I do agree with the general message of the video but also want to extend it a little bit. As someone who doesn’t like being publicly perceived and doesn’t post on social media anymore but art is still my sole source of income. Just because you aren’t happy or satisfied with your art doesn’t mean it’s not worth selling or applying for jobs. I’ve lost out on a lot in sales due to perfectionism when stuff I made back in 2016 still earns money. I may hate my art but something that’s helped me still move forward is the belief that I am bad at art, and have just tricked people and companies into paying for it. The better I got, the more I improved, the less happy I got with my work, but as soon as I started to believe I was scamming people into thinking I was good enough to pay it became a lot easier to do the work. I’ve lost out on a lot of opportunities and a lot of money because I believed I wasn’t good enough, I’ve taken successful products off my stores, skipped follow up interviews, and passed up opportunities because it wasn’t happy with my own work. And while I still struggle with perfectionism I’d like to caution others to learn from my mistakes. You may not be the very best like no one ever was, but you still deserve to be paid
Thank you very much for the insight on this! As a fellow creator who's not of the "wants to be perceived" sort I resonate with your message a lot. I'm still struggling with getting jobs but now I have a lot more hope for the future than I did before reading your thoughts!
Exactly. And I just want to add that I worked in the industry for a decade before I even tried to build a “social media” presence. So there are tons of us working artist who work in different ways. I draw primarily environments in blue sky concept phase of film & games.
Personally i just like to think of it as myself being a HORRIBLE judge of my artistic quality. We never look at others art the way we do our own and even if we did, we couldn't understand fully why the artist did what they did. So there's no real point in playing judge on it, if people want to buy the art, well they clearly hold value in it, art has no inherent value then that of the person perceiving it.
I am working on a short five page manga. I was feeling descuraged because the frames were repetitive and simple. but i feel very conected to the characters. I was going to not post it once I was done with it, but now I think I might. Thank you.
For me, I think Hanacue does a really good job at this. She's funny and entertaining, but her work is also beautiful and her storytelling is just amazing 🥰
24:30 THE WAY I IMMEDIATELY PERKED UP WHEN YOU MENTIONED KAFKA- I was not expecting this at all but it made me so happy, I love Franz Kafka and I connect with him and his works on many levels, so to hear one of my favourite artists and TH-camrs talking about another interest of mine injected me with so much serotonin :')
Another big thing for trying to get into industry work is that you need to show whatever company you're applying for that you can match the style of their existing IP. You can show them the most gorgeous paintings they've ever seen with the highest skill achievable. But if you can't match their existing art style, you're not getting the job. Sauce: Experience and word from industry artists on TH-cam.
This was a great video. As someone with little to no audience, establishing personal connections is something I greatly struggle with. This is mostly due to the fear of rejection (yes I know it’s something I shouldn’t be so scared of). It also doesn’t help that I tend to be very socially anxious. It feels like to me that there’s no reliable guideline to figure out how to establish these connections. Plus, It’s so hard to get people to pay attention to your craft. Also, about the silly doodles; I never really do the silly personal doodles mainly because it’s something I’m not keen on doing often even though I know it gets more attention. Anyways, I learned so much from this video.
that last bit abt being brave enough to put it out there, to do something no one else has done, makes me think about ONE and their works.!! i havent seen one punch or versus but MOB PSYCHO.. OMG.. me js talking abt it really won't do it justice but there's really something magical about how visceral, real, heartwarming and heartwrenching the characterization of mp100's world is that like ive literally become a better person just from watching it?? POINT IS!! if youve seen ONEs art style a lot of it is not conventionally attractive in the way that a lot of other mangas are. but DAMN do they know how to write a damn good story, and their unconventional art style shines in panels of incredible weight and makes me laugh in the funny panels. its really no wonder why theyre so acclaimed, and i feel like their work inspires me to not be so perfectionist about my work - just telling a story is fine too, regardless of technical ability
like, if i were to list just one example, mob is so full of genuine compassion, whimsy and joy - but at the same time his powers had made him so genuinely terrified, making him rethink his entire moral structure and values in life multiple times. but he always strives to be ultimately kind because thats what reigen taught him and. oh my god i literally love this series so much HSKDJGH
ive had a pretty following on tiktok for a while, so its been extremely debilitating when ive been at a stalemate for a while with my posts being seen, even on other social media. despite the effort i put in, it feels like im seen less and less. though, your videos always make me feel a bit better about everything, since you always give pretty good advice. keep up the great work! ^^
I'm gonna push back on the comic point a bit. In order for your comic's story and characters to be the main draw, a significant amount of people have to actually read a good chunk of it. How are you gonna entice them to do that if the art itself is just kind of meh? Something has to draw them in in the first place.
Sometimes subject matter is enough. Like if you post a comic about wolf on site where there is a lot of people who love comics about wolfs will read it even if art itself looks bad. Even on TH-cam there is an hour long film done in Paint with terrible art skills , but people love only because it is about magical wolves
Honestly, this video has finally given me the push to start actually start thinking about the things I post in a smart way and not give up on posting art at all >:D Ty for this
Sorry you got a weirdo when reading. Sometime those people are great, but other times... Anyway, thank you for this video, it made a lot of things I've seen make sense. I think that that emotional connection isn't just applicable in art or marketing, it's also part of how some people (IRL) have almost inexplicable popularity.

Brother, recently I realized that a lot of AI better from today is a lot better than my own drawings, and is also getting really hard to find the difference between human art and ai art. I know 2 accounts on Twitter that I feel like 95% is made with AI and another account that has been the first art channel on Twitter has made me ponder if it was made with AI or with human hands. The reason is that the artists has showed video timelapses of some of his drawings and I as an artist know for a fact that the fucking drawing looks legit and the process also looks legit from the draft till the rendering. Still, some of the art from the artist has a lot of mistakes that are similar to some ai art so it has completely fucked up my mind. Anyways, I am really loving some of the AI art that some twitter accounts are making, and it's getting almost on par with some of the best south Korean or Japanese artists I follow on Twitter and that is fucking scary. Design-wise is still far behind from the pros, but illustration-wise? It's getting really close. Also, a lot of people do not notice the small mistakes that AI art is making in some of those Twitter accounts and think they're legit, but only some artists with a lot of experience can see those small mistakes (like some parts of the clothing design). And also, there are those AI Twitter art accounts that dont hide it and are getting some amazing fucking art and that is the reason people are subbing or getting commissions from them (accounts with above 500k followers on twitter). Other AI art accounts are also getting a really quick number of followers on Twitter, but they're getting better at hiding the mistakes and are also using Japanese or korean names to make it seem legit. Anyways, I am really fucking scared of AI art in 1 or 2 years from now on.
😂 Oh hunni… be careful reading Kafka in public. Or Marx. Actually any “intellectual” material, unless u want to discuss it. Idk why this is the case, but it’s viewed as an invitation
yk how there's digital brushes for chains, grass, and other patterns that take a long time to do manually? this is the same type of thing: she's cycling through a brushpack of background element brushes, with stamps of things like trees and buildings, before selecting some to use in her background. this way she doesn't have to paint them manually
