  • In this lesson, you will learn how to express your likes and dislikes in Japanese.
    The Japanese grammar & sentence structures you’ll be learning are:
    1) Watashi wa N ga suki desu. (I like N.)
    2) Watashi wa N ga daisuki desu. (I love N.)
    3) Making a question sentence with the particle “ka”
    4) Answering to the question with “hai (Yes)” & “iie (no)”
    5) Ways for expressing dislikes
    We’ll also discuss the usage of Japanese particle ‘wa’ and ‘ga’ in this lesson.
    *Additional information about the hiragana character, "は"(usually pronounced as 'HA')
    I forgot to mention in the video, but the following two words " こんにちは (konnichiwa)" means 'Hello' and "こんばんは (konbanwa)" means 'Good evening', also include the character "は", and they are pronounced as "WA"🙏These words & 'the particle は' are exceptions and otherwise the hiragana character 'は' is pronounced as 'HA'! 😊
    Please leave a comment below if you like this video! I’ll be happy to make more videos like this if you like it !Thank you!

      @@Japarrot_LetsLearnJP Oh, I just learned "ちょっと". Can I also say "犬はちょっと..." to show that I'm not really a dog person?

    • @Japarrot_LetsLearnJP
      @Japarrot_LetsLearnJP  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TingBie Yes! If someone asks you 'Do you like dogs?', you can reply by saying '犬はちょっと...(inu wa chotto...)'. 'ちょっと (chotto) means 'a little' in Japanese, but also can be used when you want to say 'No' indirectly. However, if you want to say 'I'm not really a dog person.' without someone asking you, it is more clear to say ' 犬があまり好きじゃありません。 (inu ga amari suki ja arimasen= I don't really like dogs)'.

    Isnt ga always marking the doer of the action or the subject being in a certain state? So in this case the dog is not the object in Japanese but the doer. I would translate it more to For me, Dog is likeable/pleasant, which sounds more unnatural in English but it is how Japanese works, isn't it? This way the particles mark what they usually mark.

    • @Japarrot_LetsLearnJP
      @Japarrot_LetsLearnJP  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you for your question. Regarding the sentence ' 私は犬が好きです。(watashi wa inu ga suki desu.) = I like dogs.', the subject is '私 (watashi) = I'. The particle 'が (ga)' has many different usage, and as you pointed out, in some cases it's used as a subject marker. However, in this case 'が(ga)' is used to mark the object of the verb '好き (suki) = like'. This is becuase there is a grammar rule in Japanese that the verbs & adjectives that describe preference, ability, possession & like use the particle 'が' to mark its objects. I hope this helps!

    THANK YOU for another amazing lesson. I'm learning so much from these videos and I'm very thankful.
    This is NOT a complaint, but I would like to point out that in standard English:
    Q: Do you like dogs?
    A: Yes, I do* (not "Yes, I like") (in short answers standard English always uses the same modal/auxiliary used in the question; to use the verb, you also need a pronoun or noun)
    Alternative -> A: Yes, I like dogs. / A: Yes, I like them.
    Other examples:
    1
    Q: Can you drive?
    A: Yes, I can / No, I can't (same modal used in the question)
    2
    Q: Have you ever been abroad?
    A: Yes I have / No, I haven't (here the verbal tense is 'present perfect',so 'have' is not the verb, but the auxiliary)
    3
    Q: Are you a student?
    A: Yes, I am / No, I'm not (the verb 'BE' is special, as it works as an auxiliary of itself - we used BE in the question, so we use it in the answer)
