Today, on this very special episode of The Ranveer Show, we welcome Robin Uthappa. He is a former Indian cricketer who is known for his aggressive batting style and ability to score quick runs. He has represented India in both One Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20 Internationals. Uthappa has also played for various domestic teams in India, including Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy and Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

*Changing captains is not a new thing in franchise cricket. The problem is the way it was done. After the world cup, the Indian team especially Rohit got fans' sympathy. And this sudden captaincy change without any transition phase made Hardik the villain*

Firstly, Ricky Ponting wasn't REMOVED by Mumbai Indians from captaincy. Ricky himself went upto the management and VOLUNTEERED to step down & drop himself from the playing XI. Much like Gambhir did in 2018 for DD when Iyer was appointed the captain later.
Secondly, MI didn't "LET HARDIK GO" in 2022 mega auctions. It was Hardik who HIMSELF WANTED to leave when he got the offer from GT where he would be the captain and all. So cut down the crap of "Hardik feeling bad" because he was more than happy. If one watches football, he/she can understand it better by relating it to the Neymar to PSG transfer.
Thirdly, while you can still somewhat question Rohit's performance as a batter over the last 4 years, stop the bullshit of him not being upto the mark as a captain. It was MI's stupid 2022 auction when they splurged 15.25 Cr on Ishan Kishan only to end with mediocre domestic bowlers. Not to mention the 8 crores wasted on Jofra Archer when he wasn't even gonna be available for the whole 2022. The season right after, Bumrah, Jhye and Jofra after 3-4 matches weren't available and with arguably the worst bowling attack in the tournament, Rohit led the team to a 3rd place finish. 2021, MI were just one place short of the playoff spot as they finished 5th, 2020 they were the winners. So there's no way you can call out Rohit as a captain even one bit.
You want to create the narrative and gain sympathy for HARDIK....that's perfectly alright! BUT don't call out the public saying that they create narratives and misunderstand Hardik, because the public is well aware of the facts unlike you who is either unaware or just manipulates them.

I guess Robin missed the 4th perception, that of the fans.
Fans don't always rate players on statistics alone, they also value the impact of the player. Impact on team, outcomes, game in general, fans' emotions, etc. Some players, even with average performance win hearts of millions. Whereas, someone with exceptional talent may still stuggle to connect with fans.
Unfortunately, even MI didn't take this into consideration. Yes, MI fans are upset because their beloved captain was sacked (Yes, he was sacked), but most are mature enough to understand that change is inevitable. Unfortunately, there are some other issues which have irked the fans.
1. The way this transition happened, it was reminiscent of corporate takeover and not a respectful passing of the baton.
2. They didn't consider the existing loyal MI players for captaincy and chose to go with someone who was not a part of the team anymore. I say loyal because someone like Bumrah, who is injury prone too, will break all records if he ever enters the auctions. But he has stayed with MI and fans would've liked that loyalty to be rewarded.
3. Of all the players outside, MI opted for Hardik. Now, why does that bother MI fans? Well, Hardik is a fantastic player and in the Indian jersey, he is loved by most. But many MI fans were disappointed with his sly digs at MI in recent times and hence, they were shocked to see him back in the team, let alone become the captain.
Besides the above, many fans are still not convinced about the decision itself. Nevertheless, the mocking and trolling is just not fair and must stop. While fans have a right to their opinion, uncivilized behaviour is just not acceptable.
Guess this is not the end though. Let's just wait for the next Mega auction, there might bigger surprises in store for us.

You are choosing to play in front of an audience, no one is forcing you to do so. One can certainly imagine how it might feel when the world is against you and criticising you, but it is you who is chose to be in front of a camera and be judged. No one is asking you to respond or prove the world wrong, but you do need to acknowledge what's going around. I remember once when Sunil Chettri requested on social media for people to come to stadiums to watch their games, cricket takes their audience for granted.

Very eloquent commentary from Robin. Interesting to listen. But I have several observations.
1. Mumbai Indians team management - It was a blunder to still have Rohit in the team but not have him as the captain. Can you imagine Steven Gerrard being at Liverpool and someone else wearing the arm band? Doesn't make sense.
2. To the manjrekers and the uthappas who are asking the fans to behave and be sensible, always remember fans are the guardians of the game, they are the real boss. They travel to the game, spend the money and cheer for their team not because they are sensible but because they are passionate. Don't ask them to drop their passion, they are entitled to have their opinion, their favorites, their cheers and their boos because they are the ones paying the player their fees, not the owners. The sport is nothing without the fans and their raw passion. All of you will be out of work if the fan becomes so sensible that he thinks "why should I waste my time and money seeing a guy hit a leather ball with a piece of wood?". While abuse is not okay, give them their space for expression. If Micheal Owen comes back to anfield, he will be booed and that's the beauty of a sport.
Mumbai Indians took professional decision, Hardik Pandya took professional decision and now time will come when Rohit Sharma will take professional decision to lead any other franchise.
I agree with Robin but if you want to look forward for future then surya and bumrah are much more better options as captain compared to hardik.

Robin cleverly didn't shed light on hardiks performance during the same period he talked about rohits😅 clearly he is a fan of hardik. Hardik was let go by the franchise because he was performing worse than rohit, which hurt his egos and thats why he put a condition that he will return only if made captain, probably to salvage his pride at expense of others(rohits and fans) thats the part which people didn't like.

Hey Robbie, Nobody is questioning what Hardik has done for the country and for both the franchises, Rohit bhai may not have scored big runs in IPL but the way he has lead an amateur team with many New comers since the addition of new teams is commendable. The only question people/fans ask is did Rohit Bhai deserve this kind of treatment? Couldn't MI management talk to Rohit bhai just like Ricky Ponting gave his captaincy to Rohit bhai in the middle of the tournament?
Following things:
1) Rohit was made captain midway. MI backed it in 2013. Reason: Lot's of losses. Has it not happened in any other franchise ? It has and it is CSK. Jadeja lost and MSD became the captain midway. His comment: We want Jaddu more as a player than as a captain. Mahi was right, him as a player is more important than anything else.
2) Hardik has a brittle body. Hardik is in the Indian team as a all rounder and not for his batting. The old Kung fu pandya is now missing since 4 years. If he has to be in the T20 squad, then it will be as an all rounder only and nothing else. We are losing him as all rounder because he wants to exert a lot of force on him. Why? Robbie answered it: He wants to get financially better in the shortest possible time.
3) MI in 2023: Every one post the auction said this team cannot reach the playoffs because of the bowling line up. Bumrah and Archer never happened. The team did reach the playoffs and you know why. They showed a lot of players who could handle the team. That showed the backing and no fan criticized them as everyone knew it.
4) On the corporate people comment: you need to be more responsible. You guys are getting paid just because of the criticism indirectly. (The amount of people watching makes the game more money minters which eventually leads to criticism).
5) MI didn't give captaincy to Bumrah or SKY but to Hardik who told they got best players and had the best players. Fan's started against Hardik since then not after the captaincy. Rohit's comment outside was also that they made those players. There are lot's of talents. Recognizing and grooming them to play till international level is what IPL is for.
It will be Hardik's MI in 2025. Knowing Bumrah, he will also not get retained in this franchise (for the very same reason what you gave for Hardik). Been the 3rd retention since a long time and the guy who hopped corporates has got a better position. Deal with it MI management.
2025 is going to be a new in lot of ways. Rohit, Virat will be seen in limited cricket (MS possibly no) and brand's won't pour in so much money for the rest of the guys. Transition from MS to Virat was easy but from Rohit to next is going to be the most difficult part of ICT to be dealt.

Who had to do it.?? there is another franchise CSK where last year they tried Jaddu and in the middle of the season they gave it back to MSD. and in this year he "MSD" gave the captaincy to Ruturaj.. they also have a huge fan base.. they ddnt say anything.. they understood. why.. coz it was not badly put forward by the management.. by the players. by MSD by rutu..

MI won 5 out of 11 years in which Rohit was captain, TOTAL 7 Playoff appearances so only 4 failed IPLs. But MI management out of the blue treated him like he is a washed up captain.
If rohit decides to leave now every team would want him to be the captain. MI team was very well constructed this year, if this drama didnt happen, I think he would have won one more trophy . When Rohit Sharma became captain after Ponting, Mumbai Indians (MI) wasn't doing well, and both Ponting and Sachin were retiring. But Rohit led MI to success over the years, so it might have been the wrong process for MI to give the captaincy to Pandya instead of Rohit. The way MI did it didn't sit well with Indian cricket fans. They see Pandya as a villain now because they think he got the captaincy in the Gujarat Titans team and returned to MI for money, even though Rohit was already there. Unlike CSK, where the captaincy transition from Dhoni to Ruturaj was smooth, MI could have handled it better, and now Pandya is facing the backlash for it.
Taking away the captaincy and passing it on are different things. MI management might not have understood this difference.

I'm sorry but I don't agree with Robin Uthappa Sir. He asked is there anything wrong in Hardik Pandya wanting to come back as a captain because he had a two year successful run at GT. Ranveer answered as "No". Surely, it might not be wrong to ask that but as a player he is well aware who is being snatched off that captaincy for him to get it. So, if he really wants to come back as captain he should also be aware of the backlash of the indian audience.
Robin Uthappa also pointed out, quite beautifully, about the three perspectives individually. The thing is Hardik is also aware of the other two perspectives. He is not just thinking about himself.
Also, Handing captaincy from ricky ponting(last stage of his career) to Rohit is very different from handing captaincy from Rohit(Current INDIAN Captain, 5 time IPL winner) to Hardik.
My point is Hardik is right for thinking for himself but he should also be aware and be okay with the people's reaction. You got to take the good with the bad.

There is a 4th angle which is most important: that of being an Indian. Today, the Captain of India is not the Captain of the IPL team - and this appears to be on a condition by Hardik. If thats true, it reflects badly on him both as a player and an Indian. If it isnt true, it should be on the management.
It is interesting how everybody is talking about hardik pandya being trolled but nobody is talking about Rohit sharma, a person who literally built this team, who gave all his time, talent to make Mumbai Indians reach where they are today, let's face it, leading a team to win 5 ipl titles, 2 of which were won by defending a very low score in the finals, is not easy, it's more than what many of us can even think, only a person with an extraordinary potential and understanding of cricket and a very hardworking work ethic can achieve this, for all of us, captaincy is not an issue, it's the respect you give to a captain who has given this team all that he have, who is respected by each and every member of this team, you cannot shoo him away, cannot throw him out like you are putting a fly out of milk, the management should have taken Rohit's view, should have given him proper respect, and should have chosen an appropriate time for this announcement of changing captaincy, it all happened very soon after World Cup final, when Rohit was not in a very good state of mind.
Ofcourse, the way hardik is being bullied is not good, it is disrespectful and these so called fans should be banned from stadiums, they just bring bad name to the spirit of cricket.
Captaincy and leadership changes happen all the time, but the real challenge is to make it smooth and acceptable for everyone, honestly, both hardik and Rohit are not part of this blunder, we should keep them out of it, it's the management's fault, how they dealt with this, it showed an insecure, impatient side of the management, it's not the right attitude for a 5 times champion team.
Ideally, whoever was to be chosen as the captain, should have been given atleast 2 seasons time to understand the captaincy and team mentality and approach towards the game, he should have been given time to communicate and built a rapport & mutual understanding between himself, Rohit and the team and management.
If it's managed well then leadership changes are not that tough or controversial, but this blunder is the management's fault for the most part.
Both Rohit and hardik are excellent players and human beings and we should support them , no matter what, their potential is independent from this fiasco.
