  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dismissed his top military commander. General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi had been commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces. He is regarded by many as a national hero for overseeing Ukraine's war effort since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. He'll be replaced by the commander of Ukraine's ground forces - Oleksandr Syrskyi.

Based on Syrsky's track record, this doesn't bode well. Zaluzhny was willing to cede land when and where it made sense, which is sound military decision making, but politicaly unpalatable for Zelensky. Forcing the military to hold ground at all costs is the greatest and most expensive mistake Ukraine has made, and will obviously now continue to make.

I agree. 24 and 25: Ukraine won't have that much foreign aid: Trump or not: congress is skittish. The Europeans fear Trump US will pull out from Nato in 25, so they keep the stock they have. So it should be about defending efficiently, "trading" forces at a 1 to 5 ratio in Ukraine favour, even if that means loosing ground. Flatten out "cities" are of no use to Russia anyway, so no point holding with bad ratios. Ukraine has to hold and wait for the Europeans to step up, while Russia keeps wasting forces. That's the realistic strategy.

  • @heinrichkleist3473

The counter-offensive didn't go as planned because Ukraine didn't get the right supplies in time, and because Russia had a long time to prepare its defenses. Russia also has volume on its side: their economy is on a war footing whilst the West is dithering with getting the right supplies and in the right amount to Ukraine. If the West is wondering why the Ukrainian progress isn't going well, they should look in the mirror.

Keep the tactics small in squads, armor for infantry, and surprise. If you go to full battles of trying to overrun the enemy of one on one of the enemy,at full blast, you will lose. He went on to say it is not about surnames or even more so not about politics, he went on to explain what its about. From what he said it looks to me like they are creating a better structure, command structure to go forward with. That suggests to me that the current structure was ok but not quite up to the job, the general should bow out gracefully and live to fight another day. He is popular with the people and Zelensky will be replaced one day so why not take this opportunity to aim for presidency some time in the future.

Keeping morale is more important that defeatist public statements. As for Bakhmut the sheer symbolic importance far outweighs any strategic importance. Just like the Alamo holds significant symbolic importance to the United States. They would do the same if the tables were turned.
