How far WEST can I get from the Prime Meridian by PUBLIC TRANSPORT in 24 hours?

- Last year we went east from the Greenwich Meridian...so the obvious follow up - how far WEST can we get, by surface public transport, in 24 hours?
Join Mrs Turtle and I as we head out into the August murk on an epic adventure to the edge of Europe.
Few things replicate the childish thrill of a Christmas morning knowing you're in for a treat better than logging on to TH-cam to see Mr. Travelling Turtle has uploaded
Aww, I’ll have to get Mrs Turtle a Santa hat….
This must be the most underrated travel challenge channel on TH-cam. Another delightful journey; wonderfully narrated with interesting tidbits and just the right amount of slightly dry humour.
Thank you so much!
I like that the videos are just done as and when appropriate, not forced into some schedule. They always come across as a work of love not a chore
Its always a good day when The Travelling Turtle publishes. Looking forward to north adventures.
I wonder where he’d start on the equator? He’d have to go to Indonesia or Ecuador to have any chance of getting far enough north or south on public transport
I absolutely adore these videos, the amount of history and culture packed into each narration is so impressive.
Thank you so much!
Another beautifully narrated travelogue.
Perhaps not quite as dramatic as some of your others, but the use of linguistically beautiful language is once again a treat.
The only problem with watching more of your wonderful travelogues is the danger of running out of suitable superlatives to describe them!
May you, and Mrs Turtle, long continue to find and explore these delightful journies
Thank you.
That’s so kind - I am delighted you enjoy them so much.
Thanks. Always enjoy your poetic little jaunts.
Thank you!
These videos are so cathartic and eloquently written! Really inspiring me to try similar things, slowing the pace and just enjoying the journey more for the sake of it than focussing too much on the destination
Thank you so much! Hope they inspire you to something fun.
When you said the DLR was 37 years old, I thought "no, it can't be, I remember riding it on its first day when I lived on the Isle of Dogs and we finally had an alternative to buses". And then I realised that 1987 is indeed 37 years ago, and what a kick up the arse of my mortality that is! How much it, and the area has changed!
Sorry for the momento mori… If it’s any consolation, my first ride on it was in 1988 and it still feels like yesterday!
The voice over is immaculate, written like some french existentialist novel at times
Thanks. Clearly those months studying ‘L’Etranger’ for A-level French were not wasted.
@@travelling_turtle Well maybe I'd have remebered more of Camu's thoughts if they were packed into a travel vid
Absolutely love when you post. Completely inspired me to travel by rail around Europe as a young Irish student 🙌🙌🙌
That’s wonderful to hear!
Right, that's tonight's viewing sorted! I'll be back with more to say once viewed and fully expect what I say to be hugely positive if TT's up to his usual standard😀.
I cannot get enough of these videos. Well done
Thank you so much!
Great video. A nice connection - in your final bus you were listening to Handel and your Ferry was named after Swift. Handel’s Messiah was premiered in Dublin in the 1700s and was first performed by the St Patrick Cathedral choir where Jonathan Swift was Dean.
That is a brilliant connection that I hadn’t clocked! I tend to assume all of Handel’s major works of that period premiered in London, forgetting that Dublin was a major cultural centre for what was Britain at that time…
What a wonderful surprise to see another of your videos - coincidentally the second I've watched this week featuring a bus journey across Ireland, after Steve Marsh's latest upload. What a marvelous country is Éire. One day I'll make it back there...
Thank you! And yes, clearly Ireland is all the rage currently…
Honestly, it is the best travelling video I've seen in weeks. So poetic. Thank you.
Thanks so much!
"...roofless and pigeon-haunted, architectural remnants of a former cohesive whole are left in Ozymandian, decontextualised isolation."
I come for the scenery but I stay for these turns of phrase. Thank you, as always, Mr Turtle!
Thank you so much, delighted you enjoy them!
Brilliant as always. Lovely surprise on this Monday evening. Can't wait to see the next adventure already 👍😀
Thank you so much!
Finally allowed myself to watch this at tea time this evening. Don't know how I managed to stop myself diving in as soon as it dropped yesterday! My patience was amply rewarded - fantastic video as always. Thank you :)
Thank you so much, Sue. Well done on the patience!
Another brilliant video. I possibly the only time ive guessed where turtle will end up
Thank you! There was, I suppose, a limited number of possible destinations…
Have been a huge fan of your travels on X/Twitter and here for a while and as recent Irish emigrant to New Zealand from Kildare, which is never mentioned on the variety of videos I watch here, you would nearly bring a tear to a glass eye. Beautiful West of Ireland and great to see you yet again take advantage of the best thing to happen to the country in a long time which is indeed the Local Link service. 100% friendliest drivers around
Delighted to bring back some memories - and absolutely agree on Local Link.
Wonderful, as always. As others have noted before me, it's always such a treat when you upload new travelogues! :)
Thank you - delighted you enjoy them!
“Now, I'm not much of an ornithologist” - we could tell when you called the Tralee bus station rook a raven ;)
Fun video as usual though, I always enjoy the little tidbits of obscure history and your poetic descriptions of mundane observations.
Yeah, sorry. Not sure if I insulted rooks or ravens more with that one 😉
Watching your trips and listening to your wonderful turn of phrase is always a genuine pleasure. Thank you and keep up the great work!
Thanks so much!
Awesome trip! May I humbly suggest you embark upon the remaining two points of the compass rose? Perhaps the turtle clan can provide some guidance on the most useful routes.
Thanks! Going south is basically what I did in the ‘24 hours by train from London’ video, but getting off one stop earlier. North, however…!
@@travelling_turtle Indeed, Scotland? Or Europe? Which would allow the furthest travel?
@@travelling_turtleShetland?
Very enjoyable video. Perhaps not as thrilling when there's a definite end, but that's okay.
Thanks! I mean, there was always the possibility I might have taken up ocean swimming…
@@travelling_turtle I shall consider this a sneaky spoiler as to the challenge in your next video.
@@thomilo44 lol no!!!!
You know it's going to be a good day when you see a new Travelling Turtle video!
The way you narrate your videos is just so beautiful, these really are the definition of "Slow TV" and your adventures inspired me to complete my own adventure in September this year - heading as far north as I could in one day via just £2 buses. I'm just editing part two and wow, it takes ages so absolute kudos for you in making it flow so effortless together!
Are you planning on doing any more £2 bus journeys before the cap sadly ends in December?
Delighted you enjoyed it! By coincidence, I watched your part 1 video this morning - really enjoyed it, excellent work! Looking forward to part 2.
May try and squeeze in one more £2 adventure before the end of the scheme.
@@travelling_turtle oh I really hope you do. I live in dread of the day the senior bus pass becomes another victim od austerity part 2.
That's my evening video sorted with a glass of JD thanks Mrs Turtle
I just made almost exactly the same comment😀. Great minds?
@Robutube1 standard thing when Mrs Turtle post a video that a evening thing
The joy of having a whole new traveling turtle video to relax with after a stressful day ❤️
Enjoy!
I am so glad you're back :)
Also, and this is a good tip for anyone, really - it's the lens you want to look at, not the screen :)
Thank you! And good feedback…
I love settling in for a relaxing time you tube binge and seeing a new upload, thankyou for a wonderful, relaxing & informative adventure west ❤
Thank you, delighted you enjoyed it!
Wonderful as ever. Can confirm, you're not the first to have walked the very extensive pedestrian facilities at Dublin docks. Can also confirm it's a lot better than the old days trying to wheel a bag across broken cobbles. Bare feet, snow etc.
Thank you! Glad to hear they are getting some value for their many €s of investment from at least the two of us. All very smart and I can certainly believe it is an improvement…!
Just amazing. ... so unique!! Keep it up please
Thank you very much - we will!
Yay! New Travelling Turtle video.
Another top tier video! Its always such a pleasure when you post. I can't imagine all the work before and after these take to put together. Thank you!
Thank you - really glad you enjoy the videos!
Turtle!! Also, you have such a delightfully poetic turn of phrase. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to discover your channel, but I am eager to go through your back catalogue 🐢
Thank you! Enjoy discovering the back catalogue.
Thank you for another delightful journey, there are few more pleasing things to receive in your inbox than the notification that you and Mrs Turtle have been travelling again and have stories to share.
Hurrah, thank you!
Fantastic video once again Jo, thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thank you!
Fantastic to see you back. Really enjoy your videos.
Thank you!
Another lovely video. Thank you so much for taking us along with you
Thank you for coming along!
Brilliant as usual! Looking forward to the nest one already!
Thank you!
Fabulous journey as always. Thank you for taking us all with you.
Thank you for joining the journey!
What a lovely video! Always a delight to log on and see a video from you!
Thank you, delighted you enjoyed it!
Absolutely adore your videos! Always a great watch on evenings when I’m sick and tired! 🐢
Thank you so much. Hope you feel better soon.
Love the fact that to head west you first went south east! Love your videos.
Very briefly, yes! Though at least it was better than having to go all the way north west to St Pancras in order to go east…
Thanks!
Thank you again for a poetic trip this time featuring an actual poem! The flower rich roadsides brought back memories of my own West of Ireland travels.
Thanks! And yes, those roadsides are so distinctive and beautiful.
I enjoyed the John Betjeman reading. I didn't know that one, but when I'm on the Underground I often find myself thinking:
Gentle Brent, I used to know you
Wandering Wembley-wards at will,
Now what change your waters show you
In the meadowlands you fill!
Recollect the elm-trees misty
And the footpaths climbing twisty
Under cedar-shaded palings,
Low laburnum-leaned-on railings
Out of Northolt on and upward to the heights of Harrow hill.
Parish of enormous hayfields
Perivale stood all alone,
And from Greenford scent of mayfields
Most enticingly was blown
Over market gardens tidy,
Taverns for the bona fide,
Cockney singers, cockney shooters,
Murray Poshes, Lupin Pooters,
Long in Kensal Green and Highgate silent under soot and stone.
(I never found out what "Murray Poshes" or "Lupin Pooters" were.)
Then there was "Christmas". When my late grandfather was a headmaster and read it in school assemblies, he used to change "And lives to-day in Bread and Wine" to "And lives to-day and will be mine" because the implication of transsubstantiation was too High Church for him!
Wonderful! For the seven years I worked in west London, I couldn’t get on the Central Line each morning without reciting
Gaily into Ruislip Gardens
Runs the red electric train,
With a thousand Ta's and Pardon's
Daintily alights Elaine;
Hurries down the concrete station
With a frown of concentration,
Out into the outskirt's edges
Where a few surviving hedges
Keep alive our lost Elysium - rural Middlesex again.
@travelling_turtle I think I originally learned "Middlesex" as a child from a history of London by Stephen Inwood (which had a lot of excerpts from songs and poems, many of which have been stuck in my head for 20 years). I'm from Milton Keynes, and when I was young, going on the Underground during rare trips to London was magical. Unfortunately the Tube rather lost its lustre when I was working in London as a pupil barrister circa 2014 and travelling to inconvenient magistrates' courts on little sleep. Now that I work from home full-time I've learned to appreciate it again.
The coziest channel on TH-cam
Thank you!
A truly hidden gem of a channel. You should go north would be really interesting.
Thank you! I certainly will…
A enjoyable journey, as usual! Looking forward to the next one.
Thank you!
Love your beautifully written and presented videos. Looked like a lovely trip! Need to get myself over the Irish Sea for a creamer (Guinness)!
Thank you so much!
Nice of you to show this magic trip.from France
Merci beaucoup!
Brilliant, as ever. Thankyou.
Thank you!
Today is the best of days. A dot next to the Travelling Turtle site, indicating a new video. 🎉
😊
I love these videos! They are proper comfort viewing! Thanks mate, keep up the great work! 😊
Thanks so much - I will!
Another wonderful video as always, and watching this one in slightly less than ideal conditions i have to say thank you Jo for providing subtitles, much appreciated!
Thank you very much!
Brilliant video as always. An absolute joy to watch (and listen to!)
Thank you so much!
Another inspiring and profound journey
Thank you so much!
Great video as always. I cant imagine how much planning goes into your journeys! Absolute bargain trip this one too! Very much look forward to the next one. 🐢
Thank you so much!
Really enjoyed this one to see how far you'd get - I suspected the West of Ireland somewhere, but that final boat across would have been a superb bonus. The North Wales Coast line is hugely under-rated, lots of running close to the sea and watching the world go by before that move around Conwy Castle.
Would going North from the Meridian get you as far as the Shetlands? Possibly, but that would be an interesting sequel to watch.
I really like the narration style you have too - it really adds to setting the scene on the travels as well as having some really useful and fun facts throughout - just the right sense of humour.
Thank you! Yeah, I’m a bit sad I didn’t get to Blasket as well, but at least it looked excellent from afar…!
I’ve obviously been investigating going north - I actually think it would be a very close run thing between the Shetlands and somewhere in Sweden…
Wonderful, thanks! :)
Thank you!
These videos are like my comfort food, absolutely wonderful!
Thank you! And fewer calories…
Always enjoy the commentary on your adventures 😂
Thank you!
Excellent stuff!
Thank you!
Great journey! Looking forward to the next.
Thank you!
Fantastic! I hope you stayed on that stunning coast for a bit longer.
Thank you - yes, I had a good day to explore.
Another fantastic video Jo, these just put me in such a good mood, so excited seeing a new one come out!
Thank you so much, delighted you enjoyed it.
Loved this one. Really great.
Thank you so much!
Sorry I can't come to work/the pub/your wedding... I'm watching the new Travelling Turtle video instead!
Fantastic work as always 👍
lol! Glad you enjoyed it.
Another amazing video with greatly improved pacing between technical sentences. Great
Thank you - and pleased to hear the pacing is easier!
Love your videos. I love your meandering thoughts and dry wit, they reallycadd to these videos and these challenges.
Thanks so much!
Another great video, some of the best on youtube! Amazing scenery at the end!
Thank you so much - and yes, Dingle is incredible.
Another wonderful adventure, was wondering given the lack of area you had how you would fill 45 minutes of video and you've shown us some wonderful views and sights. Certainly more west than I ever assumed.
Thank you! Yes, there’s plenty of west…
That was a really excellent story from a masterful storyteller.
Thank you!
An absolutely beautiful video. Thank you.
Thank you!
Nice relaxing evening with You tube on the TV and a bag of popcorn as TT has just uploaded a new travel video - Bliss !!!
Hurrah!
Couldn't help thinking of you again as I lurked, not in Vienna this time, but at a Dublin bus stop at 4.45am a month or so ago... thanks for another informative and excellently written episode!
Thanks so much! Hope your horribly early in the morning bus turned up ok.
@@travelling_turtle yes it did :)
I am impressed that the Irish bus driver in Co. Kerry
offered you Handel on the radio at 8 in the morning.
I use Handel to wake me up and do the house work to.
An great "little" journey.
I’m not conversant enough in Irish radio stations to know what he was tuned to, but it was all nicely high brow!
@@travelling_turtle
Wikipedia tells me that RTÉ's classical channel is RTÉ Lyric FM
which is based in Limerick City
(and again according to Wikipedia)
has an audience share of 2.1%
Though I understand that some local Irish stations take RTÉ Lyric FM
in their dead periods.
Thanks you for this enchanting tale, amidst tilting trains and midnight busses.
Swift adventures and safe travels.
I'm looking currently for a more modest one here, a circumnavigation of my local region.
Thank you! That sounds an exciting little adventure.
Very entertaining as usual, thank you!
Thank you so much.
🥰🐢☘🐉💜 thank you so much for sharing your adventures 😊
@@Beecosy Thank you!
Amazing journey. Ireland has some gorgeous scenery!
It really does.
Turtle time! 🐢
A magnificent treat as always, I guess the next trip might be 24 hours heading north?😂
Thank you! That will definitely happen at some point…
I love your videos - they are like food for the soul! What an enjoyable watch ❤
Thank you so much - delighted you enjoy them!
Another fabulous, artistic, wonderfully researched and presented vlog. I thought you were going to cycle for 24 hours at first and thought south west Wales a possibility. Then I realised the bike was just to the station and thought Ireland but more north west.
Thank you! To be honest, I doubt I would make Wales by bike in south west Wales in 24 hours, and also the Lime bike would probably lock up 😉
Another very nicely compiled and eloquently narrated video. This gave me the perfect excuse to put off my tax paperwork for another evening. It's a shame you didn't make it to Great Blasket. My late father and I made the journey about 15 years ago, and I can attest that it is stunningly beautiful.
Thank you, and my apologies to HMRC. Getting to Great Blasket is an excuse to get out to Dingle again!
@@travelling_turtle 😄 Actually, it's been the Austrian Finanzamt for the last 12 years! Greetings from Bregenz. Yes, Blasket is well worth the journey to Dingle.
I'm glad I had the subtitles on, as I was about to be perplexed how the statue in Tralee was destroyed in 1939, decades after the Irish Civil War ended
Yeah, that would have been quite something. Apologies for the mess up in the script.
Cracking content as always!
Thank you!
Well. Very nice as always.
Thank you!
Rewatched your Going East video yesterday, so really excited to see the inevitable sequel today! At least this time there's no "counterintuitive occidental travel", but "Intentional occidental travel"
Good timing! Yes, was able to head in the right direction from the start this time….
Another gem. I did wave as you past my office!
Thank you! 👋
Always a joy to see one of your videos in my feed. Thanks as always!
Side note - a few years ago, analysis of the water in Gleann na nGealt (the Valley of the Mad) revealed surprisingly high levels of lithium - commonly used nowadays as a treatment for schizophrenia. So maybe the ancients were a bit ahead of us.
Thank you so much! That is really interesting about Gleann na nGealt- so often some sort of basis for the myths…
Great video as alway Jo
Thanks so much!
Thnx for this interesting video.
Thank you!
Loved it, excellent video . Still waiting ( somewhat) patiently for the video of the lowest bus stop in the UK to the highest 🙏🙏🙏🙏👍
Thanks very much!
Great day 😃 thank you mr turtle 🐢
Thank you!
I really enjoyed this, thanks. I live in Greenwich so I'm mildly obsessed with the prime meridian. Have you thought about starting from anywhere else instead of Greenwich? Stratford is right on the line which would give you a quicker journey into the main stations (or straight to Dover). Although, I suppose if you're not starting at Greenwich and you want to go east, somewhere in France would probably be the best option. 24 hours from Le Mans? (You can have that title for free)
Thank you - Greenwich seems like the ‘home’ of the Prime Meridian (and it is local to me too!) so that was always the first choice, but there’s definitely scope for finding if somewhere could be more efficient…
Awesome video. Not having a dedicated bus to the City from the Ferry port in Dublin seems like a bit of an own goal, though lovely news for the taxi's.
Thank you! There is supposed to be a dedicated bus…
Looking forward to parts 3 and 4 of these challenge series.
You probably won’t get south, as that is just this th-cam.com/video/6MNEA4rimys/w-d-xo.htmlsi=64N7Rlr4BCkxGN9j but getting off a stop early, but north will happen!
My guess was The Scilly Isles , ah well , wonderful vid as usual
Thank you! The Scillies are a lot less than 24 hours away (though they are lovely and I must find an excuse to do a video there one day…)
