We spent about 4k for excavation and that was renting equipment and doing it ourselves. A little south of Traverse City and 1/2 mile driveway with 250 vertical rise. Your cost is not bad. Costs add up quickly though.
I'd say excavation is a pretty good deal in Michigan. I pay that much for just a septic system. And I'm only 30 minutes from a city and not much slope.
