      Just look up the salt to cabbage ratio, work it real good until it forms a brine and let it sit in cool damp place like basement covered with cloth. Check every day to scrape mold off top. Lots of good videos on it, worked my first try and still in my root cellar in a big crock after 5 months, just scoop it out as needed.

    First time planting a fall/winter garden. This is a new plot. Soil PH was 5 add 200 lbs pelleted lime late summer. Planted broccoli,cauliflower,Brussels sprouts,Romaine lettuce,spinach carrots, and onions late Oct/ early Nov. Slow growing. Have harvested some lettuce so far. I watch the row by row show on how fertilize broccoli,cauliflower,cabbage and Brussels sprouts but I was late starting that recommendation. Would like to see more shows like that one on some more crops with the poster cards. Hopefully when the weather improves it will get a jump start. I plan to take a soil sample in a few weeks. Thanks Travis tell Greg after Thursday Row by Row he is the CATS MEOW !!

    That broccoli looks good to me.
    I lost all of my broccoli, cabbage and lettuce in the single-layer hoop house in mid Dec. We had 40+ mph winds that blew it over combined with single-digit temperatures. In short, it froze hard. My double layer hinged house made it through and I pulled some carrots a few days ago for soup. Being outside Chicago, lucky to have anything growing outside at this time of year. :)

      I like the stalks too. Last year I grew green skinned kohlrabi (gigante variety) and some got up to 2kg in size. My favourite way to eat kohlrabi is to eat the white flesh raw. It's very similar in taste to broccoli stalk. So, if you like broccoli stalks I'm sure you would like raw kohlrabi. Not commonly found in supermarkets though.

      @@gailpetchenik3048 powdery mildew is super easy to control. Mix whole milk to water about 1:3 (milk:water) spray it all over your plants and it’ll kill the PM. Milk is alkaline and will raise the pH of the leaf surface and prevent the PM from taking over. You’ll have to respray if rain washes the milk off, but if inside a greenhouse, you generally can get away with only spraying 1-2 times per crop season.

    Question about soil health. This will be our 3rd year in our raised garden beds. While we have had success, some plants just aren't doing as well as we hoped. We're in N. Texas, zone 8a. We sent off soil samples for testing this winter. Texas A&M does soil tests for all our counties. The results came back high in phosphorus. The recommendation was to add nitrogen and avoid adding compost for several years. I'm confused about the compost part but did add some blood meal. Is it possible to plant nitrogen fixing cover crops under tomatoes, peppers and okra plants to help build the nitrogen in the soil? That way we don't miss out on growing some of the veggies we love? Also our pH was measured at 7.9. What would you suggest for bringing that down a little closer to 7 or a little acidic.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'll actually want the pH to be between 6.0-6.5 for most all vegetables. Raising pH is pretty easy with lime, but lowering pH can be tough. Cover cropping will certainly help, but not sure you want to grow the cover crop among your vegetable plants. The cover crops will likely grow faster than the vegetables, and you'll have to find some way to mow them to keep them manageable. And they'll also likely go to seed before the vegetable crops are done, so you'll have to incorporate them into the soil while the vegetables are growing.

    Do you look at long term seasonal weather forecasts in determining your plantings? Is reliable water something you have to consider?

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We plant most everything on drip tape, so water is not a huge issue. The drip tape conserves water and puts it at the plant roots, right where they need it. We don't really pay that much attention to the long-term forecasts. You'll have good years and not so good years, but we just roll with the punches.
