- Claudia Sheinbaum has swept to victory in Mexico's presidential election, making history as the first woman to hold the office. As the hand-picked successor of leftist president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the former mayor of Mexico City was always favorite to win. The president-elect faces some big challenges, including migration, relations with the United States, and the country's rampant drugs-related violence.
For more on this, we talk to Jason Marczak. He is senior director of the Atlantic Council’s Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center and joins us from Washington DC.
We talk to Arturo Sarukhan, a former Mexican ambassador to the United States and now president of the consulting group Sarukhan & Associates.
And we talk to Gema Kloppe-Santamaría. She is an Assistant Professor of History and International Affairs, at George Washington University.

Recently the USA has been trying to use the cartels as a prerequisite to invade Mexico, but I thought about it and I'm pretty sure all they want to do is steal all the drugs the cartels have like they do oil, lithium, cobalt and other resources around the world. 😂🤣

And how exactly do you propose that the US reduce it's drug consumption? This has been a major subject of public policy here for over 50 years with hard and soft approaches, neither of which have worked. I have my own opinions, but the demand is not going to stop anytime soon.

Our main problem is that USA sells weapons to the cartels and they have better weapons than Mexican forces in Mexico. And as long as they continue doing that is going to be very difficult to exterminate the cartels. The cartels are a problem that affects Mexico and USA. Unites states always talks about their people dying but what about the hundreds of Mexican people that have died and killed because united state is supplying the weapons to these criminals. When united state is going to recognize that they are the main part of the problem? When are they going to take some accountability and stop blaming Mexico only?
