    I was at this air show and I was 3 years old. These guys were the reason I got my pilot's license.

    I was there. Almost 6years old and the last time I saw the Blues fly the Scooter. Brings back the memories. Makes me proud to be a 19 year(and counting) Cleveland National Airshow volunteer 👍

    First time I saw the Blue Angels they were already in the F-18. The A-4 is by far my favorite ever since the Van Halen video "Dreams".

      @@jorgedelagarzatoy3165 That WON'T be happening anytime soon.
      The F-35 is a maintenance hog and very expensive to operate.
      The Navy is already considering reducing its F-35 buy and the USAF is going ahead and doing that right now they buy more F-15s for the first time in nearly 20 years! That shows you HOW BAD the situation with the F-35 really is!
      (The planes they're replacing F-35 buys with are 140+ of the most advanced F-15s to date -- new avionics, radar, engines -- and F-18 Super Hornets build to the latest block build so they're not getting bad planes. They're very capable planes that are more reliable and cheaper to operate. The F-35 program is just "too big" to cancel altogether even with the warning signs...)
      The F-18 itself isn't cheap... It would STILL be less expensive to operate the A-4 even now with the reduced numbers available. The F-18 burns more fuel and has less endurance on internal fuel than an A-4.
      The Blue Angels transitioning to the Super Hornet fairly soon. It's not an ideal plane (it's less agile and bigger than the F-18A-D) and they would have preferred to stay with the Classic Hornet but those A-D models are literally falling apart and being held together by baling wire. The Super Hornet is newer, still in production, and easier to get spare parts for.

      Well now the Legacy Hornets have retired after 34 years of service....but now they will be transitioning to the bigger and more powerful F/A-18 Super Hornet.

    • @ILSRWY4
      @ILSRWY4 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tigerrocks503chase8 A Super hornet is still, for intents and purposes, a hornet... only 25 percent difference from the legacy... but to the casual air show goer... aesthetically its still a Hornet..

    These are the ones I remember as a kid, I remember when they switched to F/A-18's I thought they looked like futuristic space planes, so sleek and pointy compared to A4's.

    They flew MUCH more dynamic maneuvers back then and at lower altitudes. They got right down on the deck. Not so today.

    Saw them in Peoria Illinois this same year.... 1986. Was nice seeing them in the skyhawk, but missed the "fighters" they usually flew.

    why did they stop using the skyhawk its so efficent

    • @ILSRWY4
      @ILSRWY4 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because its always been a tradition the Blue Angels use the newest, hottest top of the line "Fighter" of that time. Prior to the A-4, they flew the F-4, but with several crashes with F-4 and the fuel crisis of the 1970's they broke that tradition and went with the "Attack" A-4. But after the Fuel crisis was over they went right back to the latest "Fighter". At that time it was the F-14 Tomcat, but it was too expensive and too complicated to operate for air shows. So when the F/A-18 came on line they went with the newest (more efficient) Fighter. "F" in F/A-18 is for "Fighter"

    I grew up in the airahow scene throughout the 80's when you dad got it worked out to Become the 1st BudLight BD5-J Microjet pilot so I remember the Swap to F18's .Im partial to the A4's .
    The f18 just doesnt look like/ fit the profile a Formation Team aircraft..Its More modernized Narrow profile takes some of the Spectical away.
    Where as the A4 is not.
    The A4's have a bulkier profile made the Flying percision for obvious from 5he ground.....
    In my opinion

    The A-4 Skyhawks were a wussy disgrace following the mighty F-4 Phantom. Thankfully, the Navy got its act together by getting the F/A-18 Hornet for its Blue Angels.

      The Skyhawk was better suited to this particular mission than the Phantom, no question about it.

      Agree. It wonder what a T-45 show would look like.
      I saw the Hornet put on a show over Pax River, when it was still undergoing testing, in '78 or '79, a white one. I think Dad and I even talked briefly to its pilot, but I was just a little kid who knew and loved airplanes. That, single aircraft show, was impressive, especially the high angle of attack demo, but it was obvious, even then, that it was the wrong plane for a Blue Angles performance.
      As I saw the QF-4 crash in Point Mugu, I will disagree with the OP that the airshow role of that plane was a good fit. Low and slow is deadly in an F-4.
