I got into HVAC when I was in my twenties. My cousin had went to school for it and loved it so I followed his foot steps. Before I could finish school my instructor saw something in me and got me on with a company. I got away from working for HVAC contractors in my mid thirties and am now a maintenance supervisor for a local apartment complex. I still have my hands in HVAC to this day.

Kinda how I got into it too. I was feeling desperate for a career change, or at least a career that I would love and make a decent living out of. I was (and still currently am) working an unfulfilling dead end light security job, after getting out of the awful grocery business for over 17 years. I was kinda entertaining the idea of getting into the HVAC world and not knowing much about it, until one day I ran into somebody who lives a few houses down from me who’s a tech, and by some weird chance was the same guy that fixed my heater almost a year earlier. I asked him how does one get into HVAC. He said something along the lines of “either with some experience, or schooling, just get out there and apply. There is a shortage of techs so it’s relatively easy to get into.” Soon after I enrolled in the HVACR program at SJVC. This was about a year ago. Some 6 months later I ran into him again and mentioned that I’m going to school for it and doing really well, and should be graduating soon. Then he said something like “yeah when you finish school, bring me a resume, and I’ll talk to the boss and try to get you in.” Fast forward a few months to present time, I’m now graduated and have my universal EPA 608 as well. Got my resume sent in and supposed to be getting an interview soon. It’s for a part time “shop guy/trainee” position, but I guess I gotta start somewhere. Btw I’m 39.

My friend who has 10 years of experience working in hvac advices me to get into refrigeration , he’s been around the block working in residential in attics and tells me it is not fun unless you work for like a mom and pop type business who will take care of you and won’t cut your throat by making commission like most big hvac companies do. He works refrigeration for a company that service the HEBs Kroger’s, walmarts and Tom thumbs and loves it! Although it’s lots of traveling he brings home lots of money and he encourages me to get my EPA universal cert on top of it. Really motivates me to get into the field, tried welding at first but the job outlook was not so great.

The one gripe I have with being an installer was loading and unloading the truck for free and not getting paid until we got to the job site and not getting paid to drive back to the shop. Which means 8 hour days turn into 11 or 12 hours a day with drive time from home and drive time to the job site.

2022 how to get a job in hvac:
Employer: "Are you currently physically alive and can you be available for on call?"
Prospective employee: "Maybe man, i dunno man, you know, I'm just tryna work, man. . ."
    Employer: "You're hired."
By the way, I didn't get into it because of family. I got into it because i learned that becoming proficient in HVAC puts you levels above most electricians and plumbers and many other HVAC techs in general. I never regret learning this trade, by the way.
Any real tradesman knows, it's not just about money, it's about knowledge. Knowledge is power, man. When a blackout happens, when you are trying to plan a homestead, when you are trying to install solar in your house. Dude, HVAC knowledge will save your life.
It sounds crazy to say but many real techs will understand this. HVAC is the punk music of the trades.

I would suggest to study a lot. A tech is like a doctor never stop studying... Yes, hands on is the best experience, but contractors doesn't care too much about you. They care about the money. They make sure you are making their money and is not being spent by you fucking up a compressor, yet they have to pay you for fucking up. You have to study pressures changes and why they changing/ subcooling superheat/ how each one of the pieces of the units and devices work and how they wired.. You have to study.. The more you know the more you get pay and the more they will do anything to keep you by their side.... Believe me study at home there are good books..

Here in the KCMO area,it seems they all want some one with at least 2 years of experience.I received my HVAC certification from Ashworth College, back in August.I have EPA Universal and NATE ready to work.Been trying to get an HVAC job for the last 16 months.
I have had interviews with at least 8 different heating and cooling companies and am still trying to get in to it,but at this point,I am starting to think if I just wasted money on that HVAC course and EPA.
A few employers said that I would start as install helper.I told them I was cool with that. They asked me if I would work over time and weekends.Yes and yes.
The interview usually ends with "I still have some more interviews to do and I'll let you know by the end of the week"
I never hear from them again.
Maybe they see my age(I am in my late 40s)and decide that I am too old and decide to go with some 20 year old with no training and has only done fast food and Uber.
I am thinking of getting certified in plumbing or electrical work and persuing a job in that industry instead.Don't know if I would have any luck.

Another one sent me a reply and gave me his number, yesterday.Called him an hour a go and no answer.Left a message.I doubt he returns my call.

Hi Greg how are you ?
New to the field, just finished trade school. What kind of smart gauges would you recommend based on your experience? I’m buying my tools n I’d like some help in deciding which 1 to buy. Thanks.

I love the Testos! I still love my analog gauges, but those Testos 550s are great.

Since this video is 2 years old the bottom line is this you cannot own a home on the salary that heating and air conditioning technicians make. The national average is 45000 a year you cannot be done you cannot raise a family on 45000 a year either.

In ny boces is about 20k for 1 year. I was better off in a technical college with financial aid. I paid about 12k for year degree. Alot of theory but not much hands on. Theory in my opinion is better hands on you get in field.

I went to UEI College in California. I graduated with a 4.0 GPA and Perfect Attendance was in the top 10 percentile from my class in June 2018. I have my EPA 608 UNIVERSAL & 410A UNIVERSAL. The only issue is I haven't had any luck in landing a job after numerous inverviews with potential employers and don't get calls on the interview. I'm from Los Angeles. I've applied multiple times for same employers. Applied for an HVAC Apprentice, Entry-level HVAC Technician, HVAC Service Technician, HVAC PMT and nothing. Is there some advice you can give me or if I'm doing something wrong? I'd appreciate hearing back from you as soon as you get a chance. Thanks in advance. By the way my age is 35. You can email me at olidm84@gmail.com. I look forward in hearing from you and talking to you.
