Hi Superdan, was wondering if you would still recommend this camera today ? (6+ months after your original review). I am looking for a self-stabilizing 4K camera.
At 4k you get image stabilization only at 25fps. Depending on your application, this may work but for fast moving footage like bike rides or drone videos, 25fps is not enough. I use mine at 4k when I want to take footage of slow moving objects like my Cozmo robot videos on this channel. For anything else, I use the 1080p mode with image stabilization but you get 60fps. Nice Review! Interesting that there is NO FoV adjustment. But watching your footage the H6s has a large crop in with EIS stability, so you are likely at an effective FoV of 140-150.
Yah, I was a little disappointed with not being able to adjust the FOV since in some situations I like to have LINEAR. Comparing the EKEN with the Session footage, I would say that the EKEN has an effective FOV of around 140. There is nothing in the manual about that.
I also did a test with a friend and we think the FOV is around 140. Remember that the bigger the FOV the smaller the objects will look. For the footage I do, a FOV of 170 is too wide. I would actually prefer around 120. But again it depends on what you want to shoot.
I tested it by placing the camera on a piece of paper, then marking the limits of view on the paper then measuring it with a protractor. The LCD display is a little narrower than the actual recording, and EIS is again narrower still. From what I can make out, the field of view for non EIS is around 110 (unless I've measured it wrong). The hero 5 session has a 118 fov (gopro.com/help/articles/Question_Answer/HERO5-Session-Field-of-View-FOV-Information) and you can see in your comparison the eken is narrower.
You intrigue me! So I decided to do the same test as you did on my workbench using a big 10 inch protractor. At 4K 30fps, no EIS, I get a FOV of 130 degrees (close to the 140 I had mentioned before). At 4K 25fps with EIS and at 1080p 60fps with EIS, I get 110 degrees.
I got my EKEN H6s a few days ago. I have a few questions. a) Is there a setting for the FOV lens angle? b) When I tested mine, the video was rather dark. Is there automatic exposure correction or do we have to set it manually? c) Every time we change the battery, we need to reset the DateTime. I use the Ez-ICAM application to sync with my mobile phone but that's several steps. Is there an easier way to do this? Overall I am quite pleased with the camera. The video quality is good for the price.
Yes the quality is very good for the price. Unfortunately there is no setting to change the FOV. The footage in my video is with the Exposure set at the default of "0" and it works very well for me. You can change it manually in the settings. Try that. I have no problem with the date and time with my camera so this could be a specific problem with yours or perhaps the battery was discharged too much. I have this problem with my ActiveON cam. I never use the App. I have two other cameras including a GoPro and I find that the Apps never work very well, so I gave up on that. Thanks for watching!

The data transfer rate at 4k is huge so you need a very fast card. If I recall correctly, the sticker that was on the camera screen said 80MB/s minimum. I am using a Sandisk 98MB/s and things are going well. Be careful, the transfer rate given in specs is often READ. You need fast WRITE. Thanks for watching!

Hi thanks for the review. Can you recommend a free video editing software that supports the eken files? I have this camera but it appears hitfilm does not support it as the output video contains uncompressed audio. It will only import if I run a conversion on the video to compress audio. Thanks
There are a few free video editing software but as far as I know, they all have watermarks on the finish production. Windows Movie Maker is also free and DOES NOT have watermarks. It also opens EKEN files without problems but it is a limited software. Personally, I bought Power Director 15 a while ago and I use it without any problems with my GoPro and EKEN files so I can recommend this software from my own experience. You could wait for a good deal from Cyberlink and buy that. Thanks for watching!
I am not an expert in dashcam since I never shopped for one! However, I think that a typical dashcam will cycle back in recording when the memory card is full. The EKEN will simply stop recording I think. I have not tested this feature but I am pretty sure it stops. Also, due to its design, the camera body gets quite warm when it is recording so I don't think it would be good for this type of camera to be ON all the time. I am sure there are other reasons so perhaps somebody who knows more about dashcams will join this conversation. Thanks for watching!

Yes of course the battery is removable! Silly me, I have so many cameras that I was looking at the wrong one. The EKEN H6s has a battery door at the bottom.
Yes it is the Ez iCam App. The manual says "Lets you control your camera remotely using a smartphone or tablet. Features include full camera control, live preview, photo playback and sharing of select content and more". I never tested the App since I really don't have use for it and my video review was getting long enough. The camera has a preview screen, I playback on my PC, I don't share pictures from this cam and there is a remote control included anyway! Thanks for watching!

Yes at 4K recording the camera gets a little warm because of the intense video processing that takes place. But my GoPro Hero5 Session actually gets warmer! Are you going to buy the EKEN?
If money is not an issue... get the Gopro Hero5 or the new Hero6. Superior specs and better build quality. If you want to spend 4 times less and still get a decent camera, get the new EKEN H6s. If you want to spend even less, like half of the EKEN, get the Activeon DX. It is made in Korea but lacks EIS. Considering value for money though, I think the H6s is the best value at the moment, but again, do not expect the build quality of the Hero. I hope this helps a little. Mine is blurred underwater. Apparently it's because the case has a curved lens cover. Anyone else confirm this? It's probably a design mistake because this is spoken about for over 2 years.

I agree but the problem is in perceived quality value. This Eken was $100 CAD. The GoPro Hero5 Black is currently on sale in Canada for $400... That's four (4) times the Eken... Depending on your needs, you could buy two Eken for half the price of the GoPro and do acceptable multicam videos for your channel. I do that all the time with my videos on Cozmo the robot. So that's the problem with GoPro, the HUGE price differential. I have heard recently that sales of GoPros are not as good as they used to be. The arrival of MUCH cheaper action cameras like this Eken might be one of the reasons. Thanks for watching!

I bought it and i used it underwater . After arond 12M all the buttons in the waterproof casing was stuckd. I tried several times, same issue.
The specs say 30m but I never believed that. I would say in practice you would get 10m and your test seems to confirm that. Thank you for sharing!

No it does not. It records blocks of 1 or 5 minutes and then restarts automatically. I tested mine to make sure. I hope this helps. Cheers!

How long I can record continuously?
It records clips of exactly 5 min. After that it re-starts automatically. This can be adjusted to 1 min or 5 min in settings. Thanks for watching!
