MILKY WAY in the MALVERN HILLS & Alyn Wallace Starglow Filter - First Impressions

  • In this video I meet up with @astrojourneyuk and @benjarvis_photography in the Malvern Hills to take some Milky Way images. There was slightly more light pollution than I had hoped and it was extremely windy, but I managed to get a few half decent images. Let me know your favourite.
I also get the chance to test the ‪@AlynWallace‬ Star Glow filter for the first time and I was blown away by the results. You can see my first shot with this filter toward the end of the video. I'm really excited to take this filter out and get some more shots.

Thank you very much Alyn, I really appreciate it. I was amazed when I saw that first exposure pop up. I absolutely love the filter, it opens up so many cool shots. Thanks for all the amazing work and videos you create, I'm a long time watcher 👍 Clear skies and hope you have a great 2022

Lovely Milky Way shots there. Lots of very picturesque country side foregrounds to choose from by the look of things. Gosh that Starglow filter does really make the constellations jump out.

Thanks Logan, yes it really makes those bright stars pop, can’t wait to use it more 👍

Great stuff as always, Russell! That portrait-oriented image is probably my favorite, but they are all spectacular. I have lots to learn about MW landscape photography

Great little video. It was pretty windy at the top of the hill. I’m amazed any of your audio worked. Cracking images too, at least I know roughly what to aim for in terms of pulling out the detail. Thanks for the shout out! :)

Great video Russell! I love them all, but if I had to choose I'd say the very first one.

Fantastic shots! This is my home town. The stars in the sky is one of the things I miss most since moving to the city, all I see now is a sheet of black. Something I always took for granted. I hope to move back someday

Great video and images, Russell. I have that exact spot planned for the next time I’m at my in-laws, who I live just to the south east of Malvern - it’s been cloudy every time we’ve been there since April! Love the compositions.
Glad you’re experimenting with the Starglow. I’m a big fan of it. The colours it can bring out are sublime (although the yellow in Dubhe isn’t showing as much in your Plough image as I’d have expected). Using it with Cassiopeia is a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to get it out with Orion and the Winter Circle!

Thanks very much Paul, it’s a great location, I hope you can get up there soon!
Yes looking forward to using the starglow filter more. It was a very quick snap to be honest on the way back to the car, so might not have got the best settings. Also, it was just a single exposure so hopefully with more practice I can get more colour in the stars. Any tips for settings with the filter?

@@RussellsAstrophotography So far (it’s had maybe 5 outings) I’ve found it works with more or less the same settings as you’d use without it, but can take a little longer exposure or wider aperture - you don’t lose sharpness with the wider aperture as you’re unsharping it all with the filter anyway! I’ve found images seem to respond well to stacking and Sequator doesn’t seem fussed that the stars aren’t pin sharp any more. To my eye, stacking helped to bring out the colours, as did nudging the saturation slider to the right. Separate foreground exposures seem to be best, although I’ve seen some images in which foregrounds have been brought up to a very decent standard of sharpness just through post-processing; you might have the talent for that, but I definitely don’t!! 🤣
I don’t have a filter holder, so I have to wave the filter with my hand in front of the lens. Stray light can be a problem if you’re doing that, leading to unwanted reflections off the filter. Learnt the hard way with that one!

Brilliant MilkyWay shots Russell, think the first one with the path is my favourite. The light pollution on the horizon actually adds to all of the images. Interesting starglow filter! Great work👍

I used a filter holder. Might try holding it with my 14mm lens soon though as that lens can’t accept filters
