"Why did this happen, specifically with each other?" Well, she is a priestess, and she wished as a joke to become a Tokyo boy in her "next life", under a sacred gate (kinda like involuntarily praying in front of a cross). And when she met him, they were connected by the "red string of fate" (that you can see briefly at 27:40).
Also, her family being prone to this kind of connections is a plus.
It goes deep in eastern spirituality. Just like love transcending time and space (a more "worldwide" concept). Or the whole twilight thing, kinda like the meaning behind Halloween.
"How is it possible?" well, magic, or.. Musubi. Given that the place got hit by a meteor twice, it must be a magic hotspot.
Oh, all Shinkai movies are connected, so it could be a happy ending, or maybe we'll see them in another movie fighting 🤣

Her name is みつは so technically you're right. The line she drew is too long for the sing み. Sing su has a longer line indeed and word suki (すき) means to like which is the word Japanese use for confessions.

​@@rookieintown6092In this movie, the grandma is named 一葉 (Kazuha with the kanji meaning One Leaf), the mother is named 二葉 (Futaba with the kanji meaning Two Leaves), the heroine(?) is named 三葉(Mitsuha with the kanji meaning Three Leaves) and the sister is named 四葉(Yotsuha with the kanji meaning Four Leaves). So if Mitsuha writes her name with kanji, it would remind us of her relationship with her family. Of course, the relationship is not directly related between Mitsuha and Taki. The pronunciation is more important for Taki.

You should check out the director's other movies if you want a movie very similar but a completely different experience watch the movie called weathering with you, there's also two other movies that I recommend that he made one called Garden of words and the other called 5 cm per second
Also in weathering with you there is a Easter egg for your name
