I’m actually stoked about February! The rumors were pretty accurate about the Colors Trilogy. Dazed and Confused was shot on Arriflex 35mm, and not 16mm as I originally thought so it should be a nice upgrade. I’m happy the DVD’s aren’t being released as they should die, die, die. Romeo and Juliet by Zeffirelli is a great adaptation. Hollywood Shuffle is lots of fun! And Margarite Duras is a great writer so it would be good to check these out. What’s everyone so cranky about? Criterion keeps pumping out the movies, unlike the decades of slow, individual releases. Doesn’t anybody remember that? If you’re disappointed with a wealth of riches then you’ve probably been spoiled. As Cher says, “Lighten Up!”

I was so pumped when I heard Romeo and Juliet was announced. It's one of my favorite films and it's such a perfect film to be a part of The Criterion Collection

I'm still waiting for them to release Dogville by Lars von Trier. Such an awesome movie that needs to have a Blu-Ray release.

Romeo and Juliet is an extremely wonderful film. It’s widely considered to be the best film adaptation as well as one of the best Shakespeare adaptations ever filmed. It was nominated for Best Picture. The score is indeed terrific. It’s a great film has been previously unavailable in the USA on Blu-ray. I damn near did a back flip!
Also, did you watch the trailer for Hollywood Shuffle? That movies looks amazing! It’s also frightening how relevant that film is today. I can’t n wait!
One thing I’ve learned with Criterion is to really dive in and learn about the films before sticking my nose up at it. Sure it may not be the greatest month since sliced bread, but there’s a lot to celebrate for February. Even as an older, very seasoned cinephile, I find myself still consistently discovering and expanding my mind to great new things. I thought I’d never get into. I have Criterion to thank for a great deal of that.
If anything the 4K releases are the yawn. I’m not a 4K fan so it means zilch to me. And yes The Three Colors trilogy are essential viewing and Kieslowski is great. Glad Criterion has more of him in their collection.

I still need to watch Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet, but I've heard that it's an experience unto itself - an adaptation people rate very high on their lists. I'm very glad it's coming to the Collection, and I hope it will be one of the picks they choose to add to the UK editions so that I can actually buy it xD

I'm actually quite hyped for this month. I didn't buy Three Colors or Dazed and Confused previously and it's nice to know I can buy them in 4K during the flash sale.

This’s how I’m feeling. I’m glad I don’t own either of those yet so I’ll definitely be picking up their 4Ks (depending on if the transfer is good) cough* cough* Green Wong Kar Wai

I’ve actually seen Romeo and Juliet back in high school because it was part of the curriculum. And I do think it was a memorable experience but it’s been well over a decade since I’ve seen it so couldn’t tell you for sure. But funny enough, when I saw Black Christmas recently, I immediately recognized Hussey from when I saw Romeo and Juliet. So either the film has some staying power or she’s just fine as hell.

The great thing about Zeffirelli's 1968 version of Romeo & Juliet is that the 2 stars were REAL teenagers when they filmed it, just as Shakespeare intended. Hussey was 15 & Whiting was 17. Other versions before & after had "adults" playing teenagers. Also Hussey was in the Stephen King miniseries "IT " (1990)

The Duras set interests me the most. I’m glad to be able to finally see Three Colors and Dazed and Confused now that I don’t have to worry about upgrading. But I’m probably most excited about watching Hollywood Shuffle. What a great film!

As a whole? This lineup is quite disappointing. Cuz in all reality, it's just two new titles and one dual-set. Plus some minor visual upgrades.
With that said. I am beyond happy about the Romeo & Juliet (1968) announcement. That film is the definitive Romeo and Juliet film and is in all respects my #1 favorite Shakespeare adaptation ever... It's time-period accurate to the original story, it has two great lead actors, and just the film is beautiful to look at. I have zero complaints with the film, zero... or well outside of the fact that the lead actress is 16 and has a small nude scene... but uh... besides that... I do genuinely love everything about this film. It will be immediately added to my shopping cart when the next flash sale occurs.

Also the male lead looks exactly like Zack Efron. That's also a funny thing to poke fun of in the film.

Romeo and Juliet is a legitimately great adaptation with some beautiful sets, gorgeous Technicolor cinematography, and all the scenery chewing poetry-spewing a Shakespeare adaptation deserves.

Very disappointed month! I would be interested in picking up only the Duras films as I have already Three Colors and Dazed and Confused in Blu Ray and upgrading them to 4K is expensive. Romeo and Juliet is not my type of film and I don’t have any interest in Hollywood Shuffle! So there is not too much too collect from Criterion in February 2023.

Yeah Feb is sort of the poor month. Still in a buying hangover and it's a short month so people buy less...It's a good month for them to get some of the "ok" releases out of the way. Nature of the beast. Great video Bill!

@@BillGriff1 I know one is absolutely "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters." As quirky as the concept is, it's one of the most enduring documentaries out there with real dynamic characters in all weird ways. Plus, Criterion could have a field day with the sheer number of special features that are potentially available. Also, I would like to see someone do something the animated works of Will Vinton. Oh third...we need a "Fishing with John" upgrade. I know the way it was shot they can't improve much of the picture quality, but they can do something.

The two films from Duras I think the most interesting from the new releases. Romeo and Juliet has some nice production design and costume but that’s about it. There is no one in cinema history who transmitted the spirit of Shakespeare on the screen then Laurence Olivier and maybe the Coen brothers as well.
