Much has been said about the Japanese carpentry tradition - the sharpness of their tools, true, the scale of their work, true, the mind-bending detail on the edifices of their temples, all true. But soaring above all these factors are the engineering aspects of Japanese carpentry that are truly impressive. Their joinery is so outstanding, so creative as to bring a tear to the eye at times. My wife and I have just had a house built in Japan with sadly none of the techniques on display here.
