AS USUAL ALDO PROTTI ON VIDEO LIVE GIVES SUCH A DIRECT PERFORMANCE LEAVING IN ITS STYLE AND PRONOUNCIATION ANY MODERN BARITONE IN THE DUST! AND YET ....AT THE TIME OF THIS THERE WERE MANY OTHER GREAT SINGERS ...ESPECIALLY ITALIANS....AND NOW I FEAR THEY ARE GONE FOREVER! PROTTI RECORDED OFTEN WITH TEBALDII AND DELMONACO AND ALONG WITH THEM WE ARE LUCKY TO SEE HIM IN MANY OF HIS GREATEST ROLES!....THANK GOD FOR THE JAPANESE AND THEIR LOVE FOR REAL ITALIAN OPERA, PROTTI CREATES SPACE ARROUND THE THEATRE AND SOMETIMES HE SOFTENS THE FEARCE BRIGHTNESS OF HIS TONE.... TO A BEAUTIFUL MEZZO FORTE PIANO.... CULTIVATING THE SPECIAL MOOD .....AS VITAL AS HIS INCREDIBLE HIGH NOTES AND DRAMATIC STAGE PRESENCE! GRANDISSIMO.
I recommend, either good Headphones or a good Sound System, including a Competent Subwoofer. (As I stated in my other comment, I heard silence a minute in, which jogged my memory. Fortunately, I have the Dover Full Score and good Headphones).
This is the version with the Prelude. And it is an awesome test of your Sound System. At 1:00, you will hear silence, unless you have, either good Headphones or a good Subwoofer, because the only Instrument Playing is the one I used to play, the String Bass (aka Contrabass). This Orchestra has an excellent String Bass Section. Another reason I like the longer version is what comes a little later: 4 French Horns playing the Climax of Canio's Vesti la giuba Aria, "Ridi, Pagliaccio, sol tuo amore infranto!" Bottom line: Look for a Prolog over 7 Minutes!
Very moving interpretation by Protti, accomplished without any unnecessary histrionics. Bravo.
