  • Featuring a vibrant mix of archive film and interviews this documentary charts the history of the iconic R4. As well as hearing from the R4 enthusiasts gathered at the 50th birthday celebrations in Thenay, France in July 2011, there are retold tales of the adventures this ultra capable car enabled, from globe-trotting catwalk models to the student film makers and modern rallying youngsters. Dutch R4 enthusiast Bram Van Oeffelt shows off his outstanding collection of original 60s Quatrelles and we follow his on his pilgrimage to Thenay. At the R4 international event we see an incredible range of R4s in all shapes and colours gather together to celebrate half a century of the third best-selling car of all time and France's favourite four wheeler.

Best car I ever had - even remembering its UK registration - PAO 702R. It was red, with a black interior. High road clearance, door opening to a flat floor - no awkward sill. Carried my rocking chair (and other stuff) from England back to Scotland in December 1979. The chair stood upright! Such was the excellence of the interior's configuration. Nothing as loveable or charming since.

OMG We had a renault 4 when I was a teenager. I learned to drive in it. I'll never forget it. We bought it from a travelling circus clown. You could fit about 10 people into it. I think it was tricked-up. We used to park it on a busy city street and have people just pour out of it. It always collected a crowd of amazed passersby. The back of the car had no windows and had circus pictures painted on the side. People always thought we were part of a circus. It was a lot of fun!

I had a yellow, pre-loved 4GTL and loved it too, it was great for going shoppping or on a camping weekend. This documentary really grabbed my attention, and I would happily drive an R4 anywhere, just for the fun of it. Cars were simply made back then, and easy to fix, so we weren't obliged to go to consult a 'garagiste' about the 'onboard computer'. Rust was the big enemy, but when I got a 25GTX in the early nineties, I discovered that Renault had beaten that problem. (What a pity the music here drowns out the commentator much of the time).

So with us in Germany, the R 4 was the car which was most preferred by small craftsmen and small traders, as small grocers and also bakeries were preferred. It was cheaper than a VW bus and more spacious than many small trucks from German production. The small Renault was also popular with hunters when the SUV era began and from Japan came the first small Suzuki four-wheel drive. Of course, there were already four-wheel-drive cars for a long time, but they were usually very expensive and had virtually no comfort on the road. Although the R 4 had no all-wheel but he was light and therefore exceptionally off-road, where he also had the necessary ground clearance for such cases. Unfortunately, the rust was the biggest enemy of this very good car. The engine, as small as it was, was indestructible and the suspension legendary. Even today you can see him, mostly in the warm season, on the street and at vintage car meetings. Although the R4 was a French car, it was also a German because you saw him earlier in masses in town and country. It is supposed to give a new R4 soon, I hope that he comes very close to the old R4 if it should be produced, I think he would then have a real change to conquer the hearts of the Germans.

Definitivamente un auto iconico. Nunca tuve uno pero creci con ellos. Algunos amigos tuvieron R4's.

I had a white one when I was a student (such a long time ago 😭). I loved it even the odd gear change. Sadly the floor fell out through rust , I got it welded up and was still able to sell it on, indestructible cars 👍 I am into EVs these days so let's have a new electric one please

I like the way they transported them down the river after production. Was that the rust activation system. I owned a very early one with 3 speed and 6 volt electrics. It was too old to be honest and in poor condition. I worked in a Renault dealership in my school holidays so I got used to polishing R4,8,10, 12 and 16 before delivery. I wanted a 16TS......or an Alpine of course.....

Agreed. If Fiat and VW make nostalgic versions of the 500 and Beetle respectively Renault would be on a winner with a 21st century version of this. Although I still prefer the 2cv over this, the R4 should be given a second chance. If they need pointers Renault could look at the Nissan PAO.

5:20 hope i misunderstand, but the R4 WASN'T the first PRIVATE car with forward drive - Citroen Traction Avant was. 2CV was the first affordable one with front drive. and i think Renault makers envisioned this car after studying the 2CV's market shortcomings.

Renault cars are very Unreliable. And Nissan's reliability has suffered now that the two companies have partnered.
