapy…..
LOL
It's called greed plus Hasbro knows they're hasbroooos will buy anything an for any price that's not Jamie Fox look at some of he's face what you can see that's another brother
Hasbro and Disney are both greedy. No excuses.
The reason the studios have to charge more for a movie version is because... often time the studio has to give some of their money to the actor. For instance, you had two Wonder Woman figures... one looks like a George Perez design. The other looks like Gal Gadot. The George Perez version, WBD PROBABLY owns that lock stock and barrel and if they don't have to give Perez's family mere pennies on the dollar. Whereas, Gal Gadot probably had a prearranged deal in her movie contract where she is entitled to any figure made in her likeness. Now, if that's the standard 5-10%... well... WBD will raise their royalty to the toy company by whatever percentage they'd owe her.
Because there's always an idiot that's going to buy it
I guess you don't care about the volume being so low...
Still coming out low? Hoped I had fixed this. Will keep adjusting! Thanks I appreciate the feedback.
You’re literally getting the same figure but in female form that nobody asked for to begin with lol
Oh so that's why Deedra Meero is hot right now, (and yes so is the actresses that plays her )
Trump need to remove those other languages on packaging
this channel was better when you werent on camera all the time. less is more
Sounds like the licensor is the pne being greedy.
