  • Finally finished my 24th sketchbook! This one was definitely a change of pace. I did less floating pinterest heads, and finally started taking the leap into figuring out some of my own stuff.
Btw, when I talk about finding my “style”, I’m not necessarily talking about finding the most perfect, original art style to use for the end of time. I’m more talking about developing my ability to draw figures on my own with little to no reference. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with using reference, but I want to be able to draw my ocs or fanart on my own without having to pull from something so preexisting, if that makes sense? I wasn’t sure how else to refer to it than “style”

Something I noticed in your style, is you do the shoulders very narrow. It could be what’s bothering you, though I kind it kind of cute! The long face+narrow shoulders creates an interesting, distinctive look.

You’re right! I think I also draw heads too big in general lol. Thank you!

Honestly its really interesting to see how you tried to develop this and i do think you succeeded. I am someone whose work is very stylized due to the fact i mostly draw in school and not much outside of it and i don't have a reference 99% of the time i draw nor do i have many artists that i think my style would be attached to (though if i looked i'd probably be able to find a few). I think most of your art does feel very 3D to me and i do think you do downplay your skill because you are used to having that skill and are constantly striving for better. My art is very flat due to how cartoony it is and I'm trying to fix that. Art, its a skill that never stops improving if you don't stop doing it. I like that you are taking advice like 'make bad art' It can really be freeing to take that kind of advice. Due to my personal lack of using reference over the years i have difficulty drawing realism and making it actually look like the people i am drawing. And you are someone who does achieve that very well despite the fact you don't realize it. Keep going with these rough sketchbooks don't feel pressured to make these aesthetic or whatever cause i barely touch my actual sketchbooks end up using diaries used for schedule planning for art because im too afraid of ruining expensive materials. I think you are an amazing artist and yo should keep that in mind. Where you struggle in some areas you absolutely flourish in many. Figuring out your style takes years and i dont think i could give you any advice you haven't already heard all im gunna say is keep going you are doing better than you think you are.

ok so you dont really mean style, you mean you want to develop a solid technique where you do not always need ref photos?? the knowledge to draw from your imagination comes from A LOT of practice using references to get right proportions so just keep doing what you are doing until it becomes second nature basically, which could take years or months, no set time line for it to happen😀

Yess you summed it up perfectly! I wasn’t sure how to easy refer to it and while editing I realized that I definitely wasn’t explaining myself well lol.
It’s very comforting knowing that it really is just practice. When people talk about drawing every day like how I’m doing, there’s a lot of critics that say “if you’re not drawing the right way there’s no point you won’t improve” and I think I got scared lol, so that’s why I’ve been trying so many different learning techniques. In my current sketchbook, I have focused much more on just practicing and looking at my references with more intention, like breaking things down into shapes and noticing patterns, and I think I’ve noticed the most improvement from that :]

you dont have to draw EVERY day, you can take a break every once in a while 😜 breaking down what you are drawing is usually the best way to learn, you def seems like you are on the right track to get where you want to artistically 😀
