- Giuseppe Verdi LA FORZA DEL DESTINO "Invano Alvaro..." duetto
Firenze Teatro Comunale 14 giugno 1953 ==LIVE==
Direttore Dimitri Mitropoulos
Tenore italiano MARIO DEL MONACO (Firenze 27 luglio 1915 - Mestre (Ve) 16 ottobre1982)
Baritono italiano ALDO PROTTI (Cremona 19 luglio 1920 - Cremona 10 agosto 1995)
Both in hall of fame❤❤
Incredible as it now seems, in the 50's Protti was considered an "also-ran", someone to be used only if Gobbi, Bastianin, Merrill, etc were not available. What wouldn't we do to have a voice of his stature singing today?!
@piasecznik You neglected to mention Del Monaco's excellent phrasing&diction&piano singing in the beginning. Many great tenors took liberties when singing LIVE,Holding notes longer than usual.Corelli Volpi Gigli Fillipeschi Tucker to namea few. This is a Dramatic opera & MDM'S interpretation is fine, singing piano, mezza voce& his obvious Forte, where required, which makes the performance technically sound.I'm sure Del Monaco's B-FLATS hurt some peoples ears too. But,Iagree with You about the CLARINET
Grazie mille !!!
Mejor, imposible..BRAVI JRT
Sûrement 😁 mais il y a d'autres belles versions, notamment Corelli.
They always make fermate in parts like that. If you don't do it, people consider it as you can't hold the high note.
Sentite questi due grandi artisti in andrea chenier, giganteschi
Regarding the clarinet: Likely the fault of the tape.
With the end, yeah, you're right. Just listened to it again with the score, and that's totally on Mitropolous. That said, the "or provasti con quest'atto" is Protti's fault. It's supposed to be Allegro Agitato, without a fermata on the high note.
And I still want to know what happened to the clarinet at 7:39. I wasn't even aware they could produce a sound like that.
As far as Protti and Del Monaco are conerned, this is 1953, so one of their first collaborations.
@SHICOFF1It's definitely the tape. But the ending tempo is disastrous. :D
It's getting more and more slow motion toward the end - what's going on there. There is some loss of cohesion ...
Can you guys sing, or do you just tear down those with greater gifts than you own?
The clarinet-- make that 7:35.
The tempo is all over the place - what is the conductor doing?!
I due Leoni ruggenti
You seem to be absolutely out of understanding. Nice voices? The point was that the conductor blew up Aldo's fermata, didn't let him finish, and started "piu mosso" earlier. So DEL Monaco couldn't begin with the first beat, and then it was all mess almost till the end of the act. They sang many roles together, I hate to tell you. And this time was a great performance too dispite Mitropolus.
Mitropoulos eccezionale sempre ma non ha aspettato Protti e poi....comunque un duetto elettrizzante.
Secondo me era terribile direttore e niente di eccezionale

Concordo in pieno...voci straordinarie..ma il finale non è buono...saluti
Come mai?
WTF was 7:39? The Clarinet? Also, the end was not together at all. De Monaco tends to hang on too long to long notes usually, but in this recording Protti is even worse.
Ah la macchia del tuo stemma
Or provaaaaaaaaaaaasti con quest'atto!
??
They obviously both have nice voices. But from an interpretatory and technical point of view, this was not a very good rendition. Sounds like they first met five minutes before the curtain opened.
I wish you could go back in time and teach them how to interpret this...
What a short coming, Hanginging on to high notes too long.
Awful.

Seldom right but never in doubt!
