Why your photos don't look good on social media...

  • Have you ever posted your photos on social media to realize that the color and contrast are nothing like the image you edited? This is probably why!
Every image consists of pixels of color made up of red, green, and blue values. As screens get more advanced, different and deeper shades of colors become available, which is made possible by different color spaces.
However, even though your screen might be able to show specific colors, it does NOT mean that the platform you upload on is capable. Most photographers edit in ProPhoto RGB by default, which has a very wide color gamut. Most social media platforms cannot show this wide range of colors, so your image will be converted to a more limited color space, which doesn't always produce the best results.
That said, if you want to retain the best color accuracy, your best bet is to export in sRGB for any social media posts!

Drats... good to know. Perhaps its worth doing both for prints and for social media. I have wondered this and why they compress the hell out of images. The "upload high res pictures" setting and using TIFFs seems to aid in the latter.

For prints you want to use Adobe RGB!

Adobe RGB if your printer can print in that color space.
