The Lumbar Flap in Breast Reconstruction

Dr Filip Stillaert, PhD, FCCP, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon affiliated with the University Hospital in Ghent, Belgium, gives a thoughtful and well-presented slide show that includes case studies on the lumbar flap in breast reconstruction.
Not all women are candidates for DIEP flap using the abdominal tissue and Dr. Stillaert describes the techniques he has become comfortable and quite skilled at using the "love handle" area of the back to recreate and reconstruct the breast for those facing breast cancer.
We encourage patients to watch and understand the "consistency" of this flap. We encourage surgeons and trainees to be inspired to try this flap reconstruction after Dr. Stillaet's meticulous description of this technique and his passion for microsurgery.
