    As the battery level increases, the charging slows down. Thats why the Anker only charged it 5percent. You can try the Anker again for 10mins while the level is lower, say about 40percent

    Very interesting. I have noticed many touring cyclists have ditched their solar panels because they just weren’t getting a useful charge. Maybe Gambia and that strong tropical sunlight is the key. Glad they are working for you. I imagine you wouldn’t really have had the necessity to rely on them in Northern Europe because grid power is rarely that far away.

      It's all good if you're sleeping in a bed next to an outlet every evening, otherwise you either need solar/a dynamo or you need to stop in restaurants ect for multiple hours a day to charge your devices

    • @NomadsTrails
      @NomadsTrails  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, it was actually pretty handy to have the panels for us when we were cycling in Scandinavia during summer time. as Felix mentioned it is nice when we don't have to stop couple of hours a day for charging.but all depends on how you travel, we wild camp every night in Scandinavia so we didn't have access to gird 😊

    Just one detail Payman in order to compare the charging power of each solar panel you need to start charging when the phone has the same percentage of battery, if the battery has 35 % of charge is easy for the solar panel to charge the battery 7% in 10 minutes , as the battery has more charge it takes longer to charge that’s why the whet the phone has 70% of charge the Anker solar panel charged only 5% and the same 10 minutes. I can’t explain the physics of this but is something I heard from Neal DeGrasse Tyson 😅. Greetings from Norway.

    • @NomadsTrails
      @NomadsTrails  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi thanks for the info!
      We have tested both of the solar panels many times with different the phone battery being in a different level with wall charger and the result was the same. Unfortunately the footage for anker from the same test as sunbeam system wasn't good so we used the footage from another test. That is a reason battery levels are different. The test is not super accurate like lab test but it is pretty accurate and gives a real life experience. 😊

    I'm thinking of getting a dynamo hub, but it would greatly affect my pedal efficiency. Upon watching this, maybe I should get a solar panels to charge my batts not only when I move. Thanks guys!

    • @xxwookey
      @xxwookey ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't 'greatly affect pedal efficiency'. It's equivalent to about 1metre high gain per mile. Especially if touring with a load of stuff you really can't tell if you have a hub dynamo taking 4 or 10W - it's totally negligible. It is a lower power output than a 20W solar panel though. max 10-12W for most hub+charger combos, and less if you are cycling very slowly (due to massive loads or hills). Hub dynamos are brilliant because they _always_ work when the bike is moving more than 6km/h, but you can't run lights and charge a phone at the same time (in general) so the output is limited. I have an SP8 and a forumslader and that works really well for keeping phone nav going all day and lights at night. My wife has a SON which will probably last longer, but does the same job.
      PV works when you are not moving too (during the day, especially given clear skies), and that's certainly useful.

    The 20 watt panels are great for charging phones, tablets, radios, GPS, USB headlamps, and battery packs. A 20 Watt Elefeland USB panel makes about 2.3 Amps of 5.5 Volts or 12- 13 watts in the sun on a cool day which is much more than a Shimano hub dynamo.

    • @xxwookey
      @xxwookey ปีที่แล้ว

      A hub dynamo will make 6-10W depending how fast you pedal, so yes it's less than a 20W PV panel, and it's important that your charger is efficient so most of that power makes it into your lights/battery/gadgets.

    Hey guys, hope you're staying safe :) - just as a note, you can't really compare that way. To do a proper comparison you would need a meter and angle them the same way at the same time of day. Your sun angle may not be as efficient for the anker, the phone charger may only accept 5-10W so it wouldn't matter how many watts are theoretically possible on the Anker and finally, the batteries charge at different rates at different capacity (they charge faster when they are filled less) so this comparison may not be worthwhile but the overall concept of solar on a bike is excellent (I do the same).

    • @NomadsTrails
      @NomadsTrails  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, thanks for the note😊, Sun is pretty strong during the midday here (when we did test it) also we made sure the panels angle to the sun is the same by adjusting the panels.
      We have tested both of the solar panels when phone was 70% and when it was 40% also and the result was the exact same. The reason we choose the anker footage when the phone was 70% for the video because the footage was better in this test. Also the gird electricity is always the same. Correct? The test result between each of the solar panels (with phone battery being in different level) and the wall charger was confirming the test result. We don't claim the test is super accurate as lab test, but it is pretty accurate in our opinion. 😊

    Thanks for your videos. I actually used a two step system. I have the BigBlue which looks like the second one. I haven't measured its efficiency but I charged batteries and use the batteries to charge phones just because it seemed to switch off and not come ''on'' with the phone when I was under variable conditions. With the battery that did not happen. Without being on the grid, I was able to charge cell phone, music system, two lights on the bike and headlamp. Obviously, I did not have all these things all running all day nor did I strap the solar panel on the bike. I had to backup batteries that I would keep fully charged before leaving in the morning, breaks and at the end of the day. It worked great. Do you prefer one battery bank over another? Keep it up guys.

    • @NomadsTrails
      @NomadsTrails  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! Yes we tested a BigBlue briefly and found it to be very efficient 👌🏽 We have battery banks from RavPower and they have been great, still hold power well after over two years of daily use 👍🏼
