    Everyone watching Dick and Julie, but let's not overlook the fact that that is friggin Dick Sherman!!! One of the magical duo that wrote for Walt that wrote It's a Small World, Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow, Grim Grinning Ghosts, A Pirate's Life For Me, Tiki Room, and all the music in Mary Poppins!!!! Absolutely both he and his brother were two of the most talented songwriters contracted anywhere let alone Disney. I definitely forgive them though for "It's A Small World". Though really it wasn't the song that was uncomfortable it was the ride itself. Especially when you're a little kid and it was only one of a very few rides that you were big enough to ride. SMH That was one creepy ride. I preferred Mr. Toad's ride to hell over Small World.

    My grandmother, when she was alive, told me that when I was a baby, she would sing Edelweiss (from the Sound of Music) to put me to sleep. She was a huge fan of Julie Andrews. Because I was raised to sing, she would teach me how to sing Julie's songs from the Sound of Music and Mary Poppins. When she was bedridden because of illness, I would sing "Spoon Full of Sugar" to her to encourage her to feel and get better. I told myself that when I become a mom or grandmom, I will sing the same songs my grandmother used to sing to me.

    It's going to sound ridiculous but I actually teared up when I heard the tuppence theme play in Mary Poppins Returns, but now I know why. Exactly as he said, it was what the whole film was about, what the lesson was, and for the crucial moment of the sequel to reference that was genius. The sequel will never beat the original but it got the themes SO right.

    • @alking7655
      @alking7655 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It was because the director had grown up with the original, and instead of "remaking" the magic, he wanted to continue it. It's the reason they followed on by using parts from the other books and making it that Michael is relearning the lessons of the magic, by the way of it always being shown through the children. To remind the adults, never to lose your childhood imagination and that if you listen and look, children can teach you important lessons and reminders.

    Watching this special brought back my childhood, as did the Tom Hanks movie, “Saving Mr. Banks,” which captured the back story so marvelously well.
    Dame Julie Andrews is a treasure, as is Dick van Dyke - two of the most gifted actors and musical performers ever. Indeed, Dick’s footwork has kept the octogenarian healthy and great shape such that he was still able to dance marvelously in the “Saving Mr. Banks” film.

      What a beautiful memory! I had the pleasure of seeing her in person at the Festival of Books at UCLA back in 2007. She’s beautiful both inside and out. This was not too long after the Princess Diaries movies had come out. The kids there were amazed to see Queen Clarisse in person. I was over the moon to see Mary Poppins!! ☂

    I'm 32 years old and whenever I've been asked what my favorite movie is, I have never hesitated to say it's Mary Poppins... even those awkward first dates where people expect you to say something like The Notebook or whatever.
    It was only in trying to explain the movie to my husband recently as our three boys watched it (and loved it!) for the first time, that I truly understood the deeper messages that I've grown up with and that have been infused into my very personality. I can easily say I love it even more now.

    Dick Sherman is a genius with show tunes, & Ms. Andrews & Mr. Van Dyke are two of the most versatile & overlooked performers of the 20th century. They were & still are amazingly talented. I've always adored them both. If I didn't have such a crush on Mr. James Garner for over 50 years, Mr. Van Dyke would be one of the top contenders.

    The lovely Robin (& I'd thought it was real!), trustingly hopping onto Mary Poppins hand, at the beginning of, A Spoonful of Sugar, so totally charmed me as a little girl... & it really became a deep-seated "one day" GOAL for me to have that happen to me, too! Then, 6 yrs ago, I was goin through the hardest times ever in my life, & lo & behold, I got to rescue & rehab A ROBIN, that ended up being JUST AS loving & trusting with me as that robin was in the movie with Mary Poppins! Such a God-send! (And I've loved & helped birds ever since!) THANK YOU, Julie Andrews/Mary Poppins for getting my dream started!

      The robin was animatronic, obviously, and the whistle it performed during the song was Julie Andrews' whistling. She did so many "behind the scenes" things in that movie, beyond playing the title role. She was constantly shocking the makers of not only Mary Poppins but of the following Sound of Music with her talents.

    • @flashlitestriker4028
      @flashlitestriker4028 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@strangeworldsunlimited712 Yes, I found that out several years ago. It was all amazing, the things she did! What I truly found personally amazing, though, was that how that "belief" that got planted in my eyes (& heart), as a little girl watching Mary Poppins, at the drive In theater with my Mom & Dad, INTERACT WITH that lovely robin, was that I then BELIEVED IT WAS POSSIBLE... & though it took almost 50 YEARS for me to "do it, myself!", I believe that because of the gift/action of "faith", it finally, actually DID COME TO PASS for me, too! Mary Poppins/Julie Andrews "planted the seed" in my heart!

    Absolutely awesome!!!! Julie truly is marvellous in everything she does. To think Mary Poppins was her very first film and how incredible she was and still is in this role is a testament of her innate talent. Absolutely love her in the sound of music too. My favourite film ever!! Walt was an irreplaceable legend. He gave the world so much and that has yet to be equalised. The belief he had in people and the opportunities he provided is something Hollywood could learn a lot from today. Now as for the inimitable father of comedy who can still dance, sing and bring joy to all our lives with a simple wide yet bright smile - this movie would be nothing without Dick Van Dyke. On every single watch of this movie (and anything he does including 'The Dick Van Dyke Show') he emits charm, innate kindness, warmth, compassion, humility, grace and endless fun! I always feel better after watching this magical man. It is simply impossible not smile when you say the name Dick Van Dyke!!! :)
