- This is a full walkthrough of exactly what I did to take out half of my top bunk and use the other half as shelving. It's not too hard of a job and only requires a couple tools:
Screwdriver, Drill, Circular Saw and/or oscillating tool, straight edge, pencil, nailer of sorts (either a brad nailer or finishing nails)
Cost: Best part! It doesn't cost hardly anything! Here's what I bought!

Scott, Great job, my wife has been talking about doing this but I'm very hesitant to remove any lateral support. If I do this (which I probably will.... I'll leave the outside 2x2's like you did and dress them somehow (the contact paper looked nice). I'm wondering how sturdy that hollow cut edge will be, it looked like it was sagging just a bit without load. I would fill in those gaps with the scrap 2x2 from the demo or new filler (maybe even 2x4 for stability. I like putting angle brackets in the corners to add stability as well. I removed our U dinette so had an idea about how easy the demo would be, I just didn't want to compromise any structural integrity but I see from your video that shouldn't happen. Thanks for creating a project for me.... 😎. Oh well I'll be installing a door window this weekend so I guess I have another project.
The oscillating multi-tool is one of the handiest tools in my carpentry kit... Use that more than anything else in my arsenal. I'll check out your channel. As a 50+ year old dude I totally appreciate your comment about 20 somethings making it look easy... 🤣
Thanks for the comment! I actually chatted with my wife about the support. Once we take it out a couple times and the boy puts his clothes up there we will reassess if it needs some more support I'll add a deck board or one of those pre-primed white bass boards underneath. I think it should be good as is as long as he doesn't use it as a monkey bar, but time will tell lol!
Does doing this removal have any affect on the structural integrity of the walls. In other words does this bunk also act as a stabilizer for the walls
The piece of wood that holds the bunks up is nailed into the wall studs so I'm not thinking so. I haven't had any troubles at all, it's been great!
What is the batter tool that you used to cut the wood and nails?
That is an oscillating tool... one of the best tools I've EVER bought! They are amazing!
If it were me I would replace that piece of base trim on the shelf edge with a 1x2 or 1x3 and pocket screw it to the wall at each end and through each support to provide some structure. I could see how much the center gave. Travel trailers bounce a lot and over time that shelf may fail. You could wrap it in the same shelf wrap, or a piece of vinyl like the factory.
