- I'm delighted to share with you The Sun of Knowledge, a 13th century Arabic grimoire written by Shams Al-Maarif. Only one book of The Sun of Knowledge has been translated to English as of the date of this video. Written by Ahmad Ibn 'Ali al-Buni (D. 1225 AD), translated by Amina Inloes, and illustrated with extra commentary by J. M. Hamade.
The English translation covers letter magic; astrology, the planet and zodiac; the 28 lunar moon mansions; talismans, jinn, angels and so much more.
"Identifying as a faithful Muslim, al-Buni takes a spiritual approach towards using his will to exert material change. Primarily, he employs the names of God (the Ninety-Nine Names of Allah in the Islamic tradition) and the Arabic letters, numbers and verses of the Qur-an."
"Although the Sun of Knowledge presents itself as a single Islamicate product, it contains many layers of cultural and religious influence, including various streams from Ancient Greece, pre-Islamic Arabia, the post-Islamic Arab-Muslim Empire, and Judaism; and the lunar mansions are held to have developed in India. 'Magic Squares' - with which the Sun of Knowledge is replete - are held to have originated in China over two thousand years ago, and then to have migrated westwards. Thus, the Sun of Knowledge can be read as part of the overall human heritage of occult and esoteric thought, and not only as something limited to the Arab or Islamic world." - Amina Inloes
