    I just use normal notebooks for mine. It doesn't bother me if things are out of order because I make an index in the back so I can find pages. Also I've learnt to enjoy my mistakes, crossing things out and making new pages for things as I learn more - it makes it feel more like me and it brings me comfort BUT your setup with the binders is beautiful - love the aged pages and how neat it all looks. I think its great that we witches have different ways of doing things.

      I have so many notebooks. I do have a couple of “books of shadows” but a lot of notebooks.
      I have one book I haven’t written in yet, but I want it to be more personal and not full of a lot of stuff you can find online, but personal experience and gnosis. (Like this page 17:27 )

    I had stopped journaling and recording during a long hiatus, and have been trying to get back to it. The arthritis in my hands makes it so hard to write extensively. I have gone back to this type of grimoire, with periodic journaling for actual spell work/ life. I have always been better recording and creating on the computer, and my original (1990’s) BOS was like this - before that I wrote poetry, and I always liked keeping it on the computer. The first coven I was in encouraged us to write everything out, with good reason, but mobility should never be a hindrance to your practice. I am a big proponent of doing what works best for you.

    i used to use a binder, but then i switched to index cards in a box like you would with recipes when cooking, because i can hold a lot more information in a smaller area. i do this for those list like tidbits of information, rather than using an entire sheet of paper, i just use both sides of the index cards. i currently use a book for the longer things, but of course, you can't go back and add pages-however, i have added in pockets to the pages and then i can insert more information lol i love how you have decorated yours. the pictures are so beautiful.

    For the sigils I use for servitors I tape a piece of paper over the sigil so I can reference back to it if needed. Also instead of destroying the sigil when activating it, I put sealing wax over it meaning that I won't ever see it again unless I uncover that taped off part of the page.

    this may be the closest ive managed to come to finding an outline for starting a BoS/Grimoire! I find so many people are so worried about stifling someones personal creativity that when they do a 'how to start a BoS' video all they really do is talk about types of notebooks and how you dont NEED to make it pretty when im really just looking for a list of topics i might want to be looking into it and a logical way to start grouping them

    I am a Norse pagan and I'm going to keep a book of things which I want to explore. I have no clue if other Norse pagans do this (they probably don't, because of its association with Wicca, but it just seems right for me.) I have recently discovered that it is more like Wicca and druidry than I first thought and a book or journal would be useful for me to keep all of my ideas and research. I've found it not easy starting out on this path because there is a lot of emphasis on rituals and celebrations with other people and I'm solitary, so this seems a way forward for me. I shall probably hand write it, since I love using fountain pens and doing art with traditional mediums, but it is nice to see how other folks do things.

    • @IvyTheOccultist
      @IvyTheOccultist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is definitely harder to find a solitary path that works! I find that a lot of magical traditions are centered around group work. But I think more and more people are solitary now... Hoping you find all the information you're looking for! Also, if you enjoy art and you're good at it, then definitely hand write it!! I wish I were creative and had good handwriting... But alas, I don't. Therefore, I type it. 😂 Whatever works for you!

    • @1NaturalMystik1
      @1NaturalMystik1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      i lean more in the direction of Druidism and Shamanism, the books i keep for my "spells" consist of very little writing and a lot of art, with a little bit of creative thinking you can describe a spell by using a comic or what i prefer to call sequential art format. i do very little ritualism and mostly use rattle, drum, diddlybow for trance work to "cast" my spells. the type of books i use are sketchbooks that are easy to carry around with you, my practice consists of a lot of sitting within nature while in trance and befriending the elements, sitting with herbs/trees/water etc. hope this is helpful.

    Hiii. I feel the exact same way about not wanting to write in my Grimoire lol Mine is a drawing book, kinda like a junk journal style. I've changed my cover several times.

      Oh yes, I've definitely thought about it! But some of the information is copied word for word from books. I'd have to rewrite it all and site my sources so there's no plagiarism issues. I haven't gotten that far yet 😆 But thank you for this comment! ❤️

    I just keep a notebook on what I do, think and experience. I always thought it was kind of useless to make a grimoire because these days we have so many books we can reference. But I have to say that your grimoirs look amazing 😍 Maybe one day when I'm old and wrinkled and have all the time in the world... Although I don't believe I need to reference it at that point... But this was a very nice and interesting video to watch 😊

      Old and wrinkled 😂😂 I love it!! And I totally agree with you. I don't need a reference at this point and I hardly look at the pages anymore because I have them memorized. Lol. But it was really helpful in the beginning for sure! Thank you for your kind words. 🖤🖤

    what an inspiring work! i could sit by a fire browsing through that all night. Chaweon Koo of youtube Witches & Wine turned her BOS into an actual hardcover book titled "SPELL BOUND."

  • @cagedraptor

    I have always liked the three-ring binder idea because of the organizational structure, but for some reason I tend to use bound books anyway... don't know why. I started with the idea that handwritten was necessary for that special connection, which I drew from the earlier concepts. However, I am sure that if typewriters and computers were available at the early age of BOS's that idea would not have been as popular as it was. But I still hand write majority of what I do. BOS, in my view is not as needed as some because I do not have a set way of doing anything, for the most part. I always try to "wing it" and do what feels right at that particular moment, which in many ways makes a bos not as needed, being I am not required to "carbon copy" what I do. And as usual I avoided commenting on the video and plastered something about me, maybe I should work on that or stop commenting so much?

    I have a personal book of spells that I made, it's a small one, easy to carry - but varied. From healing spells to, protection & good fortune spells, from devastating hexes & curses to talismans & charms.
    Many of the spells I created are inspired from Ozark & appalachian folk magic, voodoo, witchcraft, brujeria and good old black magic.
    I wrote it when those spells I created & performed actually worked better than I thought to my surprise, this is when I really began to take the occult seriously.
    That grimiore of yours looks epic by the way - very detailed, even the pages look like something from an ancient tome! So dope! 🍎🐍

      Hell yeah, that sounds rad!!! When I read "Ozark & Appalachian folk magic, voodoo, witchcraft, brujeria..." I knew it would be badass! I have some personal books with rituals I have done myself but I definitely didn't want to post those on TH-cam. 😂 Keeping a record of things is so helpful!

      @@Shadowman9348 oh no, it wasn't fear that was holding me back! But I totally agree with you. I just don't want to share my personal gnosis with the entire world.😂 Maybe some day... But I like to keep my rituals private. It feels more sacred that way. Plus, a lot of my rituals require blood magick and they're pretty intense/personal. I love keeping it to myself because it's like a powerful secret! 🖤

      @@IvyTheOccultist True! I often forget the witches creed.
      1: To know
      2: To dare
      3: To will
      4: To keep silent
      5: To go forth
      I often forget this creed was put in place by our kind long ago for a reason, to protect our personal kingdom. That said I didn't mean personal studies, rites & so forth, but rather topics themselves which are occult in nature.

      @IvyTheOccultist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Shadowman9348 actually, I forgot that creed too! 😂 Well I guess I was upholding the creed without realizing. Lol. Some things are just better kept private in my opinion. But who knows... My opinion could change on that in the future! Your book of shadows, however, sounds FASCINATING. I know very little about voodoo and brujeria. I'm actually doing a collaboration with a Bruja next week to discuss brujeria more in depth. I've recently been familiarizing myself with Appalachian folk magic... It's all so interesting!
