I tried to cross IRELAND in 24 hours BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT

- Can Mrs Turtle and I string together buses and trains to get from Ireland's most southerly bus stop at Baltimore to the most northerly at Malin Head in 24 hours? Will we get blown away by Storm Kathleen? And will Ireland get a new Taoiseach before we reach the end of the journey?
Errata: Ulster does of course have 9 counties, not 7 as confidently stated at 28:45.
Music listing:
06:25 JS Bach - Goldberg Variations No 14
09:13 L van Beethoven - Piano Sonata No 31 in A flat Major - Scherzo
14:57 'Milk' - The Mini Vandals
22:40 'Daley's Reel' - Nat Keefe with the Bow Ties
27:29 JS Bach - Italian Concerto - Presto
32:49 JP Sousa - 'The Glory of the Yankee Navy'
36:39 'When Irish Eyes are Smiling' - Freedom Trail Studio
41:43 'It's A Long Way to Tipperary' - William Hooley - 1914 recording from the Library of Congress
You might not be the most frequent uploader but your videos are the best.

John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Hear, hear 👍👍
Ulster is 9 counties!
Monaghan, Cavan, Donegal, Antrim, Down, Tyrone, Fermanagh, Armagh and Derry!
Indeed it is, my apologies. There’s a correction in the description.
Thought that was the case...!
Yay! A traveling Turtle upload! Every once in a while the question comes up on the JetLag The Game subreddit about “who would you like to guest star”, and my dark-horse answer is Traveling Turtle.
I’m worried that would mean me ending up lurking suspiciously in a freezing Swiss playground for hours on end 😉
Travelling Turtle on Jet Lag would be the best crossover ever!
I would definitely put my #teamben membership on hold for a season if it was to happen
travelling turtle ftw dude, i would pay money to see him as a guest star
AGREED!! he would undoubtedly be THE best guest. although these videos are way better researched than jet lag to be fair
I always think it's quite ironic that Ireland's most northerly point is further north than anywhere in Northern Ireland.
Good job no one really refers to it as ‘Southern Ireland’ any more!
My mum and dad are buried near Malin.
@@kokobwild2413 Such a stunning area.
@@travelling_turtle still meet plenty of Brits who refuse to call it anything else
@@travelling_turtle Half of NI still just refers to it as 'the South', though (which may, or may not, include Donegal)
As an Irish person , very impressed with the accuracy of your knowledge. Great video.
Thanks so much, great to hear.
@@travelling_turtle You undertook a very dangerous verbal journey for an englishman and acquitted yourself well.

As ever, an object lesson in how these videos should be done. The commentaries are always beautifully scripted, and the music choices unmatched by any similar channel. Truly superb!
Thanks so much!
absolutely agreed, the commentary and the music choices are unmatched!
Totally! When I decided to do similar stuff in Swedish I pretty much modelled it after this. With my own twist of course, and not modern music.
But the format is amazing and I just love everything about it! V
@@fredskronk your videos are defnitely 'crazy' !! amazing work
@@Nooticus haha. Thanks. I mean. We all love some slow crazy journeys, don’t we?
25:00 Last week Irish Rail actually unveiled a repainted class 2600 (2601/2602) set in the black and orange Arrow livery to commemorate 30 years of the Arrow!
Saw a picture - looks stunning!
Your channel is pure gold! I wish all "youtubers" shared your enthusiasm.
Thank you so much!
Jo, as an Irishman living in the UK and an enthusiast/advocate of public transport in both the UK and Ireland, I'm so glad to have stumbled upon your channel through this video! This is truly outstanding work, you have such an eloquent style and tone, and shed so much light on parts of Irish history even I didn't know. As someone who's taken many of the routes you took in my youth, including many many trips on the Sligo/Dublin train as a Sligo man who went to uni in Dublin, this was such a lovely trip down memory lane. Liked and subscribed, can't wait to see more from you!
Oh that is so lovely to hear! Thank you so much for the kind words and the subscription!
❤
Just a few notes on this - there's 9 counties in Ulster, two more in ROI - Cavan and Monaghan. Trains never went beyond Sligo, the stub line at the station went to Sligo Docks. Donegals services were via Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry
Thanks, have put in an errata re the 9 counties! Schoolboy error.
I think there was a line from Sligo that want to Donegal, I will check my Railway Atlas of old Irish Railways to make sure I am right.
@@AtoZbyLocalBus yes ...once could have travelled by train from my home town in Tyrone to Burtonport in Donegal by train. My grandfather used to send home horses from fairs all over Ireland by train, to within three miles of his rural farm near Carrickmore.
There was a train from Collooney in Sligo to Enniskillen in Fermanagh.
@@Boreas74Sligo,Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway.I have book on it.
As always, brilliantly put together. Your videos always make me feel like I’m taking the journey too! One thing they have opened my eyes to are the joys of slower forms of transport, like buses, to really see a place. A lot of stuff gets missed with plane and train travel! It may have been 24 hours, but you sure saw a whole lot along the way.
Thanks so much!
Yet another magnificent travelogue.
The quality of the video is only surpassed by the quality of the narrative and its commentary on the geography and the history.
Look forward to the next. Thank you.
Wow, that is so kind, thank you!
Totally agree, the narrative and the music is exquisite.
Having started my day today on a 4:23 train out of Vienna I feel a strange empathy with the channel, and your narrative is as always both educational and delightful. More again please!
Yikes, that is early. Hope your journey has gone well!
@@travelling_turtle well enough to get home three hours earlier than planned :)

There's an idea
- get across Austria in 24hrs by regional train & bus,
not using the RailJets nor ICEs.
I was in Ireland from May 1 to May 12th. One of my stops (driving a rental car) was in Baltimore. I had a beautify sunny day, people drinking and eating outside a pub, me I got a sandwich at a picnic table overlooking the harbor. I found a possible place where my ancestor on my father's side came from south of the city of Cork. Indeed it a beautiful place, with great contrasts. With their narrow roads, I think anyone driving anything larger than a mini, especially a bus or truck, must be on the good side of St. Christoper to be their co-pilot. Thank you for another of your adventures with your companion, with your narration, history comments, careful use of music and overall presentation.
Thanks so much - and glad you got to see Baltimore in the sunshine!
Got to love Ireland ❤🇮🇪
As a long time Irish follower, I've been waiting a while for this video and it didn't disappoint! Great work as usual 😁
Delighted to have lived up to expectations!
Exactly what I, a Canadian from the other side from the pond, needed after a tiring first day at my new job. Thank you!
Great to hear, hope the new job goes well!
10:05 Thin Lizzy...
Yes
Ha ha - I came here to say that but you got in first!
I came here to say that too, but Metallica is also true, although a play on the brilliant Lizzy version, certainly not on the original!!
👍 Thin Lizzy.
The definitive version for my generation.
I followed your wonderful journey on Twitter, and the video doesn’t disappoint! It’s great you show that travelling, particularly in rural areas, is possible by public transport, albeit requiring planning and patience.
Delighted you enjoyed it!
Great video, very enjoyable as always.
Regards from Auckland, New Zealand.
Thank you!
Your videos are some of my favourites on youtube, and this was no exception. Thoroughly enjoyable, thank you for taking us along on the adventure!
Thanks so much - glad you enjoined the ride!
And there it is, ladies and gentlemen….. A new adventure with none other than mrs. Turtle! I absolutely loved this one…. I was only in Ireland once and that was 30 years ago, but after seeing this wonderful video, I must be back…. Thank you so much for letting all of us share in your amazing journeys together!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it.
Turned a dull Saturday into an Excellent Saturday. Thanks to you and Turtle.
Excellent, thank you!
Perfect viewing for a Friday evening, always a joy to watch, cheers and thank you.
Thank you so much!
In the Dubliners version of “Whiskey in the Jar” the lyrics refer to “the far famed Kerry Mountains” rather than the “Cork and Kerry mountains”. But folk songs often have multiple versions of their lyrics.
Yes, I came across both versions researching this.
Thin Lizzie aka Tin Lizzie
Absolutely loved this video! Such a lovely surprise seeing one of my favourite channels uploading a video traversing my home country!
I must say I have sympathy with those passengers longing for the old orange themed livery for Iarnród Éireann trains. My first train memory is watching those trains pull into Cork Kent station with incredibly loud and harsh (at least to my young ears at the time) brakes screeching. So I have an attachment to those designs!
Delighted you enjoyed it! The orange and black was certainly one of the most distinctive train liveries out there, so I can understand the attachment to it…
As someone who's a semi-regular traveller from cork to sligo, your journey was an interesting one. Definitely beautiful and poetically narrated at time, and the blue book sounds like an interesting read. You definitely could have done some things faster, but you also definitely dodged some mighty transport pitfalls too!
Thanks very much - yes it could have been done slightly faster (though not much) and I was definitely lucky with the various things that could have gone very wrong…
@@travelling_turtle and the best adventures are seldom the most optimal

Aw, thanks!
Mr Turtle, my wife and I stumbled upon and absolutely loved this travelogue!
Delighted to hear it, thank you!
So glad to see traveling through such a beautiful country. After watching your back catalogue again, the effrot and research that goes into your videos is remarkable. Keep up the good work. Thank you!
Thanks so much!
Brilliant brought back happy memories of holidays in Ireland 😊
That’s great!
3:58 Interesting that the buses in Canberra use the same program to deliver onboard passenger information
What a lovely surprise to see a new video on a cold, wet Saturday morning - the best accompaniment to the first coffee of the day
Glad to be of service - waves from Friday evening!
You always make me want to go exploring 😊 I'm taking the local slow train to the southern most city in my country next weekend and I can't wait!
Ooh, exciting!
Yes. It's inspired me to try similar things. I'm looking at one day doing west Kent to east Kent...which seems a natural one as I live in Tunbridge Wells which is almost the most westerly point. I'm a poor traveller and get annoyed/frustrated after about 3 hours so I'd have to be mentally prepared as these things are more tiring than they look
What a FANTASTIC video that was! I thoroughly enjoyed your mix of historical facts, good humour and stunning scenery - miles (or should I say kilometres?) better than most travelogues on TV. Thank you for creating it!
Thanks so much! Whether it is miles better or kilometres better depends on which side of the invisible border you are 😉
The views were incredible. This has inspired me to do more bus journeys in rural areas when I go on holiday.
Hurrah!
Thats the good part of very small countries, an airport bus that goes halfaway across the nation.
Indeed! Very handy.
They are essential to the economy of Ireland.
38:00 every SINGLE FRAME is a spectacular painting. WOW WOW WOW
Astonishing place, isn’t it!
I was wondering where your next challenge journey was going to take us. You have not disappointed with great views and your usual informative narration.
Thank you!
Thanks very much for coming to visit, hope you enjoyed your time. You are a brave man to trust Irish public transport.
You did very well with pronunciations. I would say Leitrim is more like Leetrim.
Ulster has 9 counties, 6 in Northern Ireland and 3 in Ireland.
Thanks again for coming!
Thank you, I had an excellent time - every intention of doing another challenge to Ireland soon!
Except for lough (and in Scotland loch), which English people seem to be unable to pronounce because it has a sound that isn't used at all in the English language. It is not pronounced "lock".
@@katrinabryce I suspect a German speaker would pronounce it closer to what it should be.
So glad I came across your channel. Every video has been informative, entertaining and a joy to watch. Always a surprise in there too! Thanks, hope you and Mrs Turtle keep finding new travel challenges!!
Thank you so much - plenty more in the pipeline!
Lovely to see the roads of County Donegal again - I cycled Mizen to Malin about 20 years ago and it's all coming back to me now. Great video - well done.
Thank you!
Quite brave to be exploring that pocket of the inner city at 6am! Love the video.
Thank you!
This is lovely stuff, maith an fear. I spent the latter quarter of 2023 in Maynooth, Ireland and travelled almost entirely by rail during my time there. I've been missing Ireland lately and this was a great bit of nostalgia. I spent many a late night dashing through Connolly Station to catch the last train home!
Also, as an Irish-American who has dealt with some stunning ignorance from British acquaintances about Irish history, I was thoroughly impressed by your command of the subject. Excellent work all around, a chara.
Thank you so much! Delighted you enjoyed it and that it provided some nostalgia (can you have nostalgia from last year…?)
this is the content i've been hoping for all these years
Delighted to supply it!
Wonderful video! The Sligo train has definitely improved since I last used it, back in the mid 1990s.
Thank you!
A real Friday night treat, thank you. This brought back some memories of my trips to the Emerald Isle particularly co. Cork with its stunning countryside and colourful villages and towns. Oh and the unpredictable weather too sweeping in off the Atlantic.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed. I certainly didn’t expect *quite* so many different types of weather in 24 hours…
Oh bless you, this video makes my day! So many routes along the way I used to travel by public transport myself during my returning visits to the country that I call my home away from home. So wonderful to be able to revisit them via this video! ❤☘🇮🇪
That’s wonderful to hear, thank you!
Absolutely superb! Looking forward to your next adventure.
Thanks so much!
Thanks for another great Journey (13:56 reference and otherwise)! I sometimes struggle with the voice-over, though.
Do you want a Yeti Blue microphone? I have a very sparingly used one lying around that I am unlikely to use anytime soon
Thank you! Sorry about voiceover - I think a lot of it is my diction and sibilance rather than the microphone, as I have a reasonable one. That’s a very kind offer, which I may take you up on if more fiddling with mine doesn’t improve matters!
@@travelling_turtle No worries really -- I should clarify it's very minor. In any case, thanks again and let me know if it's needed!
What an extraordinarily kind offer - you are genuinely a good person to do that;
chapeau, sir, chapeau.
@@ericdunn555 Well, thanks, but as of yet the box is still collecting dust at the back of my wardrobe 😅 But it is available if needed

Thank you for this wonderful trip in the style of the best travel writing. I loved every minute.
Thanks so much for your kind words!
Great video as usual, your narration is like poetry, second only to the musical soudtrack. Always a joy to see my home town of Carndonagh featured in any sort of travel content. Cafe bamba is the place to go for coffee and baked goods, named after Banba's Crown, the hill at Malin head where the tower sits, where the cafe first began as a small coffee truck in the summer months.
Thank you so much! And discovering Cafe Bamba was a joy….
First-rate filming, but next time from wherever you start you should take the road to Blacksod - instead of Sligo, take the train to Ballina, then the bus to Blacksod at the bottom of the Belmullet peninsula. Sorry I can't post a picture or two, but it's more spectacular by half than the footage you've posted (which is of course spectacular). Well done you for enduring the voyage!
Thank you - and thank you for the hints for future travels. Looks amazing!
but ... But ... BUT ...
wouldn't have made Malin Head in
@@ericdunn555 It's a long time since I took the train from Dublin (1970s) - Manulla Junction looks like a recent invention. It used to be a change at Claremorris if coming by train from Dublin, or (if flying in) a series of buses from Shannon Airport via Galway and Ballina to Blacksod itself, which had one bus each way every day back then, now has two or three! And no, it's an alternative to Malin Head, not a detour.
@@paristen8556
Oh indeed, Blacksod is way off the beaten track to Malin, so is definitely a destination in it's own right, not an alternative routing - sorry if I didn't make that clear.
Manulla Junction (I'm guessing here - must brush up my knowledge of Iarnrod Éireann's consolidations) has been an instrument of the Dark Forces for several decades, as far as I'm aware; in the middle of nowhere, it is only somewhere you have to go to in order to get to somewhere else
- just like Carlow, where I live now, was for many decades.
Thanks for taking us along!!
Our pleasure!
As always, astonishingly thorough, positive and entertaining trave content! As someone else already said, your commentary and music choices are truly unmatched on any other travel channel.
It's also extremely lucky that the bus was 5 minutes late starting from Baltimore... if it left on time you would have gotten to Malin Head 'late' in 24 hours, 1 minute! Your planning abilities are admired :)
Thanks so much - delighted you enjoyed it. Yes, the buffer was vital to not narrowly failing the challenge - and I can’t take any credit for that!
Ireland is such an amazing place! Thank you for taking us on this journey. Recently I took the bus from Clifden to Westport, which was already beautiful, but those first and last sections on your journey are just stunning.

Yet another fine video my friend. Nicely reminded of my first trip to Ireland, way back in the late 80s now. Caught the ever so rough Swansea to Cork ferry (now defunct?) to Ringaskiddy and by a combination of train, bus and hitch made it to all points further west. End of May this way, so got soaked every day! Highlight was a must-have-been 45 minute hitched ride with a local. We had a fine conversation but I didn't get a single word he was saying...!
Thank you so much! I mourn the loss of the Swansea-Cork ferry…
Brilliant video as always..

I have just watched your trip across Northern Ireland and really enjoyed it. I know so much more now about that beautiful place. I even got my old map out to follow your route! I'm glad you weren't sitting beside the smashed window. Thank you. 🎉
Glad you enjoyed it! Luckily the smashed window experience hasn’t put me off the front row of front decks!
Thanks for this. Always great to see you and Mrs Turtle on your travels. I have a brother in Ireland - and although our family name has Irish connections - there being a Lough Rea and a Lough Rae in close proximity in Ireland - we actually hail from the West Midlands where a "rea" is the local term for a small river. There are some arguments about the spelling - some half forgotten story about sheep stealing I believe, but the river Rea is still there.
Thanks! Did not know about that particular bit of West Midlands usage!
An absolute delight and wonderful as always Jo. A fantastic surprise to see your video pop up. Hoping that there will be more travels soon 👍🙂
